Familiars can aid you in both combat and non-combat situations. Most familiars can be used in combat, but some are for non-combat purposes only (the beaver, for example).

Err I think someone recommended basilisks, maybe, but don't take my word on it. I just went for gold charms.

the best way is if you have 43 slayer and kill basilisk. for crimson i perfer greater deamons. for golds moss giants or fire giants. blues will come as you go

lol funny thing with the compost mound familiar i went into the wildy with him this strange thing happened i saw his combat level it was a 41 lol

To be honest though, I had no idea what most of the familiars were going to do (I had forgotten to read the knowledge base prior to making the vid, and in some cases I only had enough charms to make 1 pouch and 10 specials per familiar) and that's why in some cases I kinda just stood there looking stupid.

The beaver is a good example of that actually, I thought it could at least attack! But no such luck.

I explained how I got my charms in the description of the video.

But to summarize, I trained at Ice Giants and Warriors for gold charms. Good drop rate, not very tough, can drop some okay items (I managed to get both pieces of the crystal key from them...) and they drop Gold, Green, Crimson, and Blue charms.

You can also kill Waterfiends if you're trying to get Crimson charms specifically.

Giant Rock crabs drop 10 of each only problem is you need like fire wave and barrage...for super effectiveness and i dont no if this true but from what ive done the faster u kill the better drop rate they have

That's not true =p - The faster drop rate part.

Giant Rock Crabs do drop 10 at a time, yes, but they're pretty crowded. It can be pretty hard to get the kill if you don't have a decent level.

Verac's is also good against them, though.
