@skuterixas91 I assume you like the film? Actually I think it was quite well made, and I'm a big Kirk Douglas fan.... when I said "horrible movie" I just meant thematically it was very dark and depressing. I suppose that could be misinterpreted
An authentic masterpiece. The writing, the acting, the cinematography: All are absolutely first-rate. This movie has a well-deserved place in the pantheon of film and, indeed, culture.
Powerful film, One of Kubrick and Douglas's all time greats, Richard Anderson (who later went on to play The Six Million Dollar Man's boss Oscar Madison a couple of decades later on TV) is also superb as the prosecutor.
One of the actors playing a "coward" is actually a ww2 Vet fighter pilot. He flew F6F Hellcats off the Carrier Essex. Shot down 7 Japanese planes and contributed to the sinking of 5 ships.
ralph meeker was in the navy, timothy carey wasn't in the air force either and joseph turkel definitely isn't buried in arlington (i hope not anyway- he's not dead)
ah- i've just seen your other comment where you named him- wayne morris.
i was confused at first, as although his character is a coward, he isn't court martialled for it. (he's the one kirk douglas orders to officiate at the execution, right?)
i didn't know that stuff about him, that's interesting. and he's very good in this film.
Thank you very much for posting this! I heard this as a sample in the song From The Mountains To The Prairies by the great band From Monument To Masses and I was looking all over the internet to find its origin.
The best picture of war, in Europe this picture was censured for twenty years! Because it is based on a true story in the first World War and a great vision of that story by "Stanley Kubrick" about the "GLORY" of "WAR" !!!
This relates to what Jack Murtha did to the Haditha Marines. This needs to be shown in every high school across America. Maybe then the youth of today will finally learn what patriotism and honor are. Believe it!
Lambs to the slaughter, end of story. Good direction, but not a terribly good script.

KD deserves much credit for busting the infamous McCarthy era blacklist , and hiring Dalton Trumbo as chief writer for this flick.

Douglas is one of the best actors alive.
Especially his work in this movie places him at the top.

One irony is...
One of the actors playing a "coward" is actually a ww2 Vet fighter pilot. He flew F6F Hellcats off the Carrier Essex. Shot down 7 Japanese planes and contributed to the sinking of 5 ships.
