@Ginnyclass I'm from America. They use the same floors as in this video. It's sort of annoying because it makes it harder to turn than dancing on a wooden floor. They say that covering is made to protect cement and untreated wooden floors. Some people say it actually makes it easier to dance on. I object. It's safer tho than a wooden floor. Vaganova is world famous tho. I'm sure they know what they're doing.
@snooze22jen We use these floors in Australia as well and I agree that they are much harder to turn on than wooden floors. Luckily though for some reason the studio where we hold our exams still has wood flooring.
@snooze22jen No, the harder to turn on the floor, the better training we are having! On wooden floor they put on water to make it harder to turn but it doesn't work well! It's a SCHOOL, a place for work and for training not a place for performance and showing off. When we are trained on hard floors, then we build up our force for the turns and it's actually very good for dancers! In the Paris Opera Ballet School, they use super sticky floors and it's not even flat!! So it's designed for that :)
@chun25011 My old ballet coach used to teach in my current conservatory's old building, which had wooden floors in it. His students covered the bottoms of their shoes in powder, so they wouldn't slip (and it works pretty well)...not water (which would probably make it actually more slippery, as you said), but I do agree that it does give you a better work out than on a wooden floor. Sooo I guess that's another benefit of it. I never said it made training worse....it's just harder to turn on.
I have to show this to my old-fashioned teacher... whenever somebody complains about the wooden floor she assures them that everywhere in Russia they are dancing on that floor... but obviously even at vaganova they changed their minds...
This is from Diana and Acteon just incase some of you were wondering :)

Thank goodness they have replaced the old wooden floor, and watering can, with a more modern surface. Looks newly decorated as well
