The 1st time I heard this "Lieutenant Kije" was when I was a teen .... 33 rpm "Angel" records.... never forgot about it. THANKS for posting. btw i am past 60 now...hehhe!
Pure joy! Thank you. Nothing more iritating than having a tune in your head and not knowing what it is. Prokofiev was a genius! Russia must have been a wonderful place during his life. The joy he brought to mine.
@dicthash yes of course it is! Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn made it all up, he never got 8 years in the camps for criticising the workers best friend, strategist of genius and the greatest political theorist the world has ever seen.
@laqerhill lmfao obv i was on somthing when i put that im a music student sorry i ment it isnt a xmas song but obv russian sorry folks im obv failing :L
the story was about that liutenit kije never existed because the russion people did not want to tell the russion president that he did not realy exist or he would kill them so they had a fake funneral so the king would believe them
I would love for the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra to do this piece with Gustavo Dudamel. Check out Dudamel doing Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition.
Our concertmistriss is Russian and she pronounces the j as a really soft g. Like the J in jean. Thats the best way I can explain it in writing. (Key-jeay)
Trokia is actually the 4th mov of five in the Lieutenant Kije Suite
(and I forgot....) I have heard it anglicized as "Ki-jee" the "jee" sounding like "Gee" in "Gee Golly Gosh" and my Russian voice teacher seems to find that perfectly acceptable.
To the untrained ear, Lt. Kije sounds like tripe. And I did have a listen to your voyage to atlantis and that's why I said what I did. Lt. Kije is not intended to evoke feeling or emotion. The intent of the classical piece is to show the superb work of the composer and the ability and the dexterous skills of a fine orchestra. The two pieces are as different as night and day. Your VTA presents no challenge. Sorry :(
agree 1000000% with 'dlamiss' could listen to this all day. That's the magic in Prokofiev, never gets boring, always sounds fresh. The Montegues and Capulets is another example.
I remember watching a stop motion film of this when i was a kid. i've remembered it ever since, and it reminds me of myself trying to conduct a class full of 8 year olds on tom- toms, glockenpsiels, xylophones and recorders in one of my own compositions. i love it to bits and will be watching the latest stop go motion picture over christmas.

democracy is much-much worse than "Gulag". In fact "Gulag" is just another anti-Stalin and anti-Russia myth.

when my orchestra played this, I at least got to play glock :)
kdmw 2 years ago
i didnt know there was a glock part for this...for this particular movement there was just triangle, sleigh bells, and tambourine...weird...
is it from a different movement?

No, it was definitely this movement. Maybe a different arrangement?

The k is like the k in 'kill', the i is like the ee in 'feet', j is like the French j in 'je suis', the e is like the ye in 'yes'. Keezhye.
ilkinond 2 years ago 2
The cyrillic for it is Киже and the ж is like a soft "zhuh." so "Keezhye" is pretty accurate.

Sorry about that.....yes, there is a resemblance there. You have a keen eye.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I was a professional photographer. A "keen eye" goes with the territory in that line of work.

Nice but doesn't compare to The Isley Brothers' "Voyage To Atlantis".
GDK1 2 years ago
Eruh..... Lt. Kije is classical music? Voyage to Atlantis is mundane music? The two are at opposite ends of the music spectrum.
pelucitadered 2 years ago 2
This comment has received too many negative votes show
"voyage To Atlantis" evokes more feeling and emotion than this superficial tripe ever could. You better have a listen before you write anything else.
