whoever made the comment about keith urban cutting this is a total dumbass. keith urban fuckin sucks this is real music,Texas music not Trashville slop. queef urban dont know shit about real music and neither do you
@Penz2nz Are you kidding? Keith Urban couldn't never put the same kind of heart and soul into a song like this, ever. Keith Urban would ruin this song if he ever tried to cut it.
@lazadar: Standard tuning, Capo II, Am-F-G-E progression. I fingerpick this one as I'm usually playing it solo. If you're trying to figure out what Verlon's doing, just watch him closely and get in the ballpark. Put your own self in the song from there.
I saw Guy Clark at the Kessler Theater in Dallas a few months back. I am not a country music fan, so much, but I was absolutely overwhelmed by his talent. This is one of his best songs, truly a masterpiece. Also, that Verlon guy is super nice.
@PatrickFreeman96 I was at the Kessler too. If you want to start with essential Guy Clark CDs, get Old Number One and Old Friends disks, and branch out from there. BTW, I'm about a year older than he is. Get into Townes van Zandt as well. You won't be disappointed. This is not "country" music. It's folk music in the tradition of Woody Guthrie. The music that grabs you in the gut and won't let go. Michelle Shocked called Guy Clark "God Clark" and I agree.

WoW! Let me say that again WOW! First, I never heard this song before. Watching those two guys pick like that, in perfect time. I have no idea how much time they pot into getting that right. That is flat out terrific.
I believe I will listen to a lot more of Guy Clark. Thanks for posting this.
My god this is amazing!! I'm usually a head banger and only listen to Heavy Metal and Death Metal but this is just amazing!! I have never heard anything like this before! Absolutely beautiful!
Invokes the ghosts of every great folk guitarist and lyricist ever... The way he sings every line its like he's never ever heard his own song before. Utterly amazing.
@kakeboy07 - VERY well put - worth a thumbs up - such an amazing song - Clark sings so purely and Verlon's lead is just amazing - together they are an AMAZING duo. I'd love to see them live but sadly South Africa is a little off the radar for most country folk singers!
The Guitar, Randall Knike, The Cape - Three of the finest songs EVER written. Add to that the fact they're played by talented guitarist and sung sweetly with his husky voice - pure artistry!!!
@JoeTom5 had the exact same thing, my hairs on my arms and head just stood straight up when he spoke/sang that line, must have looked like a mockingbird in frigid winter... First time I heard this song, will probably be eternal admirer of this guy. Do not know why, i listen to dylan, cash, van zandt, harper, vedder, drake etc, this guy never came up. Also no thumbs down yet, got to be a record
Guy Clark and Verlon Thompson go to a very special place in this song. Genuisville or the like ... it must be rarified air they're breathing up there.
Never fails to make the hair on my arms stand. Guy's the MAN! Him & Verlon are an unstoppable duo. This one, along with "Randall Knife" are sometimes hard for me to listen to. They hit pretty close to home.

@jman93support: I played there on their open stage one night in July of '09. Only got to play a couple of songs, but it was awesome to be able to play on the same stage as Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, and some of the other truly great names in Texas and folk music. Got chills just having the privilege of being up there. We still don't know what the long term fate of the Cactus is. Last person I saw there was Butch Hancock a couple weeks ago for the Cactus' end-of-an-era show.
Sometimes you write the song, sometimes the song writes you. Guy is a conduit for the heart and soul of texas music, the is a lot like the true story of SRV buying 1st wife (the strat he's buried with) before they'd even taken off the pawn shop wall in Austin.
I have been listening to a lot of Guy lately. Boy can he write! I just posted a song that he inspired called "The Truck Song" . I know it is not as good as Guy, but it is my tribute to my hero!
@mthatcher61 Some people never accept the beauty of the moment. There are more candid moments of great beauty in life than those rehearsed studios will ever produce.
Thye don't make 'em like Guy anymore, Steve Earle and Rodney Crowell are a few of the last great TX writiers who migrated here to Nashville in the 70's...
The last time I saw Guy and Verlon I took a friend (it was in Saratoga, California). After the show, we strolled backstage and visitted with Guy and Verlon for a while. She was so amazed that we could do that.
Also, that time I finally had the chance to tell Guy Clark that I know the word "desperado" because of his song. I first heard that song when I first learned to talk. Maybe I was three or four.
We (my wife, daughter and I) had a similar experience a few years ago when they played in Park City. Hung out with Guy and Verlon for about an hour drinking wine and talking about the music..... A real highlight!
Wow.. Any musician can understand this song to its full meaning. love it. My brother told me about it and instantly it reminded me of my father..who has passed, great guitar player. I love it, and Guy . So far as jmycoskie my favorite too.
Another instant Clark(along with Thompson) classic. Fine fretwork by Thompson. Visited a friend in Nashville few years back and went to the Bluebird Cafe. Just a couple pics on the walls. As I remember there was one of Guy and one of Townes hanging on the walls. My friend is gone - but not the memory... Here's to "Old Friends".
I've been a Guy Clark fan since I first saw him on stage in Nashville in 1975. This song is vintage Guy. Buy anything you can by him. Watch anything you can by him. He is an American icon. This song gave me chills the first time I heard it as well. Just got the new CD in the mail. Not a song on it I didn't like.
I heard this song on BBC radio 2. I was in my car but I had to stop as I was so struck by its power. I couldnt wait to get home and listen again on the iPlayer. rare, simple and memorable poetry. love it!
@littlevern11 I had much the same experience, driving along with my friend and switched to a radio station which just started paying this song... we both just went WOW
I heard this on Sirius the other day. When he said "When he shut the lid my name was on the case" It felt like a ghost ran up my spine with a jerk! WOW, Songwriters like this are such a tresure when they can evoke such emotion from someone. Great freaking song! And he knows it too! Lol.

Real nice guy.
Damn shame we can't hear his stuff on a radio anywhere.
saw them a couple of yrs ago at Huge's Room in Toronto. It was great because I was able to get tickets for my brother who had introduced Guy to me 15 yrs before, he came up from Ottawa. Aside from a few funny mistakes Guy and his buddy Verlon "Dam' Thompson were excellent live. His final song desperadoes waiting for a train..wow...incredible....
Guy was at The Old quarter on May 7, 2008-Galveston TX. It was great to see Rex Bell and Guy see one another, after many years. I asked Guy when the last time was he played The Old Quarter..Guy said it must've been around '77 or '78, perhaps with Townes. May 7 was a GREAT magical night!!!
Hi, I'm a Limey picker - seen Guy many times, met him twice. Shivered with Randal Knife and the Dark but this one speaks to me because I am a guitarist; sometimes an old guitar - well "it plays you". This has happened to me a few times - once with a 1915 Gibson, once with a '70s Martin which I kept for twenty years. Guy speaks the truth ! - but he always does. More power to the boss of Texas singer-songwriters ! (and Verlon "Dam' Thompson !
I was sitting in the front row at the Cactus Cafe on Friday February 27th for this concert. It was already the most amazing show I have seen but when Guy and Verlon came back on stage for one more song and they played "The Guitar" I was pretty much speechless and could only say "Wow". I had goosebumps on top of goosebumps. I thought I would have to wait until Aug/Sept when Guy's new album came out to hear this song again. Thank you, thank you, thank you to whoever did this!

@roltthehunter Bob Dylan actually said recently Guy Clark was one of his favorite artists.

@DJSkinnyHo Well that is understandable given his background in folk music... Does not change the fact Bobby's music is trash. Oh well shit happens .

I was in the front row too and it really was a tingle inducer! Both shows at the Cactus cafe were amazing! Hurry up with that album!
