  • You mentioned that Delta will replace the cartridge at no charge. This is half the information. It can be replaced at no charge if you can provide proof of purchase on the tub/shower system you have. Delta's warranty is for original owner only.

  • @WolfBeretta Hello Wolf;

    I have never had a problem getting the cartridge myself, but you bring up an interesting point. Some places may want a receipt for sure.

    Thanks for commenting and enjoy the weekend! Al

  • How do I turn water off for a shower? Should I turn off at the street?

  • @LittleRedHen123 Hello;

    Usually there is a shut-off in your house or apartment that will turn the water off to the dwelling. If not you will have to go the street, but I would say there is one somewhere inside the building that will turn the water off to the entire place. Most shower and bath faucets do not have seperate shut-offs for them; so I usually have to turn the water off to the building.

    Best of luck and thanks for commenting!!! Al

  • I am a homeowner with a single shower knob ( tub/shower) in a spare bathroom. yesterday i went to run the shower (just for the hell of it) both the spout and shower head do not recieve hot water. when the hot water is selected i lose pressure and i never recieve hot water however both the sinks have hot water with no problem. do i have a blockage? what would be my first step?

  • @bigzacque Hello Big;

    It is possible you have a blockage, but highly unlikely. If you have hot water coming to the sinks then it is more then likely your faucet. It may just be a matter of moving the adjustment sleeve on the faucet itself ( it is the one that controls your water temperature). It is shown in the video near the end where I am moving it to a few notches. This maybe your only problem and I would say there is a good chance of this.

    Thanks for commenting and best of luck!!! Al

  • I just did the springs and washers as you said.

  • @kmacmurchy Hello;

    Sometimes where the washers and springs meet there can be a little wear on that surface. If it is not perfectly smooth you will have to change the whole cartridge. It has a lot to do with water quality and if the water is hard then I would suggest changing the cartridge itself.

    Thanks for commenting and best of luck!!! Al

  • Ok, followed everything as shown, but still leaks. Any ideas?

  • @kmacmurchy Hello;

    I once got a call about a leaky tub and shower faucet and what took place was the cartridge was not pushed in all the way. Basically the nut that holds the cartridge in place was not tightened enough. Not saying this is your problem; just a suggeestin. Did you replace the entire cartridge or replace the springs and washers? Drop me a line and let me know what you have done in your repair.

    Hope to hear from you soon! Al

  • Can I fix a bathtub spout leak with this procedure? I heard the spout leaks because water is reaching it and that the problem is the valve on the cartridge. My shower head does not leak when off, only the spout. Thanks

  • @Rombizio Hello Rom;

    If water is coming out of your spout; it is the cartridge that is causing it, if your faucet is shut off. The reason it does not come out of your shower head is your divertor does not have any pressure on it to keep it in place to force the water to your shower head. Repairing or replacing the cartridge will stop the dripping at your spout.

    Thanks for commenting and good luck with your repair!!! Al

  • @TheOldkid888 Thanks! I will try to replace the cartridge with the technique shown in the video and will let you know the results.

  • kind of a stupid question bu do you have to turn your water off before removing the faucet?

  • @BreezyThaCoolKid Hello Breezy;

    There is no such thing as a stupid question. You must turn your water off whenever working to repair any leaky faucet.

    Thanks for your comments and best of luck with your repair!!! Al

  • You saved my life; THANK YOU!

  • @1983jmg1 Hello;

    Glad I could help. It does make a difference if you see what is involved in the process.

    Thanks for commenting and enjoy 2012!!! Al

  • i cant loosen the ring to get the cartridge out ...what do i do ?

  • @Thejaxful Hello;

    That brass ring is usually the biggest task in repairing this faucet. I would try some CLR or some product like this and apply it several times before trying to remove it again.

    When removing the ring you must be careful that you do not turn it into an egg shape. Take a wrench and apply pressure around the ring. You may have to try the wrench in perhaps 8 to 10 positons applying pressure each time and hopefully the ring will move for you.

    Tks 4 commenting and G.L. Al

  • I also found Shower Valve Socket Wrench Set useful to unscrew that nut.

  • From my experience it's a very good idea to turn water on for 30 sec before inserting the cartridge to flush the pipes.

  • Hey Al,

    My repairs never go that smooth... last delta I did, I need to soak the retaining ring with some CLR to loosen up hard water deposits. Then the cartridge had an internal crack . I found it by back blowing into the cartridge while covering the supply side holes.but ... I didn't know a free replacement was available. Good information. (I wonder if they'd put a rush on that) ...lol

    Have a great week end:)

  • What happens if you find that the allen screw that hold the handle on is either frozen or stripped? What do I do then?

  • @avrosati Hello there;

    I have come across this a few times and I got the homeowners to turn the water off and put the handle in the upward position and spray a little penetrating oil into where the allen wrench goes. Let it sit for a while; as long as possible. A few hours would be great and then try taking the allen screw out; it can be very difficult at times. Once I ended up changing the faucet, but it works very often.

    Good luck and thanks for commenting! Al

  • video is very helpful, but i can't get the nut off to remove the cartridge, even with a pipe wrench. Suggestions?

  • @RajTaj95 Hello;Sorry for my late response as I was doing a reno with my son on the other side of the country.

    Sometimes this can be a major problem depending on your water quality and if the installer had overtightened the chrome nut.The best advice I can give you is to place the wrench on all positions around the chrome nut and this may break the seal for you.I have run into it once where I could not get it off and I ended up changing the faucet.

    Best of luck and thanks for commenting!Al

  • @MrLuvmuff Hello;

    I have to say this isn't the first time I have heard this. A good friend of mine lives out west and I told him to go with moen in his new home. The plumber talked him into Delta and he has a shower valve that leaked within the first year as well; not to say Moen would not, I just haven't seen it yet.

    It is a little project to repair. You should find out what wholesaler sells delta and ask for a free cartridge. Shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for commenting and G.L.!!! Al

  • Hi... I've replaced the springs but there is still a leak... any other suggestions? Thanks.

  • @soila3781 Hello there; replacing the springs is part of the formula. You have to replace the washers as well. You may have done this too. I am not sure. There is a picec of stainless that the washers push against. If it is very badly stained; there is a possibility that the washers will not seat up tightly against the metal and you will have to pick yourself up a new cartridge.

    Thanks for commenting and good luck with the project!!! al

  • Thanks, this tutorial video inspired me to attempt to fix it myself, which I did -- and saved $450 (the plumber's estimate for parts and labor to replace the valve).

  • @eh270 Hey Emil; congrats is in order for sure! Glad it worked out for you. It just takes a bit of time and patience. Now, if you give your local plumbing suppliers (wholesaler) a call and tell them you have the old parts and are looking for a cartridge to replace it; they should give you a new cartridge as well. This delta cartridge is guaranteed for life. Great product for sure. Thanks for your comments and have a large day!!! Al

  • what do you do if the set crew won't come off? Can you drill it out without having to replace the chrome sketching or would it need replacing?

  • @ultimouomo11 Hello there;You must be talking about the set screw in the handle.The screw is stainless steel.It is very hard to drill / not to say it can't be.If you have not stripped the screw with the allen wrench; take some penetrating oil or nut and bolt loosener and give the screw a spray.If I was going to do it;I would shut the water off in the night before bedtime and turn the handle so that the screw is straight up and let it soak overnight. The screw should come out in the morning.

  • @ultimouomo11 If you have to drill the screw, you will probably need an entire new cartridge and handle. Good luck with your repair and let me know how you got along! Al

  • Thanks for sharing this video! You don't have a clue how much money you just saved me on my water bill alone! I couldn't figure out how to get the handle off and after I watched this video I see I would have been in big trouble if I hadn't found you very helpful video! Not like a faucet I ever repaired before! Keep up the great work!

  • @AngiyT Hello there; Glad it worked out for you. There are a few little things that have to be done to get it right, but it is pretty straight forward once you see the video. Thanks for your comments and enjoy your shower!!! Al. Oh and by the way... Good job!!!

  • Can you tell me what model of delta shower/tub faucet that is? I have the exact same one, and mine is leaking, but I'm not sure what the replacement part number is. I have already tried replacing the seats and springs, and that didn't help with the leaking, so I will have to replace the whole cartridge. Any help that you can give would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • @TheNumbrman Hello there; This is a 1400 series faucet. The cartridges that are made for these faucets sometimes are not the same color as you have in your faucet. Don't panic;it will fit .These cartridges are free at some stores. Usually the cups and springs take care of any leaks. Sometimes the stainless steel that these rubber cup washers meet up against may have a little mineral build up and must be cleaned.One thing to make sure is that you put in the correct length of springs Good luck! Al

  • @TheOldkid888 Thanks a lot! I thought that it was a 1400 series, but I wasn't quite sure. I tried the new springs/cups but that didn't work. I will just pick up a new cartridge and be done with it. Thanks very much for your help. Your video is very informative. It will save me a $150 plumber visit!

  • soooooooooo much better than those ridiculous "expervillage" videos thanks!

  • @ANocers Thanks very much for your comment. Just trying to make any repair as easy as possible.Hopefully it helps.Have a great day and thanks for watching...Al
