  • whoever made the comment about keith urban cutting this is a total dumbass. keith urban fuckin sucks this is real music,Texas music not Trashville slop. queef urban dont know shit about real music and neither do you

  • great Halloween song.....

  • If Keith Urban doesn't cut this I'm gonna reconsider my position on voodoo curses.....

  • @Penz2nz Are you kidding? Keith Urban couldn't never put the same kind of heart and soul into a song like this, ever. Keith Urban would ruin this song if he ever tried to cut it.

  • @12234nic11234: From the album The Ranch, the song, "Ghost In The Guitar" if you haven't heard it don't tell me he can't do this song justice...

  • 3:55 chill bumps,

  • Owen....Bm, G, A, F#m

  • Saw him in June not too far northeast of Aransas Pass. Doing well for a guy with diabetes, but his age is finally starting to get to him.

  • Superb!

  • This and Dublin blues are about my two favorite songs by Guy. This man Is a powerful songwriter.

  • Put this on, shut your eyes, and picture every word. I get chills every time.

This just shows you can still fill a room with music with only a guitar.

  • Utterly haunting song, yet such amazing lyrics and picking!!!

  • great tune!

  • WHAT ARE THE CORD TO THIS SONG

  • the last verse sent shivers down my spine, unreal!

  • He really is a under rated folk Legend he could sing the pants off that wannabe Bobby Dylan any day of the week.

  • @roltthehunter Bob Dylan actually said recently Guy Clark was one of his favorite artists.

  • @DJSkinnyHo Well that is understandable given his background in folk music... Does not change the fact Bobby's music is trash. Oh well shit happens .

  • @roltthehunter I actually hate Bob Dylan's "music", and Guy Clark is literally one of my heroes. Just wanted to clear things up haha

  • i think i have commented on this video before but i had to again also.........thats as good as it gets to me........

  • I haven't been familiar with his music to my loss, but I think you'd have to go about as far as you can to find a better crafted song than this!

  • Incredible storytelling. It's like a reworking of the old "crossroads" legends. And that playing, holy shit.

  • Nice...compliment each other perfectly.xx

  • Awesome! Verlon is great, too!

  • Keep it up.

  • Amatuers! LOL

  • I saw Guy Clark at the Kessler Theater in Dallas a few months back. I am not a country music fan, so much, but I was absolutely overwhelmed by his talent. This is one of his best songs, truly a masterpiece. Also, that Verlon guy is super nice.

  • @PatrickFreeman96 I was at the Kessler too. If you want to start with essential Guy Clark CDs, get Old Number One and Old Friends disks, and branch out from there. BTW, I'm about a year older than he is. Get into Townes van Zandt as well. You won't be disappointed. This is not "country" music. It's folk music in the tradition of Woody Guthrie. The music that grabs you in the gut and won't let go. Michelle Shocked called Guy Clark "God Clark" and I agree.

  • Greatest song ever!!

  • Nice Video

  • WoW! Let me say that again WOW! First, I never heard this song before. Watching those two guys pick like that, in perfect time. I have no idea how much time they pot into getting that right. That is flat out terrific.

I believe I will listen to a lot more of Guy Clark. Thanks for posting this.

  • My god this is amazing!! I'm usually a head banger and only listen to Heavy Metal and Death Metal but this is just amazing!! I have never heard anything like this before! Absolutely beautiful!

  • they know their onions..

  • This is fucking awesome. Two absolute masters.

  • hey no thumbs down yet, that must be a record...

  • Invokes the ghosts of every great folk guitarist and lyricist ever... The way he sings every line its like he's never ever heard his own song before. Utterly amazing.

  • @kakeboy07 - VERY well put - worth a thumbs up - such an amazing song - Clark sings so purely and Verlon's lead is just amazing - together they are an AMAZING duo. I'd love to see them live but sadly South Africa is a little off the radar for most country folk singers!

  • The Guitar, Randall Knike, The Cape - Three of the finest songs EVER written. Add to that the fact they're played by talented guitarist and sung sweetly with his husky voice - pure artistry!!!

  • I think this could be one of the greatest songs ever written , It is unreal. Guys delivery is like no other. I hope I get to see him live some day.

  • What a legend!

  • Geez. Speechless and tearful.

  • This song gives me goosebumps........I saw my name was on the case...

  • @JoeTom5 had the exact same thing, my hairs on my arms and head just stood straight up when he spoke/sang that line, must have looked like a mockingbird in frigid winter... First time I heard this song, will probably be eternal admirer of this guy. Do not know why, i listen to dylan, cash, van zandt, harper, vedder, drake etc, this guy never came up. Also no thumbs down yet, got to be a record

  • Guy Clark and Verlon Thompson go to a very special place in this song. Genuisville or the like ... it must be rarified air they're breathing up there.

  • Never fails to make the hair on my arms stand. Guy's the MAN! Him & Verlon are an unstoppable duo. This one, along with "Randall Knife" are sometimes hard for me to listen to. They hit pretty close to home.

  • this gave me chills.........awesome. Love the story.......thanks

  • Heard it twice in the last couple of weeks and I loooove it.

  • This is a pretty hard song to find guitar tabs for. Try searching for The Guitar tab.

  • @lazadar: Standard tuning, Capo II, Am-F-G-E progression. I fingerpick this one as I'm usually playing it solo. If you're trying to figure out what Verlon's doing, just watch him closely and get in the ballpark. Put your own self in the song from there.

  • man can these guys be any better =)

  • DAMN !! that's some powerful shit right there man !!! Sorry, only way I can put it ..I got the fan blowin on me at the moment here in NO-HO California, but that aint what;s got me the goosebumps tell ya what !!

  • What a cool tune. Verlon you are awesome, even if some folks do think you need some tech updates.

  • Good song guys

  • a song like this can make one Shit and Giggle

  • I had been to the Cactus Cafe!

  • @jman93support: I played there on their open stage one night in July of '09. Only got to play a couple of songs, but it was awesome to be able to play on the same stage as Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, and some of the other truly great names in Texas and folk music. Got chills just having the privilege of being up there. We still don't know what the long term fate of the Cactus is. Last person I saw there was Butch Hancock a couple weeks ago for the Cactus' end-of-an-era show.

  • OMG!!! this is AWESOME!!!

  • I herd this song on my way home one time and could not quit thinking about it. Great song

  • Takes you to a new place

  • @newporter42 \

hell yea it does. when i first heard this song I didnt know when or where I was going. :D

  • Wow!!!!!!

  • Sure the guy who brought me to guitar making... thanks with my heart for that... and thanks for all the songs...

    Martin

  • Is there a better simpler performing duo than Guy and Verlon? (except maybe steve and justin earle)

  • Pure magic.

  • Sometimes you write the song, sometimes the song writes you. Guy is a conduit for the heart and soul of texas music, the is a lot like the true story of SRV buying 1st wife (the strat he's buried with) before they'd even taken off the pawn shop wall in Austin.

  • That must one of the best songs written about a guitar...

  • This is soooo good! TY for the vid.........Great!

  • They play it on KPIG, available on the web.

  • gives me cold chills at the end. to bad they don't play this on regular radio. thank god for sirrus!

  • Who's playing the lick at 3:15?

  • This is great. What is his guitar?

  • he is a luthier and makes most of his own guitars

  • it all comes from texas

  • not really all from Texas. some of it is Irish. You tube, Chris De Burg Spanish Train and see where the tune comes from.

  • I have been listening to a lot of Guy lately. Boy can he write! I just posted a song that he inspired called "The Truck Song" . I know it is not as good as Guy, but it is my tribute to my hero!

    Curt

  • Chords appear to be Bm - G - A - F#7.

    What a brilliant song.

  • Or throw a capo on the second fret and play Am, F, G, E7. I just played it that way and it sounded perfect.

  • will someone with more talent than I tab this song!

  • Just had the pleasure to hear this song on the radio today, in Adelaide South Australia where have they been hiding this, its great thanks.

  • in Texas...

  • What a song!!

  • That would sound so much better if they got rid of those damn quacky undersaddle pick ups and bought some decent mics for those guitars,

  • @mthatcher61 Some people never accept the beauty of the moment. There are more candid moments of great beauty in life than those rehearsed studios will ever produce.

  • this has to be a trick song to find tabs for. type in the guitar tab and you get every one in history except this one lol.

  • No matter the venue, Guy and Verlon are a pleasure and a joy to spend time with - one of the great story tellers.

  • So cool... wow

  • Thye don't make 'em like Guy anymore, Steve Earle and Rodney Crowell are a few of the last great TX writiers who migrated here to Nashville in the 70's...

  • Absolutely awesome. Sad to miss his concert in Austin tonite, but Italy is kinda far away ;-)

  • thats some tasty lead playing right there...

  • @localbrewz this guy was a dear friend of townes.i dig him and his wife Judy.great people

  • @localbrewz this guy was a dear friend of townes.i dig him and his wife Judy.great people

  • @hotrodjagger His wife's name is Suzanna

  • luv it.........

  • below.....jealous......very...that would be great...hope you got some stories any to share?

  • They're such an amazing duo!

The last time I saw Guy and Verlon I took a friend (it was in Saratoga, California). After the show, we strolled backstage and visitted with Guy and Verlon for a while. She was so amazed that we could do that.

Also, that time I finally had the chance to tell Guy Clark that I know the word "desperado" because of his song. I first heard that song when I first learned to talk. Maybe I was three or four.

  • We (my wife, daughter and I) had a similar experience a few years ago when they played in Park City. Hung out with Guy and Verlon for about an hour drinking wine and talking about the music..... A real highlight!

  • Song gives me goose bumps everytime i hear it!

  • Wow.. Any musician can understand this song to its full meaning. love it. My brother told me about it and instantly it reminded me of my father..who has passed, great guitar player. I love it, and Guy . So far as jmycoskie my favorite too.

  • I love Guy Clark. Love this song, too. I agree with Chesterjetton ... so underrated!

  • One of my favorite songs. Performed in my home town.

  • Awesome guys.

  • Another instant Clark(along with Thompson) classic. Fine fretwork by Thompson. Visited a friend in Nashville few years back and went to the Bluebird Cafe. Just a couple pics on the walls. As I remember there was one of Guy and one of Townes hanging on the walls. My friend is gone - but not the memory... Here's to "Old Friends".

  • awesome song! i'm just now discovering Guy and townes...heard of em through rediscovering Steve Earle's music...these guys rule!!

  • i dont kno how he has never gotten to mainstream this is "solid country gold"

  • I've been a Guy Clark fan since I first saw him on stage in Nashville in 1975. This song is vintage Guy. Buy anything you can by him. Watch anything you can by him. He is an American icon. This song gave me chills the first time I heard it as well. Just got the new CD in the mail. Not a song on it I didn't like.

  • such a great storyteller and underrated check out a few of mine on the tube chesterjetton

  • I heard this song on BBC radio 2. I was in my car but I had to stop as I was so struck by its power. I couldnt wait to get home and listen again on the iPlayer. rare, simple and memorable poetry. love it!

  • @littlevern11 I had much the same experience, driving along with my friend and switched to a radio station which just started paying this song... we both just went WOW

  • @littlevern11 I wish I could meet everyone who loved this song and totally agreed with " thats some tasty playing".

I'd be a sweet to see this live.

Also, I would have likely crashed my car.

    Unreal guitarist and solo.

  • @Knucklesfaceup

thats why I stopped, as I would have crashed my car too!

  • Fantastic. Chilling. So far my favorite song ever.

  • Brilliant......The man is Brilliant!

  • I just heard The Guitar on WKSU Folk Alley. I am now a fan of this song and soon maybe Guy Clark. This guy is good!

  • This song gives me chills every time I hear it. I love it.

  • Guy Clark is a true treasure, if you have not seen him live, do it.

  • I heard this on Sirius the other day. When he said "When he shut the lid my name was on the case" It felt like a ghost ran up my spine with a jerk! WOW, Songwriters like this are such a tresure when they can evoke such emotion from someone. Great freaking song! And he knows it too! Lol.

  • i get the same feelin! Guy is truly amazing

  • This song is out on his new album, Somedays the Song Writes You, and it's SUCH a good album!

  • You can hear this and many other great songs on Sirius Satellite Radio Channel 63

  • Tremendous songwriter...

  • saw them play this last night in Minneapolis. AWESOME

  • wow thats soo cool!! <3

  • WooHoo.....hes playin the Belcourt 9/23!!! Can't wait!!!

  • I hope these two pass my way (manchester, england)

  • they are both masters and it's always so wonderful to see these old friends perform together!

  • Immense songwriter and singer...! gives me goosebumps

  • I met Guy at the Bluebird a few years back. Got to talk to him for a half hour or so. When I ask about Townes he just lit up like a Christmas tree. I could've listened to him tell about him Townes for as long as he would've cared to talk.

    Real nice guy.

Damn shame we can't hear his stuff on a radio anywhere.

  • 92.1 KNBT (a local New braunfels TX, americana radio station) plays this kind of music. It's where I heard this song in the first place

  • fraid my antenna won't reach that far Jimm. But thanks for the info, if I get back down that way, I'll be sure to check it out.

  • Bob Harris Country

  • I love songs that tell a story.

    This is A100 storytellin'

  • Chills down my spine. Guy can set a mood like no other.

  • saw them a couple of yrs ago at Huge's Room in Toronto. It was great because I was able to get tickets for my brother who had introduced Guy to me 15 yrs before, he came up from Ottawa. Aside from a few funny mistakes Guy and his buddy Verlon "Dam' Thompson were excellent live. His final song desperadoes waiting for a train..wow...incredible....

  • That's just how it was... In the Twilight Zone.

  • There are way too many good things that I can say here, so I'll just stick with "Wow..."..

  • Guy was at The Old quarter on May 7, 2008-Galveston TX. It was great to see Rex Bell and Guy see one another, after many years. I asked Guy when the last time was he played The Old Quarter..Guy said it must've been around '77 or '78, perhaps with Townes. May 7 was a GREAT magical night!!!

  • He played it yesterday afternoon at the New Orleans Jazz Fest. It was awesome.

  • Saw him play it live a couple days ago. Gave me the chills.

  • 'bout as real as it gets.

  • Hi, I'm a Limey picker - seen Guy many times, met him twice. Shivered with Randal Knife and the Dark but this one speaks to me because I am a guitarist; sometimes an old guitar - well "it plays you". This has happened to me a few times - once with a 1915 Gibson, once with a '70s Martin which I kept for twenty years. Guy speaks the truth ! - but he always does. More power to the boss of Texas singer-songwriters ! (and Verlon "Dam' Thompson !

  • I was in the front row too and it really was a tingle inducer! Both shows at the Cactus cafe were amazing! Hurry up with that album!

  • Holy Christ!

  • I was sitting in the front row at the Cactus Cafe on Friday February 27th for this concert. It was already the most amazing show I have seen but when Guy and Verlon came back on stage for one more song and they played "The Guitar" I was pretty much speechless and could only say "Wow". I had goosebumps on top of goosebumps. I thought I would have to wait until Aug/Sept when Guy's new album came out to hear this song again. Thank you, thank you, thank you to whoever did this!
