wow. when i saw the title of this vid, i honestly scoffed. ten minutes later, after watching, i am now opposed to hate crime legislation. this is an enlightening point of view that i wish more LGBT people would take! thanks!
Hey Charles. I am on a collab channel, called MensRoomFTM where one of our video-topics were Hate Crime and Hate Crime Legislation.. I instantly remembered thi video, and how it inabled me to articulate my thoughts about this topic. I am referring to this video in my video.
So yes thank you for this, and heres for enjoying a wonderful spring weekend!
The Ontario Human Rights Code (the Code) provides for equal rights and opportunities, and freedom from discrimination. The Code recognizes the dignity and worth of every person in Ontario and applies to the areas of employment, housing, facilities and services, contracts, and membership in unions, trade or professional associations.
People who are discriminated against or harassed because of gender identity are legally protected under the ground of sex.
i agree that our prison system is flawed. you're probably aware of the idea of the prison-industrial-complex... i've seen the same patterns in a psychiatric hospital... there is money to be made in these institutions, and any evolution of the process that effects those profits is stifled at least. and ive seen transphobic violence and discrimination there too, in a mental health center of all places.
Thank you for your well developed argument against hate crime legislation.
Although I was previously uneasy with hate crime classification, (how is one act of violence worse than another act of violence?), I had not put all of the many different pieces together.
While I too disagree with the total abolition of jails, you have certainly made me realize that supporting hate crime law goes against one of my basic beliefs of law- that minimum sentencing is BAD. It totally negates the knowledge, experience, training, wisdom, and intuition of the presiding judges, and turns them into sentence-stamp-punching robots.
What we need more is instruction at the childhood/ school level to accept (or at least not be violent towards) ALL minorities, including LGBTQ.
Sadly, most areas of this country are still hostile to LGBTQ rights, and are hostile towards their children getting "liberal" (i.e. TOLERANT) education/ instruction, so... I dunno, hopefully it can be done through media, arts and entertainment, SOMEthing.
fwiw, I'm aware that our legal system likes to arrest/ lock up minorities or, also, homeless or ANYone who's an "outsider."
Privitization of prison-building/-running certainly leads to lobbyists pushing for longer/more jail sentences...
Great video! I was shocked when I learned that most people ending up in jail for hate crimes were actually minorities LOL! So I can see where there is no need to give more power to the system, I also agree with Dupricatekeys though, as some folks just cannot be rehabilitated and it's better to keep them off the streets.
I appreciate your thoughtfulness, I haven't thought much about hate crime legislation. Being against the prison industrial complex, I'm inclined to agree with you.
Having a Hate Crimes Law that reproduces violence experienced by trans people and other minority populations doesnt make any sense to me. Why ask the State, who is one of the biggest perpetrators of violence against trans people, for protection? What does State protecting mean? Is it protecting anyone who isnt white? I think it gives the State more power and control to survey minority populations. The prison system is more than just racist it is embedded in our history of slavery.
I think that people who cannot control impulses and desires to molest children and "sociopaths" are people who are sick and perhaps lack empathy and respect for other human beings, but hopefully not entirely all of the time. Yes our society will have to come up with alternative institutions for such people, seeing that they will always exist, but the prison abolitionist stance is about a movement, which envisions a society that is obviously structured in a different manner.
The vision and path, lie in abolitionist ideas and ideals of personal accountability, participation in cross-identity movements, and straight-up action and solidarity.
He didn't and you totally missed the point of the video. Arguing about who has had a harder time in life will never bring progress and is inappropriate in all occasions.
I am absolutely on board with prison abolition. I too disagree with where our time and energy have been spent i.e. Same sex marriage/ Hate Crimes. These both reify whiteness and maintain white heterosupremacy. The history of marriage and prisons are directly connected to slavery. Being an antiracist ally and class conscious is imperative when discussing these issues. I feel completely alienated here in Portland OR when trying to have conversations with other trans people/ allies about this.
"I am absolutely on board with prison abolition."
I don't contest the fact that our prisons are in dire need of reform, but if we abolish them where will we keep child rapists, homicidal maniacs and arsonists at bay?
Thanks! I think more white transguys need to own their social privilege. The same goes for class privilege. When we separate different movements, groups get left behind. Trans-people have experienced this with lgb work. I can't be liberated at the expense of others.

Don't just talk
Put your whole life on the line like MLK and the rest did.
Until then we don't hear you.

Quit calling Black people bigots then maybe someone will listen to you. Until then we don't care, because Black homos are more oppressed than you.

I totally agree with your statements. Unfortunately, we can never fully eliminate hatred but we can try to educate. Well done video!

Charles, you have a very smart and important perspective. These things need to be heard. You are brave.
Also. your voice is sounding great.

This video is fantastic. And I totally agree with "change the system" mindset, instead of "ignore the problem" mindset the country has.
