It's interesting how they're transitioning for the show starting with someone who's an actor and less known for singer, Dan, then Darren, who's basically known for both, then to Nick who seems mainly as a singer, though he has done those Disney shows... It's interesting to see what each actor alters in the portrayal, even though one could say this about any change in actor, but even more when coming from different backgrounds, I guess. DFTBA
@ntcssj I never thought of that! But you're right - they're really good transitions when it comes to that :) And I for one hope that Nick does a better job acting in this show than he did in the few episodes I saw of his Disney show...Nonetheless, it would be really cool to go see Nick in the show just to see how each of the 3 actors brings different things to the character :) DFTBA to you too!
I didn't realise, but How to Succeed is really catering to famous actors! Dan, then Darren, and now Nick Jonas? Interesting...
Also, TOTALLY agree w/the fangirl thing. I saw Promises, Promises w/Sean Hayes & Kristin Chenoweth, but I found ppl to still be really respectful of the other amazing cast as well (probably b/c Kristin & Sean are theater ppl to begin with), but incidents like w/Darren are insulting to the other AMAZING talent that Broadway has.
@allystandsforawesome Things like that are reasons I LOVE seeing shows - because the people seeing the shows are usually theatre people too, or are at least acquainted with theatre-ness, so everyone is really nice and caring and respectful, and there is (usually) little to no fangirling going on...Broadway talent is just so amazing and basically unknown to a ton of people, which I wish was different. They're all just so talented and deserve recognition!! :)
@munkinone Yeah...Like it's nice to see people you like/look up to, but when you just freak out over them, it's like...I'd rather have a decent conversation with someone rather than just be irrationally crazy, I guess...And yes. StickAid with Charlie...that was just a bit ridiculous. *sigh*
I do agree with the fangirl concept, I've seen it at Summer in the City and at a Maureen Johnson book party, both involving Charlie McDonnell. I ended up meeting him because a fangirl wanted a picture of him and since I was nearest, was asked to do it for him. I asked Charlie if it was ok, he did some shots with the girl and I did apologise for it. He was fine with it but it still didn't make the events less awkward and just had a mix of those for Charlie and the other for Maureen.
@dc8r17 Charlie fangirls definitely rival Darren fangirls (although I fall into both of those categories...I'm just more "inward" with my fangirliness, I guess)...People just need to calm down!
You are spot on with the stage door thing, and it's not just with Broadway. People were like that all the time at my high school if someone really popular was in it or something. It really kinda sucks when you walk out as an actor and can feel the disappointment. i was a techie most of the time, so i got it a lot, but go tto where it made me laugh. We'd walk out, they'd start to get excited, and then you'd see the "Wait, who are you?" looks on their faces.
@backstagedriver It was kind of the same at my school too, but the "popular kids" within the theatre department weren't really popular when it came to the rest of the school, and for the most part, we were all friends, which was really nice :) But I wish that techies got more recognition than they do - we seriously wouldn't have a show without you guys!!! (Also, your username is pretty awesome :P)
Your points about fangirls are spot on. I mean I can fangirl with the best of them, but you have to respect other people and respect the fangirl-subject's personal space. The other actors deserve as much recognition as Darren, and it's sad that they didn't get that. Also it had to be kind of scary for Darren when he walked out. Can you imagine a group of crazed girls all pushing towards you in one huge mass? Terrifying.
@AliciaMo12 Exactly. And I totally agree - if a mass of shrieking girls was pushing toward me (with only a tiny metal fence holding them back), that would scare me quite a lot :P
That's why I try and avoid really fangirly events. Extreme fangirls can be really disrespectful. They go to see one person and nobody else matters.
But I'm glad the show was good and that he did a good job! I saw it with Dan and I agree--he's not the greatest singer, but it was a fantastic production and he was a fantastic performer.
@tallatstarbucks Same. Like I said, I'm definitely a fangirl too, but I'm more inward with my fangirliness? I just don't understand how the crazies can be so screamy and pushy and just...yeah I don't get it. But yes - totally agree with the Dan thing. He's a completely fantastic performer.
@lizlikestolaugh It's because a lot of them are like 12-14. And they don't think of the people they're fangirling as people.
I think that Dan is a much better actor on stage than on screen. I'm not crazy about him in the HP films, but I loved him in How to Succeed and he was absolutely INCREDIBLE in Equus. And not just because he was naked for a few minutes.
@tallatstarbucks GAAH I wish I could have seen Dan in Equus...I read the play, and it was so good! Granted, it was creepy and somewhat disturbing, but fantastic nonetheless.
@RyanIsMeBlog I feel like Darren just does that to people...makes them lose the ability to think straight and therefore cause them to become flustered... *sigh* haha
@DiagonAlii I totally agree - and it's SUPER frustrating when there are people waiting there who didn't even see the show...I think one of the groups of girls had been waiting there for like 7 hours or something just to see him/get an autograph. Ridiculous. But yes, it was LOVELY 'meeting' my, ah, future husband, as I'm sure it was lovely meeting yours :P
Anyway, we already discussed this but I'M GLAD YOU HAD AN AMAZING TIME and I'm so proud of Darren and I'm so glad that we both got to see our future husbands as J. Pierpont Finch. H2Succeed fo lyfe <3
And ugh, I feel like there are a lot of fangirls out there who were excited to see him in the show, but were even more excited about getting his autograph just so they could be like "OMG I HAVE DARREN CRISS'S SIGNATURE". In the end, they have to realize that they just had the privilege of seeing him perform on Broadway, and that not getting his signature is not the end of the world. Okay. Rant over. I think.
It's interesting hearing this and comparing it with my experience seeing Dan. There were obviously a lot of fangirls at the stage door, but I think there were also a lot of people who just enjoyed the show, and therefore people were more respectful toward the other actors, which was nice. However, I know what you mean about people only wanting Dan's/Darren's autograph and therefore disallowing me to get the other actor's autographs. (To be continued because now you have me ranting...)

Compared to the Tardis, the pygmypuff looks so huge! A giant pygmypuff should be the next Doctor Who monster.
