I mean, like have it either take place after the family watches the found footage and some of the family/friends go looking for them and strange things happen. Or have it like in present day where on the anniversary of their 'disappearance' a group goes looking for them and they disappear.

If you ask me this is how you make a terrifying monster or antagonist, the less you see it the more paranoid you get. even the intensity begins to build until the final reveal. games like amnesia and penumbra do this. to an extend even silent hill. hell lovecraft did it and it scared the hell of a lot of people.
