@southeastside5 No green screen. Just a clean background take, and one with the actor in the various areas. Clip Order: Actor running in + clean background + actor on top of cabinets + clean background + actor finishing in-place jump and 'smiling' at the camera. Add smoke where "+" are, with each segment slightly overlapped, and Add fake camera shake, and *ding*, you have this clip! :)

@azulblueao I made the smoke with Maya fluids.

To do it properly and make it do as they do it in the movie you would use a 3D-mesh with the character roto:ed to project as a texture and then emit particles with colors from the texture, to get a more varied look colorwise. For the smoke behavior it's most likely used Krakatoa with FumeFX with 3DS Max or a Houdini solution. At the time I didn't know how to use either Fume or Krakatoa.

It's not just the after effect you need for nightcrawler's teleport effect, if you look closely you can everything gets swiped up in the mist or whatever it is. Like look at their clothes. The only reason the mist is that color is because his skin is that color. And it's more like ink or food coloring in water...
