@thomasbryn1 All i can say is for a 19 year old i have read the islam quran, the hindu Bhagavad Gita, and the christian bible all with open mind and heart, and for some reason the only one that reached me and filled me with some kind of meaning of love and peace was the christian bible... I have also taken mythology and world religion courses and still my faith is unshakable and solid.

We must be very analitical with the new songs, because they sound good but many of them lack of biblical truth... And we win nothing by singing a "cool" Jesus song but a not correct one, maybe God is not pleased with them.
"He became sin" and the rest of it is "who knew no sin, that we may become His righteousness" (because Jesus did not sin while on earth) is being used as a "visual" to say that Jesus was born into the sinful world to save us...hence "Jesus Messiah" and Messiah means Savior. I am very pleased that you listen to the words closely enough to think about what they mean but I think in this case, the analytical thinking may have gone off the path a little.
Chris Tomlim is quoting directly from scripture. "God made him who had no sin be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God" 2 Cor 5:21. You can't get more theologically sound than quoting scripture.

No, I'm asking, because the cords listed are by formation, not actual tone. IE what's listed as G is actually raised up to A or B or something by the capo. So I'm asking if it's capo-ed so I can know if I should play 3 or 4 frets above what's layed out on the sheet. I never planned to capo my bass, that's just silly.
A capo is a tool, just like any other. Some of the best professional guitarists in the world use a capo. It is no more cheating than alternate tunings or using your thumb. GET OVER IT JAY.
i think he capo the 3rd fret in this video. But in recording like he said in the video its actually in the key of B; which means played in the key of G, with capo on the fourth fret. Hope that helps! Cheers!

But I'm afraid the 'evidence' you speak of is not evidence for a god, but instead is clear evidence for evolution through natural selection. hm. the first line says "He became sin". But Jesus never "became" sin. Sin in a sense if man=sin Jesus=man Jesus=sin?....but Jesus never was sin. He was surrounded and saw sin, but never sinned. Christ became OUR sin. He became THE sin. Yes, he was sinless, but the song speaks of the "rescue for sinners, and the ransom from heaven". Christ became sin, OUR sin as a ransom for us. The Christian music industry would be best to either: A) disband entirely, embracing the fact that art is art and being creative is in and of itself an act of worship, or B) overcome the identity crisis that plagues so many of the products, motives, and people within its walls. To of course never stop gauging the relevance and fruit your "ministry" bares, but to get over the myth that says cutting-edge art and a Christian worldview are mutually exclusive.
Jesus is the ransom from heaven. Our sin demands a ransom, and Jesus acts as that ransom for us. We're being ransomed from sin by our God from heaven.
And I think lyrics like NAME ABOVE ALL NAMES can't be used enough. John repeatively uses that line in Revelation, because it is the only way he can express how great our God is. If this song is really about worshipping God, than we must realize God never gets sick of hear how great he is, how his name is above all names.
in the chorus he sings "the ransom from heaven." doesnt that mean hes redeeming/delivering us from heaven. shouldn't he be ransoming us to heaven? plus, when i was talking about cliche worship music, his chorus says "name above all names." doesnt he use that line in the bridge for how great is our god? i's used in the bible many times as a name for jesus, but come on. by the year 2010 we're going to have the same songs repeating. we can have the same themes, but not lyrics. there's a difference.
You do realize that some Christian/Gospel music isn't about being pleasing to the ear; it's about opening your heart and pouring out praise. Go listen to jazz if you want something else. The difference is in unity through Jesus.

In that case.. why is he selling tons of CD's and with the passion movement? Fact is- in Western Music there are a few chords- I IV V ii,iii vi and a few other borrowed chords from other keys. Singing and writing worship music is about opening your heart to God. The best thing about these songs is that it only matters that you are praising God, which is the most important part! God takes everything as new when you are praising him. Its not like he says, "Well, I heard that last week." He loves that we are praising him, and that is all that matters!!

I agree, two guitars playing the same thing can get monotonous. I usually try to have one of the guitars play with a capo. For example if a song is in G I'll have one guitar play in G and another play in D with a capo at the 5th fret. This really opens up the sound. Give it a try.
it is true that many Christian music (particularly songs intended for worship) are similar in use of chords. But i think the purpose is allow people to play and sing such songs to worship for themselves and giving (much) room for one to be creative in creating their own versions of it.
But that's is also why there are creative artists like David Crowder and Shane & Shane and others.
I think God has made music to be as limitless and as infinite as He is. His beauty is evident in the most complicated works of music and in the simplicity of songs like this. While God himself can never be explained, He reveals himself in the most simple ways.

@thomasbryn1 All i can say is for a 19 year old i have read the islam quran, the hindu Bhagavad Gita, and the christian bible all with open mind and heart, and for some reason the only one that reached me and filled me with some kind of meaning of love and peace was the christian bible... I have also taken mythology and world religion courses and still my faith is unshakable and solid.

We must be very analitical with the new songs, because they sound good but many of them lack of biblical truth... And we win nothing by singing a "cool" Jesus song but a not correct one, maybe God is not pleased with them.

"He became sin" and the rest of it is "who knew no sin, that we may become His righteousness" (because Jesus did not sin while on earth) is being used as a "visual" to say that Jesus was born into the sinful world to save us...hence "Jesus Messiah" and Messiah means Savior. Your comment does not hold enough merrit. I am very pleased that you listen to the words closely enough to think about what they mean but I think in this case, the analytical thinking may have gone off the path a little.

Chris Tomlim is quoting directly from scripture. "God made him who had no sin be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God" 2 Cor 5:21. You can't get more theologically sound than quoting scripture.

The bible doesn't change. What Chris is saying in this song is just like the WORD, over - stating the obvious. It's all about repitition when you think about it. We retain only 33% of what we hear anyway - that's probably why we go to church 3 times a week!!

No, I'm asking, because the cords listed are by formation, not actual tone. IE what's listed as G is actually raised up to A or B or something by the capo. So I'm asking if it's capo-ed so I can know if I should play 3 or 4 frets above what's layed out on the sheet. I never planned to capo my bass, that's just silly.

A capo is a tool, just like any other. Some of the best professional guitarists in the world use a capo. It is no more cheating than alternate tunings or using your thumb. GET OVER IT JAY.

i think he capo the 3rd fret in this video. But in recording like he said in the video its actually in the key of B; which means played in the key of G, with capo on the fourth fret. Hope that helps! Cheers!

hm. the first line says "He became sin". But Jesus never "became" sin. Sin in a sense if man=sin Jesus=man Jesus=sin?....but Jesus never was sin. He was surrounded and saw sin, but never sinned. And God doesn't ever tempt you, so I find it kind of weird when it says He became sin. Anyone else notice that? Or am I missing something?

Christ became OUR sin. He became THE sin. Yes, he was sinless, but the song speaks of the "rescue for sinners, and the ransom from heaven". Christ became sin, OUR sin as a ransom for us. At least that's the way i interpret the lyric. And far be it from me to pretend to have all the answers. Just a guy trying to figure things out. God is God. I am not.

Haha yea I found out. One of our church pastors told me the verse that the song is derived from. It comes from 2 Corinthians...says something about Christ becoming sin on behalf of the world.

The Christian music industry would be best to either: A) disband entirely, embracing the fact that art is art and being creative is in and of itself an act of worship, or B) overcome the identity crisis that plagues so many of the products, motives, and people within its walls. Jesus is the ransom from heaven. Our sin demands a ransom, and Jesus acts as that ransom for us. We're being ransomed from sin by our God from heaven.
And I think lyrics like NAME ABOVE ALL NAMES can't be used enough. John repeatively uses that line in Revelation, because it is the only way he can express how great our God is. If this song is really about worshipping God, than we must realize God never gets sick of hear how great he is, how his name is above all names.

in the chorus he sings "the ransom from heaven." doesnt that mean hes redeeming/delivering us from heaven. shouldn't he be ransoming us to heaven? plus, when i was talking about cliche worship music, his chorus says "name above all names." doesnt he use that line in the bridge for how great is our god? i's used in the bible many times as a name for jesus, but come on. by the year 2010 we're going to have the same songs repeating. we can have the same themes, but not lyrics. there's a difference.

The great thing is that Chris doesnt probably care what anyone cares about his dress. (exept God) After a while you get tired of the pressure having to fit in and start to wear what you like. In that case.. why is he selling tons of CD's and with the passion movement? Fact is- in Western Music there are a few chords- I IV V ii,iii vi and a few other borrowed chords from other keys. Unless you delve into jazz and stuff you won't see that much difference in music. Sorry but it is true. What matters is touching the heart of God. Complex music structure can and could do that. And so can simple music. Chris is awesome and his music causes people to seek God. What else is there?

Singing and writing worship music is about opening your heart to God. The best thing about these songs is that it only matters that you are praising God, which is the most important part! God takes everything as new when you are praising him. Its not like he says, "Well, I heard that last week." He loves that we are praising him, and that is all that matters!!

well the chords to this song are, g am7 g/b c2(no3) g am7 g/b c2(no3) g/d c2(no3), for the verse, and the chorus is, g c2(no3) g dsus g c2(no3) g/b dsus g. then the bridge chords are, am7(4) g/b c2(no3) dsus am7(4) g/b c2(no3) dsus. and there is a capo on the third fret for this version. but on the normal cd recorded version its capoed on the fourth fret. but you can capo it however its easier to sing for you.

A regular major chord is made up of the 1st 3rd and 5th notes in a scale, for example a C chord is C (1st note in C scale) E (3rd note in C scale) and G (5th note in C scale). So, a C(no 3) would be a C chord that omits the E note. This chord is also known as a C5 chord.

I agree, two guitars playing the same thing can get monotonous. I usually try to have one of the guitars play with a capo. For example if a song is in G I'll have one guitar play in G and another play in D with a capo at the 5th fret. This really opens up the sound. Give it a try.

it is true that many Christian music (particularly songs intended for worship) are similar in use of chords. But i think the purpose is allow people to play and sing such songs to worship for themselves and giving (much) room for one to be creative in creating their own versions of it.
But that's is also why there are creative artists like David Crowder and Shane & Shane and others.

I agree, but its not just about the music. Chris Tomlin has a lyric-driven kind of songwriting style, on most of his songs, not all.

I think God has made music to be as limitless and as infinite as He is. His beauty is evident in the most complicated works of music and in the simplicity of songs like this. While God himself can never be explained, He reveals himself in the most simple ways.
