See the traditional Buddhish in Asia, you will find out " Is Buddhism a religion or not" ? Buddha believe that God exist. ( See "The Buddha" in PBS " God told Buddha teaching his knowlegdes) But Buddha didn't teach people about God because he didn't know much about him. He taught people about his life experiences. East buddhist clergies had been made Buddha become Buddhist's god. Western Buddhist clergies reject God. Mainly,Buddhism have system clergy ==> Buddhism is religion.
The Latin word for "religion" - as, anyway, I remember it from the Catholic sister who tried to teach me that language - could also be translated as "to link together." "Linked" isn't quite as bad as "bound". We ARE all linked together - aren't we? This, then, would be what religion means - being aware of that fact... Not that bad, is it?
Buddhism is a religion and philosophy encompassing a variety of traditions, beliefs and practices, largely based on teachings attributed to the Buddha ("the awakened one"). The Buddha lived and taught in the eastern part of Indian subcontinent some time between the 6th and 4th centuries BCE. He is recognized by Buddhists as an awakened or enlightened teacher who shared his insights to help sentient beings end ignorance of dependent origination, thus escaping what is seen as a cycle of suffering

@Dice3000 religions have nothing to do with gods. it has to do with after life and about how to live your life. satanism is a religion. and satan is no god.
However.. I must say I love Buddhism and Buddha's Teachings are so wise and bring about happiness. I feel like a young buddha. I have read about his life stories and of course mine is not the same, but I feel similar in terms of finding happiness with my life and not liking my life and always searching and thinking etc. I think we may all feel like young buddhas throughout our lives which is why the teachings can really touch us in such powerful ways.

@ryn7yen2 "you will go to hell" is blaming someone for some perceived failure on their part. The good monk had some wise words on that in the start of his talk.
Let' s hope that spreading informatons like this one will help dismiss a great number of misconceptions about buddhism- though it' s always easier to rely on one (or many more ) gods to take the responsibility for your own life off your shoulders! Just as societies are thriven in willingly sacrificiing freedom and rights over - so called- safety...So , thanks for the opportunity to attend !
@gavinmoose "To say buddhism is "the true religion" is to go against the basic buddhist principle of impermanence" the buddha himself is purported to have said it is the true religion. ""Bhikkhus, only here is there a recluse, only here a second recluse, only here a third recluse, only here a fourth recluse. The doctrines of others are devoid of recluses: that is how you should rightly roar your lion's roar"
@nakedzen01 "Bowing to the statue is a sign of respect and gratitude for the teachings, nothing more" actually, bowing to a consecrated statue of the buddha is considered equal in merit to bowing to the actual buddha shakyamuni in all respects, in term of merit gained.
@BillKiernan if u say that buddha is worshiped then u are missing a point of buddhism which is that Siddhartha never wanted to be viewed as an idol/God/bowing to being
@Jacobreed1081 "if u say that buddha is worshiped then u are missing a point of buddhism which is that Siddhartha never wanted to be viewed as an idol/God/bowing to being" you're going to have to tell that to the millions of buddhists who make offerings of incense/food/etc to the buddha via consecrated images, believing that doing so brings about merit. the buddha's last instruction was to construct a stupa (burial monument) keep his body in it, and WORSHIP it, make offerings to it.
@BillKiernan, I seriously don't think you understand what Buddhism really is. In fact, what it is it's just moral teachings from the Buddha, which he rediscovered after the moral concept had been contaminated completely.
@krittmasta "In fact, what it is it's just moral teachings from the Buddha" to disprove this i'd have to point you to...either the pali or mahayana or vajrayana canons. morality is one small piece of what the buddha taught. do you usually accuse people of lack of understanding while being ignorant of the subject matter yourself?
@nakedzen01 "A monk's vows are not rules, but training precepts" if a monk does not follow those vows (specifically, the "unbreakable" vows such as no sex etc.), he's kicked out of the order, so they're rules. maybe you're in the zen tradition where monks are not really monks in the full sense of the vinaya, but in other traditions, they sure as hell are rules, legalistic rules in fact. " not as a form of rigid control" if you can get kicked out for breaking them, they are a form of control.
"If it binds you up...if you think you have an obligation to the church.." this is coming from a guy who must maintain over 200 vows and ritualistically worships statues daily. of course buddhism is a religion.
I am not sure whether you have watched the videos because what you commented about monks keeping rules make Buddhism religious is addressed in the video at 0:10:30 onwards. Give it a watch to better understand how Buddhists think, if you are interested.
You are right that as a monk, there are many rules to observe. These rules, which are supposed to control you, actually make you feel free. It is freedom from desires rather than the freedom of desires.
@E2bling94 you're ignorant, man. The Buddha is not a God. He is a human like us, but much more wiser and is like a teacher for people in life. Please do more research before badmouthing another religion. Also, the cover of a book does not matter. So if Jesus were fat, you wouldn't follow him? hah, you just got owned my friend.
@RoXas1093 "Right Speech" ain't a part of the Noble Eightfold Path for nothing. And I don’t think it advises you to insult whomever you are talking to - that's not only rude but also, well, unskillful!
There seems to be a difference between how Buddhism is practiced and what the Buddha taught. When Buddhism expaned into new areas many integrated it with their previous belief system. This may be one reason their are many variations. It seems that Ajahn Brahm has been able to practice and teach Buddhism without former belief systems
Buddhism in Burma. It is philosophy the doctrine that knowledge is acquired by reason without resort to experience. The Buddha is not Savior likely The God. The Buddha is a extraordinary humanbeing pointed out he does not claim to be an incarnation of Vishnu Hindus believe nor a saviour Buddha exhorts to depend on themselves for their salvation for both purity and defilement depend on oneself. You yourselves should make the exertion the Buddhas are only teachers.
@mmbodhi Thank you yes God is but a Teacher - a Teacher can only instruct & encourage but will not take the test for a student. God will not interfere in our affairs, which explains what is happening around us. I tell people not to kneel to God, not to beg for favors for those will not be granted, but just ask for guidance & moral strength, then go out & fight life's battles on our own.
Buddhism is not only based on the strong belief but also blind faith. It is rationalism.
Buddhist belives that, one has one's own destiny which has done the good or bad actions (bodily, verbally and mantal action).
Moreover, the Buddha is not a savior, a creator and destroyer, but He is a great teacher, the Enlightened-one and the true seeker of the nature of the Law (Dependent Origination of the Law). He points out that " Buddhist should be a free-thinker".
@mmbodhi, really, if you don't believe in Buddhism, I don't care, go trolling somewhere else dude. I'm sorry, I don't invade your space of belief, please don't come here with mind of crayons and color it everywhere.
@Lov3brittany. Google buddhism and u'll get all the info on how to be a buddhist. However, it's not easy being a buddhist cuz of the American culture. Keep ur body, mind and speech from generating negative karma is the path to enlightenment. Simply as that.
I would like clarify one thing regarding buddhism for non-buddhist.a buddhist monk and a buddhist has different paths. a monk seeks enlightenment w/out being reborn, and vows to lead a simply life. A buddhist who leads a social life rarely get enlighten. where they will end up is based on the ten perfections and how well they follow them.
@L0v3brittany I am sure there are lots of Books & web sites that can help you. One thing to notice - go to any christian video site & see some of the hate posts all the while quoting scripture, then compare it to Buddhist video sites like these. I am Hindu, you can check us out also - you'll see the same thing.
I find it interesting that no two monks or groups of monks say the same thing regarding the religiosity of Buddhism. This monk here, in my understanding of Buddhism, is, in fact, wrong. If Buddhism was not a religion... Why would the Buddha have a following, declare other philosophies & theologies as inept, describe a path to salvation, & why would other venerable monks describe Buddhism as a religion? Is the monk aware that in Southeast Asia monks participate in political violence to this day?
@seedofbug1088, I don't know if Buddhism is a religion on not, but I know that it has the truth to happiness. The truth of how mind and universe governs. It has the truth with laws of nature. That's all I'm going to say.
Greco-Buddhism, sometimes spelt Graeco-Buddhism, refers to the cultural syncretism between Hellenistic culture and Buddhism, which developed between the 4th century BCE and the 5th century CE
If you just pay attention to the talk instead of being bothered by his pulling the robe, you already pass the test of right view, right thought, right concentration, right attitude.
KIND ADVICE TO ANYONE WHO IS THINKING OF TAKING UP BUDDISM!
Every human is born with dignity! And you have the right to keep that. Don't end up walking the streets of Asia barefoot, dressed in rags, begging for food, and kissing the feet of monks!!
yeah, I could feel that it is a problem for us seeing thing that is annoying. However, for himself, I don't think that pulling the robe is an irritating business for him. The question is will it be better to keep the robe stay in place rather than letting it slide down? would it be useful for all audiences, himself and people watching in YouTube? :)

Can anyone recommend any books about Buddhism? or anything to do with it. I'm very interested in it, and want to learn more.
L0v3brittany 2 years ago

Is the monk aware that in Southeast Asia monks participate in political violence to this day?
seedofbug1088 2 years ago
@seedofbug1088, I don't know if Buddhism is a religion on not, but I know that it has the truth to happiness. The truth of how mind and universe governs. It has the truth with laws of nature. That's all I'm going to say.

Greco-Buddhism, sometimes spelt Graeco-Buddhism, refers to the cultural syncretism between Hellenistic culture and Buddhism, which developed between the 4th century BCE and the 5th century CE

If you just pay attention to the talk instead of being bothered by his pulling the robe, you already pass the test of right view, right thought, right concentration, right attitude.
honhanguyen 2 years ago 7
well arent you judging their botheredness. A robe like that is like wearing really baggy pants like a gansta.

I don't understand the joke at 7:03. Does he mean that any "crazy" people can come in, or whatever?

He could use a pin to hold the robe up on his shoulder.
BipolarBowler 2 years ago 3
yeah, I could feel that it is a problem for us seeing thing that is annoying. However, for himself, I don't think that pulling the robe is an irritating business for him. The question is will it be better to keep the robe stay in place rather than letting it slide down? would it be useful for all audiences, himself and people watching in YouTube? :)

NOT right "concentration". Right stillness. So helpful

I thought the word religion came from "binding" as in bringing together, uniting people,
?
or did it really come from "binding" as in not having freedom
