With the popularity of "Clean" Or Euro" diesel cars increasing here in the US it's surprising that we don't see more of them here. I see tones of VW and Audi TDIs (I own a VW TDI). The Smart CDI diesel isn't available here and Mercedes US won't even talk to me about it. I had to get this motor and any needed parts from Canada.
Amazing to think how much this lovely little 799cc engine cost Mercedes to build and develop.
You would have thought it would have ended up in a few other small citycars to share the cost like BMW have done by sourcing their diesel unit from toyota.
But no to get hold of one you have to buy a Smarty just like i did.

It's a smaller alternator from a Kabota fork lift. yes custom mount.

The alternator is mount to the other side... why? Do you must built a custom bracket to fit it there?
