I have a pair of JBL L166s, rated at 75W continous power at 8 ohms. Could you recommend a vintage receiver (Marantz, Sansui) that would be appropriate for them? Also, can a person run a cd player through a vintage amp? Thanks for any info.
there are many keys to having a set of speakers that sound great..first off, as said before, they must have enough drivers to cover all the spectrums....second off, they must be paired up with the right amp and or receiver and eq combo, third off correct size wire ...i have 4 sansui spx8000's and a sansui g7000 myself, and ive owned many receivers...i had a technics rated at 110 per channel, my sansuis....they sounded like crap on that, but put them on my g7000, and theyre smooth and rich
It really does seem that the key to good speakers is having several drivers to carry all the frequencies. Every high fidelity system I've ever heard whether it be a live PA or private home stereo always has speaker systems the don't rely only on one or two drivers to carry all the sound across the spectrum.
vintage audio? how vintage? i have an 1984 AR "turntable". is that vintage enough for you? As for speakers i would only use modern up to date speakers. Some of the old ones from the 60's and early 70's are ok like from KLH, Advent and AR. But that is as far as i'll go. Those old Marantz speakers could not hold a candle to some of the old Advents.
dude, cosmetics aside, those old marantz system look nice but you would do better to upgrade to modern electronics and speakers. Todays speakers are made with such hightech materials that even a small bookshelf speaker standing only 13" high will blow the woofers out of those marantz monstrosities you have for speakers. Check out what Paradigm, PSB and Monitor Audio are doing in terms of loud speakers innovations and technologies. You owe it to your ears.
@jogmas12 If it ain't broke don't fix it....been listen to the same style of music with my Marantz set up for years now..why change if I'm satisfied? and I really cannot see a 13" high speaker with a 6 inch woofer "blowing" away my 10" woofer...I know you weren't directing you're comment to me but I just had to say something being a Marantz owner.
@earnhardtfanthree dude, i have seen alot. You think i would trust my ears to a set of 3 way speakers with 15inch woofers retailing for $199.95 each when i can get a much smaller speaker 2 way with a 5.5 inch woofer costing just as much. Now i ask you. Which speaker is going to be more accurate, musically speaking?
@jogmas12 12 inch woofers and they retailed for just under 800 each and can produce way deeper sounds with a helluva lot more clarity....by the way...the HD880 4 way design
@jogmas12 I respect your politeness, usually people will continue to argue....these speakers were quite pricey for the day...but I believe they were worth it. Happy New Year.
i don't get turntables at all. I've just never been around them. Why can't you just put a vinyl into a turntable .. plug in speakers and then start the LP .. whats the thing under the turntable??? yes people will probably be annoyed at this comment but i have just never been around a record player ever and i wanna learn !!
@DrunkTankMusic Well... Turntables are not for the average music listener, I guess. It's a hobby and obsession, and for some magical unexplainable reason you get yourself forced to look and admire your set while it's playing. When you get a chance, play it. You'll understand. I mean, feel it, not understand... ^^
@DrunkTankMusic Google is your friend. Many guides and forums dedicated solely to TT's and even more to the finer points of each part. The piece under the TT in the video is probably an isolation mat, to reduce vibration and interference to the TT. Record players are still mechanical in nature and isn't instant gratification, that is the way it should be to a degree. Put the time in, get a quality table, learn about setup and care and enjoy what is a very unique experience.
I've got a vintage Marantz stereo system too it is the TA-100 with all the origional components: amp/tuner, tape deck, cd player, and fully functional turntable
Nice setup! I have 550HD at home + 6320 turntable + amazing 2130e tuner + PM300 amplifier and eq-10 from 80's. lowfreq speakers were replaced though, about 15 years ago, old ones were a bit aged (between frame and diaphragm, "sorround" just gone...), i think 550HD lost some of its "softness".
This Is One STUNNING SYSTEM! Both In Looks And Sound But Get Them Fronts Back On Them Speakers For Gods Sakes, If Anything Digs Them Cones How Bad Would You Feel?
Yeah I know what kind of poor equipment this is. If you want, I'd be happy to take this off your hands! I think you would be much happier with a Citizen stereo! lol
Why are phono, aux, tape and all those lights lit? Mine only one lights,,,the one you're on. My 2325 has a light out,,,the far left one around 88 on the fm dial. One thing I've done to cheat until I can get a bulb is pull the far right one so it looks halfway balanced. I did that on my 2270 anyway.
Kick azz speakers!.......They can definently blow the roof off any house! I have an all soundcraftsmen rack system with these speakers bridged @ 4ohm 1000watts RMS!!! 12 o'clock on my gains, and 5 or 6 clicks on the vol. and your heart will definently skip its beat! good job! 5 stars 4 u!
I had The Equalizer That I think went with the amp when I had it but I sold the amp do to the fact that none of the lights worked ecepts the stick and the left channel was fuzzy. I might still have the eq, but some of the sliders don't work at all.
Very Nice indeed, you have a helluva system there. Only one thing that makes me curl my lip: Whomever refoamed your woofers in those HD880's needs a good slapping! The TS parameters are not the same with foam attached on top of cone, plus they look "cheap" that way. That's Not how marantz engineers intended the design of that particular woofer. Just stating my opinion, don't mean to sound harsh. At least you still have the original woofers, where I would say most HD880's don't anymore.
Nice set up. I might get one of those receivers. The speakers look really nice. I will be hunting down those speakers when I get a job. They are a little big for the room I live in now. Great vid! Thanks for posting. How much do the HD speakers set ya back these days?
nice set up I love Marantz HD speakers...maybe too much I have & 7pairs lol 2 pair of the 880s, the 770's also sound great same driver compliment as the 880 in a smaller cabnet
I had the 2325 and I think the 2230 is the most musical out of all the models I had. The 2325 just seemed to lack detail for my ears. This is where Sansui has always fascinated me. Clarity and detail. Great looking unit thought. Marantz is definately one of the best looking vintage brands in my opinion, but musicality is speculative. Enjoy!
Nice! You can't go wrong with the 2325 and HD-880's. I had the same setup at one time.
The speaker manual recommends that you place them about 6-10ft apart. Mine are placed 9ft apart and I can't go much further. Once I placed them here, they really started to sing. I turned the midrange knob back one notch to get rid of a glaring sound.
I highly recommend experimenting with the placement if at all possible. It really paid off for me.

Can you write where the speakers are done? In which country?

@earnhardtfanthree well ok when it comes to large woofers and multi drivers one should spend more accordingly, i agree.
