I'm one of the many that thinks this movie is terrible (awful story and badly miscast). What a shame that they wasted such a good opportunity. 'Miami Vice' had the potential not only to be an excellent film, but a solid franchise. Simply updating the plot of the original pilot would have been a great place to start as far as story - Crockett's partner getting blown away, Tubbs looking to avenge his brother, the Calderone connection, etc. Too bad.

The whole premise of the story's on drug related crimes and human trafficking (hint: check the dictionary on the meaning of "vice") in Miami coming from said neighboring countries. You're like saying "what's with all the robots?" after watching TF3.

Lets have a show about Alaska and have it take place in Russia since you can ride your boat or jetski to Russia from Alaska. Look on a map, its almost touching. Seattle is close to Canada, etc.. The original miami vice does not take place in a 3rd world country yet still fights drugs.
This production is much better than the series orinal, which incidentally, turned out to be declining every year. This film is serious, dark, grim and realistic, with a great job of director, and very beautiful photo and wonderful soundtrack. Excellent production, I think one of the best thrillers I've ever seen.
the plots in michael mann movies tend to be kinda complex and hard to follow upon the first viewing which makes them difficult to appreciate immediately. the vast majority of people who say miami vice blows have only seen it once and/or can't get past colin farrell's somewhat overbearing performance and/or were expecting a remake of the tv show. amazing cinematography, beautifully shot, great action sequences. it separates itself from the popular tv show and transcends it in every way.
@case557 I've seen it two times and the second time I really apperciated how fucking terrible it was. The movie was atrocious. It was trying to hard to cater to the dumb kids of today and just used the title as a cash in. Should have just fucking renamed the movie. It had nothing in common with miami vice
@spicandspamful I could not disagree more about the idea of "cashing in" on the title. I see this film as Mann's (EP of the TV series btw) effort to take the franchise in a different direction, giving it more substance and grit. my biggest problem, too, is that I think a lot of people go into this film expecting, say, a Bad Boys, Fast and Furious, or SWAT kind of action blockbuster, when if you've seen Heat or Collateral, you'd know that you should be expecting much different from a Mann film.
@case557 Wow, very well put. I could never understand why people hated this movie so much.. I walked out of the theatre thinking, wow.. this is going to be a hit.. then the reviews came in and abysmal. I was so looking forward to a sequel.
@1aneeshsivan i totally agree with you, i have always admired the way he (michael mann)does his shots in his films...almost kinda first person something, with the slight jerkiness and all. i really like dante spinotti as his cinemaphotographer, great pair.
@nakumathefireman Thank you! Much agreed. Dion Beebe performed ground-breaking handheld shooting style in Collateral and Vice. Dante Spinotti did an excellent job with P.Enemies. I can truly say Public Enemies is definitely the best shot film I've ever viewed. Just spectacular! I tell people all the time, don't watch P.E and then try to watch normal T.V. You'll feel like blowing up your television!
