  • I like John Lennon's work -- but she's right.

And I don't subscribe to the idea that Lennon was "naive" about the peace movement, he simply didn't want to get involved in the way, say, Harry Belafonte got involved in the civil rights movement.

The peace movement requires an understanding and commitment to *organizing* and *educating* people, and making the tough decisions on how best to do that -- and Lennon simply never committed to that.

    He wasn't naive, just detached.

  • Yoko's point is so true!! I love them both. I figure people only didn't like them because they didn't like his change. Because it wasn't his mophead Hard Days Night Beatle self, everyone resented him for it. I like it when he says i've grown up, and he was. nobody was exepting his change. they all started to calll him crazy, but he wasn't, he was just expressing himself in a way that nobody else understood. The problem was that people needed to learn to grow up. they had to get passed it all.

  • killers are not happy people!

  • John Lennon I fucking love you, you were a legend!

    Yoko, you're a fucking bitch.

  • ...Hate her if you want to for arguing with a celebrity but Gloria was a great woman and a fierce advocate of truth and peace. I will always cherish the time I spent with her and will always miss her.

  • @timcgeever A cunt by any other name, is still a cunt.

  • ... These same people vilify Gloria for arguing with him but she was a person who had actually been to war. She saw the actual effects is has on people and countries. I think she has a valid point about how one goes about affecting real change versus how one goes about making themselves feel like they are affecting change. Gloria was always more interested in the truth than in appearances, even her own. ...

  • @timcgeever Well, Gloria was right, the Lennons were very naive about the peace movement, but then John was also right when he called her a snob about it. Gloria absolutely rankled at the thought of the Lennons being some sort of figurehead for the peace movement and the possible erosion of its intellectual credibility.

  • I was lucky enough to get to know Gloria during the last two or three years of her life. To all the people saying that she was a bitch or rude or something like that I'd just like to say, "You're right!" Gloria was the most awesomely wonderful bitch I ever knew. She never glossed up her opinion about anything and she always offered it wether it was asked for or not. I know there are a lot of people who would like to remember John Lennon as some sort of saint. ...

  • wow this lady is such a pretensious bitch!!!!

  • I love how she won't let John speak and share his point of view, even though they share the same beliefs. she should've let the man himself speak instead of reading a bunch of bullshit government garbage giving her the wrong idea of John

  • Gloria Emerson represents the complete establishment rubbish that comes out of politician's mouths. Lennon and Ono were ahead of their time. Can you imagine them against Cameron and Co. today?

  • I miss you, John & your amazing craft & talent-even if we disagree.

  • Part 2 to below: & protests & "wishing" people "happy thoughts & laughter" will stop wars is just plain stupid. Also, kinda eerie, the ouija board prediction, even if it was a joke.

  • Nice thought, for way back then & if you live in a mental hospital! How simple life would be if just going around "being happy & having a smile on your face" was enough to stop a war! How ridiculous! How juvenile! Little too much zen, kum-bai-ya & probably drugs for this type of thought process. Love John. Love his music, his talent & at times, his peacefulness & his PASSION, but this thought that that having love-ins

  • What a fucking cunt and that reporter too.

  • The world needs a 29 year old John Lennon.

  • "What have you grown up to?" "29" witty bastard!

  • See its funny that the only thing this enterprising young reporter would ever be remembered for was being a bitch to America's Ghandi

  • See its funny that the only thing this enterprising young reporter would ever be remembered for was being a bitch to America's Ghandi

  • John Lennon had a really hard life. not exactly what you call a piece of cake. but the reporter could have lsitened and could have shut the fuck up!

  • Oh so because this woman stood up to John Lennon she's automatically labeled a bitch? I love John and all but people need to get off this Ghandi-Martin Luther King bullshit with him! John was really a hypocrite. He preached love and peace yet he couldn't be at peace with his own bandmates, cheated on his wife, destroyed his marriage, hooked up with....her, and then proceeded to shove her down everyone's throat. John was just as confused as everyone else. But John had his points, good ones!

  • @MattHatter

Your kind of an idiot dude

John lennon specifically started the whole piece movement because of everything he seen and witnessed in his life. And because of all his fame, he decided to change for the world no ones perfect, and he understood his flaws, but making the change he did was a really good thing he and yoko both did. PEople still unfourtunatly do not get the picture.

  • @yvettemadrid75 O.K., obviously you didn't read my whole comment. So now I've got to restate things I've already stated. Don't call me an idiot. Not cool. I LOVE JOHN, and he was great. Understand? But I'm also a realist with people when they're fooling themselves. John was a great talker and I believe in the things he was preaching during this time, but he hurt others AND himself while he was out preaching peace and love. Namely JULIAN his own son.

  • @MattHatter

That's nice, that you say you love John, then why are you "Criticizing" his work.

It's something he believed in, and you probably don't understand what TRULEY happend with Julian and John. And like I said he did have flaws, and understood them. So when you say he was hurting others, those clearly weren't his intensions, he did try to makeup for what he did. But that's his personal bussniss not the message he was brilliantly trying to bring to the world. THOSE ARE OPINIONS!

  • @yvettemadrid75 You can love someone and criticize them at the same time, it's not bloody impossible mate.

  • @Ital890

True, but why would you want to do that?

  • that bitch called the JOHN LENNON a fake! WTF!!!!

  • every one should watch the movie ths us vs. john lennon is kinda describes all this, well not the video but like his attempt for world peace

  • This woman was genius. She told the truth, which is hard to accept at times.

  • Gloria Emerson was a cynical bitch.

  • Do people kill when they are happy and smiling - unfortunately yes. It happens all the time.

  • God, the Lennons' politics were so naieve and mixed up. This is the only footage I know where someone calls them out on their smug, self-righteous hypocrisy. Gloria Emerson was a source of real information for the anti-war movement in the US. She is right to criticize the Lennon's for their ignorance. What the Lennons stand for is capitalism with a happy face. They are the commodities of the culture industry. We need exactly one Gloria Emerson for every pretentious celebrity.

  • @wgibbens I TOTALLY agree with you. And you worded it all beautifully.

  • @wgibbens from where they were in life they could only do what was within their realm. Recongise the heart of such people, not how realistic their ideals are. Support people with strong hearts.

  • If you actually try to understand this, you'd realize that while John's intentions are quite pure, he's quite delusional in his approach. He didn't realize that his method of protesting really didn't accomplish nearly as much as it could have. I won't lie, Gloria Emerson (reporter) went a bit too far but she has a point. Do yourselves a favor and research who she was.

Also, while Yoko's comments at the end were nice, they were delusional as well. Killers smile too - they're called psychopaths.

  • @fhgwdads05 I think you're right about John's naivete—it's perhaps especially clear in retrospect. Emerson gets credit for being skeptical & for saying it to his face. I do, however, think that she is maligning the 'good' for not being 'great'. There had never before been such a thing as a John Lennon & there was no road-map. The 'advertisement for peace' shtick was naive, but its alternative was far from clear—least of all to Emerson. & John's dig re middle-class intellectualizing remains apt.

  • I love how the act of advertising piece by using Lennon's own fame is considered a bad thing by this woman. Surely advertising himself and nothing more would be worse? It is a sad, sad turn of events when a form of spreading peace in the world is frowned upon. Lennon's point was that if people are going to read stuff, watch stuff and listen to stuff by him or about him, it might as well include the word 'Peace'. Even if it does little, at least it spreads the word. The reporter didn't understand

  • This woman was a well regarded reporter who had a great deal of knowledge and strong ideas about the war, but for some reason, she felt the need to beat up on poor John. I think it's because, for all of his apparent bravado, he always was pretty vulnerable. He made the mistake of arguing with her. He should have just said "is what we're doing causing any harm?" Of course it wasn't. In fact, all of the talk of peace helped people realize that they didn't have to just accept war as a normal thing.

  • Look at all of these hateful comments. A lot of you guys don't get it, it seems. Just like the reporter. It's the people who take such firm, unyielding, serious positions on things that cause the trouble. They are the ones that end up killing. That was the point Yoko was making at the end.

  • It's like Yoko's points are so simple and poor because she is actually so simple. At least John was fighting the intellectual side of the discussion, whether you agree with what he's saying or not, you gotta give him credit for that..

  • Yoko ono pisses me off so much. Holy mother I hate her.

  • @inivonwini

Why? How does this help? What is the point of this?

    i

    ii

    iii

  • @pfffbt What is the point? Beyond stating my opinion of Yoko Ono, I'm afraid my comment doesn't have a definite purpose, or a goal which it wishes to attain; or any sort of perfect and holy plan. How does my comment help? Well aside from the 20% of my comment's wages being sent to assist in the great social injustices currently afflicting the far off country of Canada (and occasional random acts of kindness); it doesn't. Please let my comment know if you would like it to help more.

  • @inivonwini You didn't state an opinion. You stated your hate for someone you don't know. Of course it says more about you than it does her. Whatever. It's clear that these two loved each other.

  • [Lesley Stahl on U.S. sanctions against Iraq: "We have heard that a half million children have died. I mean, that's more children than died in Hiroshima. And, you know, is the price worth it?"; Secretary of State Madeleine Albright: "I think this is a very hard choice, but the price--we think the price is worth it." — "60 Minutes" (5/12/96)]

  • Rock and roll John Lennon! Rock and roll John and Yoko.

  • Rock and roll John Lennon! Rock and roll John and Yoko.

  • The reporter (G. Emerson) had been to Vietnam & seen w/ her eyes the debasement & misery of the war in this period. She's expressing the notion that Lennon & Ono could do more than charades & joking to help stop the war.

Is she disgusted w/ Lennon & Ono at this point in the interview? Of course she is...she's experienced the horrors of Saigon. THIS is why she tells Lennon he's in Neverland--because he is so distant from the thing.

"Mrs. Lennon, we're boring each other" (4:54)

    Classic!

  • okay so if john lived in neverland then i wanna go there

  • Reading some of the comments , I hardly think Lennon needed a Peace Movement to sell records and make a profit ! LOL ! After the Beatles his money was in the bank! He could have retired and kept a lower profile and been better off . I don't think he was a fake . Gotta give him credit for doing this ,because most managers would advise to stay out of it . He made himself a target with the Government . He was too outspoken and this perioud and earlier religion statements may have lead to 1980

  • The Thing that people dont get, is that she was merely trying to hold him accountable. He was a human being, he wasnt beyond foolishness or wrongdoing. By calling him a "Fake"....she was alluding to the fact that he had merely become a salesman for the idea of Peace. He was making a Profit off of it, and staying in bed as a way to promote it. I suppose many of you felt the same ways about your Moms when they tried to correct you on something idiotic you were doing.

  • kinda hot, wow i think her face is absolutely busted

  • I agree that the interviewer was a bitch, however her attitude didn't spoil the core of the criticism towards John and Yoko. Furthermore, she "succeeded" in her attempt to put Lennon in the corner. I mean, he could'nt really make a proper response to keep up with the argument, and specially with Yoko's intervention, you can see how superficial and simplistic, and even naive its proposal was (talking about the anti war movement).

"But first you must learn how to smile as you kill...".

  • this made me laugh really hard haha :D that reporter is such a stupid bitch

  • he is living in A NEVERLAND good on the woman that interviewed him & ono

  • Nice job Yoko with the last comment.

  • i love how it took yoko to 'dumb it down' in the end for that lady to finally get the point! i wasn't aware that such an "intellectual" would need such basic wording in order to understand the lennon's message of peace! stupid woman...

  • he sure as hell saved my bloody life!

  • Her name is gloria emerson. Her Argument is invalid.

  • She was trumped by Yoko's last statement. : )

  • Even the Lennon's can't get through to that arrogant, Feminist B*tch.

  • Man, seeing John in these days makes me sad because I like his younger days. So funny and carefree. But I guess the thing I guess I'm impressed by in these days is his intelligence and matureness. I liked him when he was immature better, but I guess that's because I'm young. You know, I think it's just because of Yoko. I'm sorry but good Lord it's true.

  • @themillenia AWESOME COMMENT

  • John has saved many lives with his music...

If only we treated the artistic geniuses as well as we treat the scientific geniuses, while they're alive. No one would dare speak to Einstein like this. It's only after the artistic genius dies that people realize what that person meant.

  • nice words john.Shut up yoko ono lennon!!!!!!!!!!!

  • No one gets one on John. EVER!

  • hmmmmmmmmmm WHY IS SHE A BITCH ?? BEACAUESE SHE IS HOLDING HER OWN WITH JOHN LENNON good on her HE WAS NOT A god & that's why he was with ono she laughed at things he said she followed him about like A PUPPY DOG That is the whole reason he was with her JOHN Lennon TOLD HER the reason i am with you is because you look like a man in drag HE WENT AWAY WITH BRIAN EPSTON FOR A WEEKEND HMMMMMMMMMMMM

  • Political issues aside, this interviewer is very unprofessional. Journalists are supposed to maintain a certain decorum, which includes neutrality. Their interviews are not meant to be a platform for them to express their opinions and emotions. If they express themselves like this individual did, that means that they are not doing their jobs well.

Arguing with your interviewees about their life choices is shameful and childish. If I were her boss, I would have fired her over this interview.

  • @Purushadasa Well yes, in terms of her being an interviewer....technically she should not have done that. But lets be honest, they do that all of the time. Both Conservative and Liberal interviewers do this. My guess is that if she did the same thing to Richard Nixon(at any point in his life, not just as President), you wouldnt have a problem with it. Am I wrong about this? Please correct me if so.

  • john lennon was a fuckng legend! only person that ever really stood up for the people!

  • @conzo21 I'm a fan of John's music.....but you cant seriously think he stood up for people more than Mother Teresa, MLK, and Ghandi. Those people got their hands dirty standing up for people. Lennon made a huge Profit writing songs about it. Theres a big Difference. They were Peace Activists. He was a Peace Salesman who promoted the idea of peace.

  • Thats supposed to be a reporter??? WTF? What a bitch!

  • Gloria had Parkinsons so I guess thats why she killed herself but she was 75.

  • What a pretentious bitch that reporter was. Whether you agreed with Lennon or not the shit he put up with from the media was brutal. The media was so much more conservative and stuffy in those days.

  • @metal9292 the media today wouldn't argue with lennon. they would just lie about him and cut the interview so it seemed like he is a horrible person

  • @metal9292 It's still very conservative and mendacious today, the packaging is just a little different. Gloria Emerson brought a touch of real life to the Lenonos little fantasy.

  • This has made me lose even more respect for John Lennon and Yoko. Idealists are just another problem with politics. Especially ones living in the Dakota and laying in bed doing LSD after becoming famous selling sex and drugs to a repressed nation. This is why people ignore pacifists.

  • You didn't ignore them -- you commented, destroying your own weak point.

  • Gloria Emerson...committed suicide in 2004.

  • Was this part of a documentary/film?

  • Yoko was making a point about being serious and killing people. I could see her side of the argument at first 'Seriousness=Arguments=Anger=Fights=War'. The opposite would have the reverse effect - being happy rather than serious. However, as she was explaining this rather logical argument, it became apparent to me straight away that actually people can kill with a smile on their face - because some of them are sick. But she kinda clawed it back with the idea that they are unhappy people inside

  • Her point is that she couldn't see how making a song called 'Give Peace a Chance' and staying in bed or making any statement about Peace would make the slightest bit of difference in the world in terms of change. To a certain extent, she is right, of course the song or John Lennon's beliefs would/could never stop wars. However, surely the word 'Peace' from the mouth of John Lennon would raise awareness of Peace and bring the concept to the masses? The reporter was downright rude.

  • Watch him lose it at 3:48. He's not a million miles from swearing at her.

Yoko Ono's suggestion at 4:30 verges on the infantile. "If you're happy and you know it..."

  • If we are all Jolly we might stop the war.. when you are happy and you are smiling you don't want to kill someone do you? Really Yoko? Wow really? The reporter leaves when she realizes that Yoko is a babbling idiot...

  • If we are all Jolly we might stop the war.. when you are happy and you are smiling you don't want to kill someone do you? Really Yoko? Wow really?

  • @discfunk Strangely, she does have a point. She didn't communicate it very well (she came across as very naive and juvenile), but they were saying that if you get a group of people together with a positive attitude to work together for something, it's a lot more effective than if they just mope and complain about the situation. if someone tells you 'I know we can get together as human beings and change things to the way we want it to be', it's a lot more effective than 'life sucks'.

  • I seriously wish Yoko would have shut up. She just ruins everything.

  • Jonh is funny when he imitates the interviewer:-) She cant just be glad that they said peace and put in peoples conscience.

  • Shit !! I don't understand 'cause I'm french and I have problems of hearing ! Anybody can to translate it for me please ?

  • @TheDoctorNash

I can't speak french at all, but i could type what they say in english if it's any help?

  • @NM0dz

    Yes please :D !!

  • to bad the wiki board was true :(

  • I LOVE JOHN IS SO INTELLIGENT

  • Now that's one time that I agree with John AND Yoko, especially that she says happy people are not taking each others lives. Interestingly enough (although it is sad) that the reporter allegedly has taken her own life in 2004.

I think John was right in using his fame for advertising peace.

  • 2:41 - What I like to call John Lennon's Insta-Wit :)

  • This reporter was an obnoxious jerk. I admit that singing songs won't make much of a differance but at least Lennon was trying to do his part (even if it was very small). I respect that he at least cared and was genuine. This reporter was trying to tear him down and he wouldn't take it. Good for him.

  • The interviewer killed herself in 2004.

  • Lol, the reporter rage quit.

  • What a BITCH.

  • You know something it may seem naive but at least John and Yoko were standing up for a good cause, peace. Which is more than what most people do. If everyone actually got behind them and spoke up for peace too instead of just bashing them for doing it or how they were doing it...maybe then something might actually fucking change. The world's too full of stuck up bastards over-analysing everything. I think that we need a bit of naivety, we need to free our minds and just get behind the cause.

  • John Lennon should have never died

  • Ahahaha...leave it to the New York Times. STILL a complete piece of shit.

  • she got fucking owned lethal. snooty bithch

  • I love John Lennon but at this point in his life he was living in some kind of fantasy world. Campaigning for peace is all fine and well but most people on this planet want peace so it was really nothing more than a big campfire song. If you want peace you have to eliminate wealth and greed and good luck to anybody on that one. I think if John were still alive he'd have a very sarcastic view on what he was doing in the seventies.

  • @Trojaniksr

    your own words, not hers.

  • Great video, very raw and honest.

  • Excuse me, you're talking to John Lenon.

  • Lennon was full of shit!! And so was/is the Times!!

  • Gloria Emerson was her name and sometimes I wonder if she comitted suicide becuase she got parkinsons or if she did becuase of the reaction she got from this interview.

  • Gloria Emerson, NYT. FYI.

  • I hate the interviewer. She was so self centered and arrogant. She seemed like she liked John Lennon when he was a robot because he couldn't say anything. Then suddenly he married Yoko and she hates him because he 'doesn't know what a protest is?' I doubt she is any better. I bet she goes home and cries herself to sleep everynight, because they day she met the world's biggest musician at the time she was tatting him out because he didn't know how to throw a peace rally.

  • i feel bad that just because he was a peace activist people bash him for getting angry every PERSON despite what you do is aloud to get angry and or frustrated at times i meen yes he had a very bad temper but even then people are aloud to get flustered at times

  • I may not like Yoko but she did have a good point at the end

  • "stop, and take the time to smell those roses, stop,

to take the time to talk it over with your wife.!!.!)))

  • she is definitely right to go,

and it is great how they agree to each other how wrong she was and how she didn´t

    understand anything after she left--

"killers are unhappy people - when me make people happy we may stop the war",- yoko is a laugh, that´s true ))

i mean lennons songs were sure a positive influence for the world to some extent, but they took themselves a big bit too serious in a political way!

    who was that woman?

  • this interview made me love yoko! thats the reason that bitch walked out!!! because she knew that yokos point was true and she didn't have an answer so she walked out! GO YOKO!! R.I.P John

  • Always makes me laugh when John Lennon gets angry about Peace. I thought he was going to clober her for a minute. 1:43 "Its an advertising campaign for peace!! *thump* can you understand that?! A very big advertising.."

Love him and he wouldn't have been the same without Yoko as a comedy foil.. even though Paul was the better partner when it came to the music.

  • Yoko sounds dumb. and he is believed that her dumb statements were some profound eastern mysticism

  • you tell her yoko! YEAH!

    4:28

  • 'Allo John!

  • his music was great. his speech was damagogic. he bored people to death when he opened his mouth. too much ego. yoko was hot tho'

  • John Lennon, an english musician and peace activist which will be remembered FOREVER from his grat music and contribution to world peace... R.I.P, we love you John

  • Thank God John Lennon wrote those songs. He is one of the greatest contributors to Peace ,the world has ever known. And one of the greatest thinkers the world has ever known. Fools can kill the messenger but there never going to kill the message. You cant kill the Word. The Word is Love and the Word is eternal. Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God. Mathew 5:9

  • this lady was so angry. she had an agenda when she went in there. john and yoko shouldn't have given her the time.

  • Lennon is the greatest...

  • its sad he did die

  • No shit ! She really said "Mrs. Lennon we're boring each other so I'll go away".

  • In all fairness the reported appears to come out on top in this interview. Condascending and snobby yes but she does make a point if you listen and john and yoko's responses are just temperamental and kinda fluffy. yoko's especially.

ps who is the interviewer? ...kinda hot...

  • @mebe Psht, she's too caught up with her left brain, failing to comprehend anything beyond the scientific method. It's like two humans arguing with a robot, they understand the gray while the woman is inhibited with black and white. Sad to see this world continue walking without shades...

  • @mebe

Wrong. And she's Gloria Emerson. This isn't an interview, just a conversation. A heated one at that.

  • @mebe - the reporter was Gloria Emerson

  • @mebe of course she comes out *on top*, it's HER production, which includes editing out everything that would be perceived as out-witted on her part.. & only the footage of them riled up knowing what buttons to push. Editing is powerful in political agenda.

  • @mebe Lol, this interview was from the New York Times. She commited suicide

some time later after john's death.

  • @metalshadowmario4 Well she committed suicide in 2004. That's a long long time after John's death!

  • John Lennon will always be the best!

  • I agree John had his faults just like anyone, And Im sure if he had never met Yoko he wouldnt have turned into this icon for peace. But thats what happened and I respect the guy for what he stood for. But I dont remember him for this he was a musical genius, And an inspiration along with the rest of the beatles to want to pick a guitar up for the first time!

    RIP John - Forever missed

  • Hey i bet you didnt know John was a conic masterbator! lol its true lol i read in a book by Phillip Norman lol

  • I was and still am a Beatles fan, but, if you look up enough of John's history you will unfortunately discover that he was a terrible father/husband to his wife and child (Sylvia and Julian). He was definitely no saint. Turns out he was kind of a jerk. (That explains Yoko). Paul was much kinder and took Julian under his wing when John was too busy.

  • i wonder what the public would think of yoko if she were classically attractive

  • He lives in ,,NEVERLAND"! xD

  • I love you John!

  • they both had excellent points. i'm not against violent protest myself, but i still can't decide who was right. maybe they were both right.

  • meh. george is better.

  • Yoko is stupid

  • I bet the people of vietnam were really glad that john and yoko stayed in bed for a couple of days.

  • @metalebd No but that wasn't the point. They helped contribute to the cause of peace and as a result also played a part in ending the Vietnam war. Now, I'm not saying they directly ended the Vietnam war, I'm saying that it was because of their activism for peace that led to an even greater backlash against the U.S. government calling for them to end the war which in turn did help end it.

  • i hate how yoko interjects like she has something of worth to say... at least she sounds cute though

  • i have to say, John isn't very well spoken or modest

  • Is it me, or did someone warn him he was going to be assassinated?

  • go john give it to that arogant woman!! R.I.P.

  • Haha, an interviewer who puts these egotistical twats in their place rather than suck up their ass. Clasic.

  • i live across the street from Yoko...It's like seeing John's spirit. As a writer, it's very inspiring to know that a man like this walks the same streets I do everyday. Afterall, apart from musician, he was just an everyday guy - but special, if that makes any sense.
