I own a 92 Corrado SLC with cams/chip/intake, and i love every minute of driving my car. i respect ANY gearhead who puts in the time to work on their cars, and sure maybe the economy honda VTECs run fine, but truth of the matter is, these arent throw away cars, there is no GETTING ANOTHER ONE, there is no 'my homeboy has a shop and i can do backyard turbos yo" so we take care of our Corrados. ive had at least a handful of ppl tell me that the corrado was the best car they had/have.
i have the exact same corrado except leather seating its in mint condition 1992 and only 82k miles on it. im 15 and my dad just got a 2009 jetta tdi so im getting the corrado =)
This car is so expensive to drive, also g60. Because of that they are rare. I enjoy when somebody asks what I'm driving. Just see ?!? look. Priceless!
to make matters worst that 1.8 is actually is a 1.6l b16 engine which is 1597cc... oh which is also 100hp per liter something you can only find in the likes of exotics.. (94+gsr 1.8l 170hp) (96+type r 1.8l 195hp) (93gsr 1.7l 160hp) less is more thats why many hondas from old are still on the road today and these cars are less than 2500lbs so that flat torque curve is irrevalent.... and the aftermarket support is rediculous.. and did i forget these are n/a4cyl engines= cheap!
@dflet03 and they are also boring to look at, no one is impressed when they look at an integra, except for maybe you, my cars a head turner, yours is just every other jap car on the road
Most satisfying drivers car VW ever made. Fast, and great handling cars. These are excellent collectible machines if you can find a stock one that hasn't been molested/modded to death...
true indeed! its a matter of prefrence where you want your power, lower of higher rpm... this is why honda pocket rockets will be around for a long time... ok lets take a cheap fairly safe lightweight chassis give a racing powerband, excellent build quality, great resale value, fun to drive 30+ mpg and cheap to fix.. this briiliance of thinking and enginering is why honda is king of pocket rocket and will always have a loyal following
To each his own, but you obviously haven't ever driven a Corrado VR6. Most don't drive around in a "racing powerband", its onramp shoots & light to light runs. A VR6 can run around all day in 4th gear then pull away HARD leaving 4cyls and even some V8's sucking air. Even still a "heavy" SLC will still outrun/handle a VTEC on any venue. You can have your great resale, a VR6 owner wants to KEEP his car. Besides as good as Honda's are, they're a dime/dozen. The Corrado was/ is something special.
im sure this was a fun torqey car but to say it could outrun honda vtec cars dosent sound to credable most of hondas vtec pocket rocket are under 2.0l of displacement n/a 4cyl engines that post 6 sec range sprints to 60 and is progressively building power... and this is with less than 130lbft of torque... if these cars are quick enough to keep up with u at a light... from a rolling start what do you think would happen????
Specs in '92-'95. VW 2.8L 172 hp V6 w/178 ft/lbs, Honda 1.8L 4cyl VTEC w/160 hp /116 ft/lbs. From a rolling start, seriously? VR6 is already producing more torque/hp @ 2300rpm than the VTEC ever will, and it has to be nearly redlined to get to its powerband, so your driving for a rolling start at redline? VR6 torque curve is flat, making 123-172 ft/lbs the ENTIRE range up to redline. Facts are facts, look up the figures in '92, Corrado was SCCA autocross champ over VTEC then too, its a fact...
look at mw 94 intera gsr sedan 6.4seconds to 60 and 14.9 sec in the 1/4mile stock with 4 doors 1797cc and 130lbft of torque... you not beating that from a rolling start.
i have known about these cars since they were put on sale... ...BUT I HAD NO IDEA THESE THINGS WERE GERMAN ROCKETS! 6.4 0-60! and i bet the 15dEgree v-6 is were they got most of there ideas for the W-8-10 etc., motors. too bad it cost a small fortune to fix and maintane them:(
An friend of my Mom's gave me a ride in his brand new '93 Corrado. I was only 11 at the time, but I remember how impressed I was with the car. It was very fast and the motor sounded sporty. Nice car if you can find one now.
Wow, interesting to see that Motorweek hasn't changed much over the years. Have to note that John Davis used to be a lot more restrained. He hams it up a bit more now. Not that it's a bad thing. Anyway, I lusted after the Corrado for many years so it's nice to see this report on a classic car (in my opinion). Wish I had got one! It's performance still compares favorably with many cars today. And the 108-foot stopping distance is fantastic! Too bad VW isn't bringing the new Sirocco to the USA.
I wonder if I'm driving it! I purchased my 93 SLC from someone near SF. I'm still driving (and loving)it, even though it costs about $1k/year on average to keep running. I still get occasional jealous looks and "thumbs up" gestures from people in the know.
youre proably not driving it as i am in PA. but i must say i am totally jealous. i would trade my 325 for another one any day. cant bash the bimmer, but the corrado has my heart.
No, hes dead on, I had a '92 SLC and in the early '90's the VW had more than enough torque to run even with a 91-95 Mustang GT's/V8's. Actually its pretty funny messing with Mustang drivers with a Corrado, stay right with 'em, then pull away on anything curvy...and with mods, the VR6 can be scary fast. Remember this little jewel is the great grandfather of great VW engines like the W8 and has a strong heritage to Bugatti's W16.
Well it had a service a couple of months bk. Does seem to be lacking power. I'd love to see a few pics... Might lead by your example re. remapping & NGK's... let me know where u got urs done sometime too - Not many on the roads these days as you know - clocked a slick G60 yesterday however. Grinning b*stard!! :-D
Got to disagree there... 1st & 2nd gears 0-60 lag. I've got one. Just wakes up after 3rd and before you know it your doing 80 - 90... oops time to change gear. Just needs more revs than I think down the gears from stand still - so I'm gonna fit a Rotrex and watch the fuel gauge literally move in opposite direction to the oil temp next to it!
i`ve been thinking bout what car to get after i get my license which is next summer ...and after 1 year of figuring out i chose the vr6. ...hope i friggin find one.

What mods did you have? Because a Corrado is no where near the performance level of a V8 stang.

did you hear those 0-60 numbers? The lightness of the Corrado along with the decent torque numbers make it quite fast...
