  • still a beautiful song and video still brings tears to my eyes every time i play it and you wonder what the hell x factor is all about and why does it exist cowell and co could never produce anything as superb as this i mean could you see LITTLE MIX doing this respect again to sting and everybody involved JUST BRILLIANT

  • Which version is this?

  • every person have a life and and a unique chance to decide how to live this life..... why they say the best you live your own life ......you have right to everything good bad mistakes victories love or lonelyness life is not a goal is a gift

  • Never heard a song that says so much about loss, regret and sorrow of a love that never came to full bloom, Words we could say only to ghosts because we couldn't say them while they lived.

  • I've had depression for the longest time. I can't say when it began or what caused it, but one thing I know from it is that I've harbored resentment towards life and my family. My mom for not being supportive, for not allowing me to be independent and my own person for missing out in life. I'm only 20 and I feel I have so much pressure, to be perfect to be things I wouldn't want to be. This song is my refuge. It makes me forgive them, and allow myself to live. This song is a masterpiece.

  • @AnnieBanana978 'an ungrateful child..sharper than a serpents tooth'

  • @cwwiss1 Hmm? I'm afraid I don't follow?

  • @AnnieBanana978 It is. Stick by it. You have a long way to go.

  • Long sentences to say just one thing Life + Love = Happyness

    L + L = H

  • The Soul Cages remains to this day one of the greatest albums ever cut. Why should I cry for you? Because we are human. All of us. Such a simple life...

  • Played this song over and over after Steve Job's death...

  • <3

  • This brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it, for it is the soul's journey. The eternal Cosmic pilgrim, travelling from life to life. We can all identify with this song: we are all venturing through space and time, o'er the Cosmic seas...

  • I love this song. Looooove every second of it. Sometimes I just don't remember how much I need it. ;)

  • Incredible song from one of the greatest albums OF ALL TIME.

  • For as long as I've heard this song, the lines that connect with me more than anything else are the lines: "Dark Angles follow me, over a Godless sea, mountains of endless fog, for all my days remaining'

I couldn’t have stated my life any better than these four lines…….

  • I swear, this song would go great with footage of the international space station

  • to minty 4287 total and utter respect to you for sharing with us all a true beautiful story and i hope you will never forget the part your husband played in such a great song i always play this song and have a good cry to remember my dad thanks once again you seem a lovely person total respect minty thanks a bunch xxx

  • @thewinnster1 Thankyou appreciate your comments. He was and always will be remembered with love and pride as I'm sure your Dad is.

  • a simply beautiful song which sends shivers down my spine nobody better at anything like this than sting cheers for a truly great song

  • This whole album is incredible. I love the nautical/maritime feel to all the songs. Brilliant...as usual.

  • this song got me through some very hard times..I absolutely love this tune....

  • Again, this song reminds me of my grandfather, telling me stories of traveling through the north Atlantic at the turn of last century without any help of modern technology. He was oh a ship ahead of the Titanic, they didn't believe the SOS calls, and went forward. He was nearly twenty at the time, got drunk in Brooklyn, and stayed, figured if the Titanic sunk, how long would he make it on Norse fishing boats? Still, it was part of his youth, and I am sure he embellished the stories.

  • I love this song like 99% of sting songs

  • From my favorite Sting album.

  • 35 people have no soul.

  • @ minty4287. That's a beautiful story and it literally gave me chills. A beautiful story for a beautiful tune. All my best - Karen-

  • the drum fill @ 2:00 is the best I have ever heard. Go MANU!

  • What a nice Birthday gift! really. I got goosebumps

  • Nice Story Minty !!!!

  • I'll never lose hope, never ever

  • This song gives feeling of release - I love it

  • What a song!!!!!! (bow)

  • The most beautiful album ever made. This album from beginning to end is an Epiphany.

  • 2:42-2:45 was totally an ad campaign. :D

but really it's a beautiful and inspirational song that transcends time. :)

  • "Why Should I Cry For You" Under the dog star sail er the Arctic fire Over the seas of silence Hauling on frozen ropes For all my days remaining But would north be true? All colours bleed to red Asleep on the ocean's bed Drifting on empty seas For all my days remaining
  • @mohsinmehraj when i listen 2 this i get a sense of what he felt when he thought he would turn out like his dad....which is not a bad thing if u want that but if thats not what u want, u try really hard not 2 turn out like your parent or parents. true or not?

  • @aries4961

    true...

  • @aries.. Being in that very same situation this song talks to me, today, It rang through my head making me search again for this long lost song for some comfort. It's a bit agonizing going through that as a teen, looking for role models other than my dad or mom just to find out that there were none. This series of unfortunate events & depression led me to find my role model in Jesus Christ, He taught Us peace and chewed out arrogant politicians, and Is Alive now to Return :)

  • @y0maan

In today's society, the media tries to tell you who your role models should be, and then when they make a mistake they're crucified. The thing to remember is we're all human. We're all prone to mistakes, to living in the moment, to being selfish, it's part of being human. Instead of looking to others for how you should live your life, figure out what kind of person you want to be and do the best you can to be that person. Acknowledge your mistakes in life but also use them to learn.

  • @ikill4klondikebars this music is so beautiful..and reminds me of childhood love for sea and ships..the video is very artistry even in black and white

  • I don't know if anyone here watches the show "Deadliest Catch" or not, but if you do, this song should have been their theme song. I mean, word for word for word it could not be more dead on to the show and what those guys do for a living.....

  • @TownieGirl1974

    Love this programme,great shout :)

  • sometimes i saw your face..stars seem to lose their place..why should i...why i should i cry for you...................my father pasta away months before this album came out..

  • makes me proud to be from the north east

  • this is still the best version of this song esp at the end when Sting kicks but on the bass!!!!

  • Truly the ROCKSTAR of the WORLD!!!

  • I love Sting...

  • Стинг Он крут!!!!! романтик!

  • awesome song.

  • ...and always the quality backup musicians

  • the key verse is the one that starts with, ''sometimes I see your face, stars seem to lose their place. why must I think of you?, why must I?, why should I?, why should I cry for you, why would you want me to, WHAT WOULD IT MEAN TO SAY I LOVED YOU IN MY FASHION? to me, it's a song about being so broken hearted that one is driven to endless, mindless toil to help forget, but at the same time being unable to forget a lost love.

  • This was the last thing my late husband worked on (he is the sailor with the beanie hat and the big beard). I've not seen it till now and he passed away in November 1993. I came home from a birthday meal tonight , turned the tv on and Sting was on singing this - I decided to check it out on the internet - first time I've done this - and there he was - what a birthday present

  • @minty4287 Nice Story. Tks for sharing !!!

  • @minty4287 Great Story.

  • @minty4287 I love this song. One of my sons used to have colic as an infant; I remember getting up in the middle of the night singing this song to him to calm him down...it worked and my ex- wife and I could eventually get some sleep.

  • @minty4287; Wow. You've just added a brand-new dimension to this beautiful song and video for me. My most sincere condolences. Amazing synchronicity I'd venture to say!

  • @minty4287 ...If it was me in your place, it would destroy me to watch this video... I mean, I'd be happy, but also really distressed. As it is, I listen to this song sometimes and think of my father, and feel quietly wretched.

  • @minty4287 What a story! Thanks for sharing it.

  • @minty4287 What an incredibly moving story. God bless you. Thank you for sharing your love for your husband, and your honoring of his memory. Reading this blessed me. Can't stop crying. Bless you!

  • i kinde have a feling that this song is also about loving your father ore not. and that is something what i ask myself sometimes: do i love my father. becouse my mom and dad are devors (im 14 years old) and i live whit my mother. and sometimes my father does things, ore exally does things not what a father should do, to me my brother and my sister. and than i think about is he a good father? do i love him?

and that is one of the many reasons i have to cry at this song.

  • Dedicated with great love to all the Women & Girls on this fuckin' planet!!!! May gof he is great bless you all!!!!

  • superb human emotion..sheer poetry in longing......timeless.....thank you so much for your efforts....

  • IN MEMORY OF :Phil Harris Tribute True To The Cornelia Marie

  • @MrJimmyvaughn You mede me open eyes so wide when I read that name, yes a nice song for my deathliest catch, favorite captain.

  • Uwielbiam te piosenke... Jedna z najladniejszych Stinga.

  • Nigdy się nie uwolnię od tej piosenki.

  • wonderfull song *****

  • amazing song , love u sting :D

    and it's true " Why should I cry for you ? "

  • Amazing song!!

  • Beautiful song!! Thank you Sting for being so beautifully inspired!

  • no cry

  • I know one thing fot certain, if sting will have 70 or 80 yrs old I will marry him, and make love to him as if he was a 20 yrs old LOL................damnnnnnnnnnnn

  • Sting is the King!

  • Somethimes when I listen to sting, It gives me feeling that he sings out of tune. Maybe is that his kind of style. But, Does somebody know more about this?

  • i was in the us navy with the seabees just here the words

  • "but would north be true" can anyone tell me what "north" means in this sentence?

  • @Naitta I would take a guess, i could be wrong. but memories are created by us and not always accurate. Sting would have favorite memories of his father, and maybe forget other memories...and the memories change over time.

so it is with the North. the North pole is an accurate measurement on many place on earth except for when you get to the north pole, then true north can't be found, the magnet needle goes haywire.

  • i love this hole album. i have the CD

    :D

  • the song i sang when i found out that my pet hamster had passed away.

  • What is that flute sounding instrument in the beginning?

  • I don't know how many of you reading this may watch the show Deadliest Catch (which I love) but ever since I started watching that show I have always felt THIS SONG should have been their theme song, not "Dead Or Alive" by Bon Jovi. This song is probably one of if not my favorite all time song, and like I said, if you are a fan of Deadliest Catch, doesn't this song fit for the show word for word?To me it's almost like Sting sat down and wrote this song just for Deadliest Catch.....

  • This song is the most beautiful one on a perfect album that is an old comforting friend.

  • This song is haunting, it has in its lines the sorrow of loss and the beauty of discovering a new way of loving...

  • What a beautiful song. It pulls a cover around your shoulders when you feel lost and gives you warmth and strength - if only to finally let the tears fall down. "Why should I cry?" - Because it releases

  • @Migaira Beautiful comment! I agree.

  • exotic

  • This song is about his father. My dad died around the time I had this on cd. It is very special to me.

  • When I heard this live at a show a few years back with my late sister, we both started to cry when the first few notes were played. I think at first we were so surprised that he was even doing it, it being an older song, and not a huge hit like others. Also because it was always a favorite of both of us, so beautiful and haunting. RIP Ellen

  • 1991

  • It sounds like he has hiccups at the end- only joking. I simply love this song!

  • beautiful, amazing, brilliant.....moves me everytime...xoxoxoxox

  • my mom whose is a dancer made a choreographie with this for my dead grandfather

  • Beautiful lyrics....I still find this album quite haunting

  • @piabarker: Very, very true and a brilliant explanation. "How we humans hurt eachother, because of our past hurts"... You couldn't have said it better, right on the mark! This song brings me back to a very black period in my life, after breaking up with the love of my life. I played it over and over again.. My past still hurts...

  • Soul cages was released in "Q sound" - a system that made the sound come from "outside" the speakers. I never saw this system used on any other album and yet it gave Soul Cages an extra dimension.

  • to ronny of L.S. SOLLAND in bode norway.... buddy, this song for both of us...thank you for searching and reaching for me...i say, we have the same spirit, we love the sea, and we work on ship.... stay safe always, and God bless.

  • Great!!!!!! I love STING!!!!

  • ova za EMA koja nikogas nema da ja zaboravam ...NIKOGAS

  • This is from the Soul Cages album. Sting wrote the album as a way to deal with the grief and loss from the death of his Father.

  • why should i cry for you? after all ur nothing but ....i hate you now!

  • for half the the song I'm waiting for Annie Lennox to jump into the song and sing the chorus to 'No More I Love Yous' - not a bad thing

  • Wonderful to read these comments. The song can be intepreted in many ways. For me it was moving to Canada. It still moves me.

  • One of the best Sting songs ever. I've loved it ever since I first heard it. It's truly brilliant.

  • I just saw Sting live and he said that this song is about his father and dealing with his father's passing.

  • I'm not a big ballad fan - but this one makes me teary. Must be all those minor changes...

  • brilliantly brilliant

  • the best!!

  • yeah, true...i am not stupid...so ...WHY SHOULD I CRY FOR YOU?.

  • My favourite song

  • I recently attended one of Stings's concerts and before he sang this song he said that every single one of his father's relatives was a fisherman. His father was the only one to break tradition and be a milkman. He said that his father encouraged him not to be a fisherman and to go out and explore life. He said he wrote this song in his father's memory.

  • @shutupnumnuts he mentioned that in his concert in Vienna 2 days ago. He seemed to love his father

  • @shutupnumnuts

Exactly. I also attended the concert, and that's exactly what he said.

Wasn't the way he sang the song just mindblowing?

  • @shutupnumnuts

yeah,true...I was at his concert three days ago,and he said the same thing....I truly adore sting, cause you can see/hear honesty in his voice,music,lyrics....great man

  • @tatjana1707

slazem se , i nama je to rekao na koncertu :)

  • @Nutellagirl214

haha :) onda smo ga obe cule tada :)

  • love shall be the first of our motors...

  • I saw him live the other night, he said he wrote this for his dad

  • @TheIllMadeKnight yep me too. Were you at Irvine?

  • @shutupnumnuts no, Hollywood

  • why should i cry for you? i kept asking that but still i found myself crying bcoz of you...i know someday ill get over you...

  • the beautiful song for me ...

  • wooooww q bonita esta cancion

  • this sog its very very sad, i remeber when i lost my love for first time, this song has playin in the radio....

  • How do I find mp3iffy to download this song? I was told to google mp3iffy.

  • @ZanderPhillips151 Download it on itunes of amazon mp3 instead of promoting your site.

  • good song, shitty sound quality! Totally kills it!

  • i was thinking, this one tells about wasting much time and useless loving someone without being loved back...now i know i was wrong...

  • My...favorite song...always makes me cry singing it.

  • I sing this to crying infants when they keep me up at 1 am or so...

  • WOW .i had forgoten about how this is magnificent . thanks fro portugal

  • :((

  • It is about a loss, not a romantic one but the sudden loss of his parents, this album was dedicated to the memory of his dad, recently dead then.

  • Amazing song with a lot of atmosphere! The music vid matches exactly with the images I had in mind.

  • I have always felt that it was about a person's love wounding them deeply, maybe infidelity. And being torn between moving on and staying. And the wounds are still fresh and your love for the other is still fresh, despite the hurt. It's about the confusion of not yet accepting the loss of the other because your love was so deep that you didn't see it coming and everything felt so right that you didn't know that you love could hurt you that way.

  • @ejflesher well said.

  • "Why Should I Cry For You"

Especially after all the pain and, disappointment.:(

    )%/!@/@))!

  • This song is about the death of his father.

  • This is such a beautiful song and great black and white video. I love all the black and with videos. It really adds so much more drama to it and sets a mood.

  • ..... symbolized the song of my life, when ever i was underguarding vessel at the middle of pacific ocean, i do not know what to expect, do i will see my love ones again or do my soul have to be drown in the middle of the sea...COURAGE, LOVE and FAITH...the true meaning of this song...God bless.

  • "All colours bleed to RED..."

I don't if it's sting's best, but it's my favorite one... Excellent post, myth.

  • aaa

  • In Island of Souls, Billy's father is killed in an accident. All This Time: Billy wants to bury his father at sea. Why Should I Cry For You: an adult Billy who went to sea on one of the ships his father helped build is still haunted by his father's death. The Wild Wild Sea: Billy drowns and is captured by the Fisherman(devil). The Soul Cages: Billy wins a drinking contest against the Fisherman and frees his father's soul. Together, they travel to the Island of Souls (Heaven).

  • That\s really interesting, thanks for posting that. Must look into it. Love this song.

  • Like most of the material on The Soul Cages album, this song is about Sting coming to terms with the death of his father. I always thought The Soul Cages was Sting's best work and it is one of the best as well as last great concept Albums. BTW, Sting's dad was a milkman, not a sailor. It's all metaphor.

  • @howen77 I agree, "The Soul Cages" was Sting's best work, and this is my favourite song of his. All this sadness and beauty jus takes over me everytime...

  • @howen77

His father was actually a ship builder, not a milk man (hence why the concept album contains instrumental nods to old seafarer dirges and sea-related lyrics).

  • @AddySophie Sting's dad was an engineer, and he may have worked on ships at some point, but his primary income and career was as a milkman. His name was Ernest Sumner. No matter though. I just enjoy the song and the album.

  • @howen77

I agree. The metaphor is actually about Sting's father wanting Sting to be a sailor and seeing the world. I heard Sting himself say that during a Symphonicity Tour concert. He also said that he has indeed once been on a ship (as a musician), and he [quote] "fucking hated it" [quote]. Of course, this joke was an intro to the song, therefor not being disrespectful.

Hence the song video as it is.

Makes me cry almost every time I hear it.

  • @Stingloveress

He's actually a member of the Queens Navy, inactive of course; but he did serve, reached corporal (? )(or commander).

  • @cindylinden

    Seriously? I didn't know that. :)

    Thanks!

  • @howen77 When he was a child, his father took him to the seaside and told him he would have liked him to be a sailor when he grew up. Back then Sting didn't understand what it meant, but now he knows that his father wanted him to have fun. - Sting told us that story on the concert few weeks ago.

  • @howen77 interestingly enough, he rarely talks about it and let that album slip into the past. i agree, a very complete work, second only to ten summoners tales.

  • Hi pcholody, this video belongs to my favourite also.Sting is extraordinary artist.

    POZDRAWIAM Cie - Czech StingMania.

  • this song internalized in me whist I was hiking the blue ridge mountains for a few weeks. I thought about someone i loved the entire time. I think this song is about being haunted by love

  • oh it does sound like "i'll be over you"

  • @Niddm2 You see, but it's as if we have sinned. I guess our comments will soon disappear thanks to Sting fundamentalists. I love the album The Soul Cages so much. "All this Time" is one of the best songs ever created, perhaps the best ever. I took the trouble to correct the lyrics of "Island of Souls" and of "All this Time" at Lyricsmode (they say corrected by DawnTreader, my other nickname), and I love "Why should I cry for You?", but I'm treated like a Sting hater. Whatever...

  • @Niddm2 really......

  • As much as I admire Sting's work, I think he borrowed the verses of this song from Toto: "I'll Be Over You". Please check out that song and let me know what you think. Thanks in advance...

  • This song is actually about His Father.. who abandoned him and went to sea...

poignant , sad, a boy who can not understand... heartache for a lifetime

  • @windstruckladyc If you did not know that (as I bet most don't) you can MOST DEFINITELY take this as a love song.

  • @windstruckladyc my father abandoned me too.and never gave a rats ass...but i wouldnt cry for him...

other than that this is a Sting classic

  • So beautiful and melancholy. Sting's best song!!
