if the space elevator is complete will it be taller than Olympus Mons on Mars because if it is taller than it it will be so awsome BURJ DUABI wil lose FOREVER.But I still dont get it.
looked like heliostats reflecting onto PVs on the ship, thought at first it looked also like a spiral climb by spinning the cable. Ok, I will go read the info now.
Every year (or couple of years) NASA holds a competition to see who can make the best self-powered space elevator. Obviously, this isn't actually going to happen for a while, but the competition is that the platform must travel a certain length (400m?) within a certain time to win. The prize money is something like $100,000 so there's probably some hype about this. It looks like a good possible entry.
I remember reading about this years ago, I think it was a story by Author C Clarke. It didn't make since to me back then. I recently read a story by Poul Anderson that mentioned one and it did make since and now I see this. The problem is the wind and if a plane flew into it. It does seem strange but possable. If they can get it to work it be cheeper to go into space than to fly across country.
Fascinating, I hadn't seen one of these before. It cropped up in conversation recently so that was pretty cool that you posted the video for us. Cheers, Lesley

I don't see the point of the exercise. The difficulty is in making the cable not the robot.

@asumazilla its more to get more publicity on the space elevator idea, rather than to figure out how to make a climber.
