The backstory posted on the official web site even explains the entire matter of the dimensional shift. I doubt any player has ever been surprised. Those who care enough to read mission briefings had likely picked up the thousands of clues related to the Lost and the Rikti, or just read the site. And those who don't read the story typically don't care at all (and thus perpetuate the incorrect statements of the Rikti being extraterrestrials).
