Don't flatter yourself, we have relief programs ranging from Government funded to free market nonprofit to college support. The keyword is indeed capitalizing. These projects are rife with politics deciding which contractor to use and pay with the government's money. Not 1 cent is gained in profit. The number one reason for those cancellations is cost. Often times some bullshit reason is coughed up claiming a project isn't safe when in fact it is but the cost is too high.

The future of space travel will be private companies providing transportation services to the public. It will be safe and it will be sustainable.

They technically have had an escape pod the entire time they were developing this. It's called a Soyuz capsule and the Russians have been launching people into space in them since the 1960s. Nowadays they juggle the launches so that each new crew docks at the ISS, stays for the duration of the mission, and leaves in the same capsule when their replacement arrives in their own.
