If i collected the the acorns (red oak) this october, did the sink or float test, kept the good ones and stored them in refrigerator for stratification, can i plant them this december? And will they germinate in the refrigerator or only once i remove them and place them in soil at room temperature?
I collect seeds every year and when they are 2-4 years old I plant them and also give lots away to friends and anyone who will take one, theres nothing better than to look at a tree 10 years later and say to yourself WOW....
I went in the woods today and could not even find any acorns. Of course, my dad had the timber people whack about every oak tree we have down. You know, the almight dollar comes before anything. There is one oak tree down there but no acorns.
Question: what can i do with so many acorns falling on my yard ,falling off from as many as eight oak trees? are they good for something other than growing more trees?, or can they be used for compost , or can a product be made from it? your response would greatly be appreciated!
Hi, try collecting Acorns as son as they fall to the ground. then place them in a pastic bag and into the fridge for 1 month, then place them in a bowl of water, the ones that float are no good, then plant them in a long container such as 1 litre orange juice box (one for each acorn) place them outside over so they become tough. dont worry if the leafes fall off in winter. I've grown about 30 Oaks so far
I regret following the advice of this video! I removed my seedlings recently and most of the roots were so intertwined that many of them died from the stress of digging them out of the 'group pot.' Instead, I highly recommend making biodegradable pots out of newspaper so that it's one seedling per pot. The survival rate is much higher, the material is cheap and you don't have to untangle the roots from a 'group pot.' However, IF you do use a group pot, soak them in water to untangle the roots.
Thanks for the info! We need a lot more people to start planting some darn trees man. And you're doing more than your part. Thanks on behalf of earth.
