I cant take pro gaming. If i cant sit there and enjoy myself, then there's no point in me playing it. I could probably go pro if i wanted to but i smoke too much weed to take anything seriously lol
Gaming is the fastest growing business and sport, and im glad :) Its true strength. True happiness is being were you are supposed to be, true strength is doing what you want to do. Nothing is better doing what u like and having a job that u like. Nothing is more IMPORTANT or PRODUCTIVE than doing what u like, no matter how much money u earn. Sure we should all help others, evolve our technology and understanding, get the people freedom and truth. But gamers know so much about this :D
Perhaps.. NOT so epic game though. The controls for starcraft are so ass backwards that you need ADD to be capable of tolerating the psychological strain of it. HOWEVER, starcraft does have a lot of strategy and tactics and is very creative and inventive with regards to the intellectual artistry implied.
@TausMunk the ability to select an entire maxed out army into one control group is certainly an improvement on the game theory, HOWEVER, many of the most basic components of the game are highly tedious and distracting. especially with games that involve tactics, strategy, and horizons related to base trading, you need a psychological atmosphere conducive to a low pressure, contemplative state of mind.
I'd rather shake my head violently left and right than become a master of macro in SC1 or SC2.
@katsumorymoto Well, most people would agree that the difficulty is one of the fun factors. Starcraft is *very* skill based, mechanical and otherwise. I do agree that it can be very difficult, but I would never say that was a bad thing, since it makes room for improvement, which is vital in any game with the goals that Starcraft has (competitive, esports, spectatorsport). Oh, and a side note: Becoming a 'master of macro' in SC2 takes like 200 APM, and in SC1 about 350-400... Big difference :b
@TausMunk I also consider football players and in general, ANY sports player to be a "no lifer" wasting their life. In fact, on Earth I think it's unrealistic to expect that it's possible to legitimately have a life.
I guess what worries me is simply how confident John The Translator is in praising anyone who masters SC2 like they're the 2nd coming of Christ or something. The whole thing reeks of sensationalism and shallowness imo. Especially when kids replay the speech over n over while cryin.
@willmo42 I think you might be sensationalizing the ethical implications of social discrimination's appropriateness when it comes to valid vs invalid game theory recognition in terms of cultural integration and social development.
@katsumorymoto what does crying have anything to do with cultural intergration... it's nothing but sheer emotion his speech was about standing up to naysayers and in this case his example was with nestea... imagine if my parents or anyone close to me said my playing any other sport like Football or rugby or tennis or baseball was a waste of life... im not trying to talk down on what you said it just didn't make any sense to me
@willmo42 I place "e-sports" in the same category as regular sports. But I also look down on people who play sports professionally because I don't think mankind's economy is developed enough where entertainment is a reliable way of making a living, unless of course your presence in that industry is inadvertently stirring up dissension like how a right-wing republican can easily find work trolling people on the radio or something.
It's not amazing to play SC for a living. It's OK... not amazing.
@katsumorymoto Honestly, just the fact that you said "right-wing republican can easily find work trolling people on the radio." shows how biased and uneducated you are. Anyone who knows the very basics of debating wouldn't say something that unrelated to the topic; especially when all it does is further show your one-sided view. If you said 'political commentators,' then you might sound the slightest bit intelligent. Please learn how to express your opinion properly before looking stupid.
@Starcrafterz why is your entire argument based upon wording? you sound more like journalist spinning a story then a person with a brain when you do that....
@detaono "Also, the very fact that you are on youtube invalidates your argument. Youtube is a part of the entertainment industry, just like spectator sports and movies. The simple fact is, humans who work grinding jobs in the service, production, and resource industries need entertainment in order to relieve stress." I posted this in response to Katsumorymoto's comment as well. This clearly shows I backed my argument up with logic. My better is better than your better.
@katsumorymoto Also, the very fact that you are on youtube invalidates your argument. Youtube is a part of the entertainment industry, and nothing else. The simple fact is, humans who work grinding jobs in the service, production, and resource industries need entertainment in order to relieve stress. However, I love how you try to make a legitimate argument yet still use words like 'trolling.'
@willmo42 It's like if I told you that I make a living with youtube videos. You look at the most successful youtube videos and you see things like Nyan Cat that gets 41 million views. Then you look at youtube channels like Fred and RayWilliamJohnson and it starts to become apparent how controversy makes content illegible to most human beings.
@CEShannVfB As a teacher I'm sure you appreciate scientific facts instead of conjectures. I agree, addiction is not good. But that is true for anything, ranging from alcohol, to video games; from watching television to sexual deviations.
As with any controversial subject, I'm sure we can find studies pro and anti video games. Fact remains that the smartest people I know also like video games.
Books are better than video games, no doubt. But they can co-exist. In the end it's just opinions.
@sprungtil while I don't quite agree with that sentiment, I do wish people would talk about controversial topics elsewhere. The best place, of course, being somewhere other than youtube, a place that people go for entertainment.
No matter the reception, my original point is valid. If you guys would like to think that the many people playing World of Warcraft are just stockpiling knowledge that will allow them to cure cancer, go for it.
Fact remains, the average gamer is obsessive, neglectful, and desperate to justify their addiction. No, I am not curing cancer or aids, but I am a High School teacher, and I am informed enough to know that gaming is NOT a constructive addiction.
@CEShannVfB Gaming is about the only sport that ENCOURAGEs intelligence, not only that. The internet is the main place of information, ofc the more u are there the more u learn, especially about other cultures, languages etc. It causes tolerance, and not racism.
@Etrajbe That is an outrageous claim. If you believe that it doesn't take intelligence to play a sport such as hockey, or soccer, you are mistaken.
It is ironic that you are claiming that gaming makes you more tolerant; yet, here you are making comments like this which are charged with quite a bit of ignorance.
I teach enough kids who are obsessed with video games to know they don't make you "tolerant" and informed. Quite the opposite.
@CEShannVfB Well then you are clueless. And no, look at comments on other videos, alot of people dont care about what they write. gaming is foremost FUN, people do it because its FUN. its also gotten away SOOO SO much crime. but apart from that YES it does cause tolerance, and without a DOUBT does encourage intelligence alot more, not only IN the games, but ur on the only free source of information in the world, the internet. Your ignorant. Quite the opposite.
@Etrajbe That's the spirit. Showcase your point. Start attacking me personally.
Correlation doesn't imply causation. Just because smart people may play video games does not necessarily mean video games make you intelligent.
If you want to be scientific about this, are there certain games that "promote" intelligence and tolerance more than others? Doubt a 13 year old playing Call of Duty is learning to be "tolerant", nor are they necessarily learning to employ logic or reason.
@CEShannVfB Read up on it :) The best encouragement to make the transition from nationalistic societies to a mutlicultural society is thru GAMING and increasing tolerance around other cultures, or the internet as a whole. look up research, it does lower crime, you do come over information more often, generally have more interests in those subjects, and also it makes brainwashed people realise equality, look up research, it lowers crimes and removes foreign prejudice. You are ignorant, yes.
@Etrajbe How about you read the study down by Marny R. Hauge & Douglas A. Gentile.
Perhaps you would like to argue with a doctor on this issue? Researched teens have been shown to be more aggressive, less social, and less accomplished academically. Facts are facts, and Hauge and Gentile have put a great deal of time into it. As the poster of this video said, you can find studies favoring both sides, but, as someone who deals with these kids everyday, you are dead wrong.
@CEShannVfB I deal with those kids everyday too, tbh, its VERY easy to tell who is a gamer and who is not ususally, they problematize, they think for themselves, they ARE themselves. And sure, it has both effects, its down to the person. But ofc of the SPORTS its the one who encourages intelligence the most, look at football players for instance, then look at a "gamer"... enough said.
I think if gamers are actually serious about being good, then the above speech actually applies. Your mentality can apply to people who's passionate in anything other than school like sports. My dad absolutely discourages my aunt from drawing because he thinks it's counterproductive to making a living but she is now an interior designer. As John puts it, who's laughing now?
I'm in Masters league and I can barely scrape top 20, yet I dedicate all my free time to eSports. Will I ever even qualify for GSL, MLG, TSL, or any other tournament of that caliber? Only in my dream. But that's not gonna stop me from doing what I love to do, to the best of my ability. Haters gonna hate.
@strateeg32 All the players over there are sponsored and get accomodation paid and only have to game to support a living. Also these days people make a living off just live streaming videos.
@CEShannVfB a million? rofl no? also gaming does encourage the brain and intelligence, and within that u find all of your "million" more productive things.
@CEShannVfB Gaming is a profession. They specialize at what they do, their tools are their keyboards and mouse. Behind every game you see are players training 12 hours a day. Not only are to required to have great reflexes but mental endurance and physical endurance. If you want to compare it, it is like a professional pianist. I rather have young people play video games than do drugs or sell drugs on the street. There is A LOT more stuff to bash on first besides gaming. Gang violence, bullying.
For every successful video game player that makes money, how many don't? Most video game playing is a waste of time (me being guilty too), so let's not be delusional about it just because some pro tells us it's not.
@LloydChristmas777 It's not about becoming a pro-gamer, John isn't a pro-gamer, it's about putting your passion into something you believe in.
