@MauricioCaran never in senna's career he had the worst car..he always got one of the best cars on the grid!!and in 1991 mclaren was equal if not better than williams, which had huge reliability problems and made mansell miss the first 3 races of the season plus many other retirements along the season...
don't get me wrong senna is one of the greatest natural talents in the history of f1...but also is mansell!!!and he won that battle with pure driving skill and racing instinct.
@jjhhkkful Actually the Toleman was bad. The Lotus was ok, kinda like an AMG mercedes of today. Capable of third and fourth Driver's and Constructor's Championship finishes but nothing more. He made it sing. Then Mclaren 88 89 90 and 91 was a BOMB, but arguably so was Williams by 1990, more so by 1991. in 1992 and 1993 Senna had a car that was not powerful enough and moreover NOT reliable , whereas the Williams really took off in those two years (1993 especially).
@jjhhkkful (continued) 1994 Senna finally was back into a "seemingly" good car, but the ban of electronic aids and the such was a bad thing for Williams, since the car itself was made with driving aids in mind and it took them almost ALL of the 1994 season to tune it up to perfection (leading to 96 and 97 DC for Hill and Villeneuve, and CC in 94 and 95), too bad poor Ayrton was not there to witness the fruits of his labour.
Its a misunderstanding that Ayrton was ALWAYS in the best car
And Senna became the champion that year 91, even with a inferior car without eletronics.... In 92 starts the eletronic war, I saw Senna interview in his movie, he was worried because the eletronic was not good to the sport the cars starts to take over the drivers. And thats exactly what happend F1 was starting to lose the spirit of a trully cars race
@MCChase Hey kid, do not say this bunch of shit ... will not talk numbers. Do you think Senna's talent can be measured in numbers?? You know nothing about racing. By the way, do you know what Prost madeto Senna at Suzuka in 1989??
he saw that Senna would overtake him and caused the accident, because if the both leave the race, he would be champion.
@MCChase you think Senna's death is the reason he is so popular? Alot of drivers have died in the past, and alot keep dying in other racing sports and none have had such an impact. If you want to talk about Prost and Mansell being just as Skillful as Senna you are wrong. Senna didn't start off in a good ride like Mclaren, and still managed to win races and beat world champions. Look up senna Monaco 88 and Senna Donnington, also known as greatest lap and Senna Monaco 84.
@MCChase - No, no, no. I could ask, what do you know? You were what..... 6 when Senna died*. You were not there to see Senna's races. You only see the highlights in clips like this, I saw every race from before you were born until his death in '94.
*providing the age in your YT profile is correct.
I'm not being hostile..... don't call me a dick..... It's a valid argument.
I don't think it's fair to base an entire opinion of who is the better drver on 2 overtakes.
Also, Vettel's career is still only a few seasons old and, as brilliant as he has been since starting in F1, I think it's only right to compare the 2 careers in 5 or 6 years when we have seen Vettel at his peak. However, the way he is going at the moment, he is on course to earn himself a reputation as 1 of the all time greats.
@chrismarkbicknell Not really considering he still isn't considered as good as alonso or hamilton despite being a 2x WC. His car is a gimmick and he has not proved his racing abilities apart from 1 race in the wet in 08.
@lemadera Are you serious??? NO politics? In the late 80s early 90s (the era your talking about) formula one was at its most political. Jean-Marie Balestre and Senna constantly clashed over Balestre being biased towards Prost. Read Senna's book it explains a lot about just how political F1 was at the time
@edd55r Ur right it was at the most political era in F1. I don't know what I was thinking, maybe when they're we're driving it was pure skill or something like that...
Altough one thing is for sure, F1 nowadays is worthless, compared to those times...
Ayrton Senna & Nigel Mansell, 2 legends of F1. Both Hall of famers but though Nigel Mansell was great, to me Senna was the best of all time. Only matched recently by Michael Schummacher, another great champion, the best of the best!
@RealAdvert I dont quite agree, Schumacher is a great driver dont get me wrong, but he is a tactician who wins mostly by knowing all the little rules and regulations or showing behavior unfit to a sportman. People love to point out Senna wasnt a sweetheart who could be ruthless aswell, true he was hungry and worked his ass off for it, Senna to me is always the prime example of how old F1 drivers used to be, riding on the edge and sometimes slightly beyond it with the old 1500 hp beasts.
@motorhead1995able before the plank, the titanium skidblock would hit the ground. what a shame we don't see any longer. people used to call it a "shower of sparks" coming out the back of the car.
Totally agree. Look at 0:07 second. Nigel is looking Ayrton and his car. He "learns" what he can do. Ayrton knows exactly what is happening and he doesn't need to do violent or smooth correction at all. His helmet, his eye and his brain doesn't follow Nigel'attack but he leaves the space because he's already thinking how to repass Nigel.
@ricklaus dont want to sound harsh, but I think a lot if people see it that way because he died. Yes he was superb, but so was prost, and mansell. same as hendrix, he was considered a good guitarist, after he died he was suddenly a legend, im not saying either senna or hendrix werent brilliant, but dying young and still being at the top, people seem to remember you differently.
Masnsell is my favourite driver of that era, such unique driving style.
Brilliant days of Forumla one, sure Mansell won because he was in the best car but that has always been the case in the modern era. Mansell was a great F1 driver, and definately underrated, probably being British and wearing an unfashionable tash didn't help his cause :)
I would say Lewis is probably the driver who currently fits the Mansell mould and would probably have relished racing the post-turbo cars of the late 80's and early 90's.If only he could break the corperate chains, form an actual opinion and develop a personality.
You're fucking bastard... Senna IS the master... although I think you have no brain, I should explain you something: Senna was 3-times World Champion while Mansell was only 1... Mansell was great too, but Senna was one step ahead everyone else...
@AlemaoVP WRONG. Senna hit Prost off the track at Japan like Schumacher did in Jerez 1997 so one title was stolen and doesn't count. Prost was the 5-time champion way before Schumacher.
How about Prost hitting Senna in 1989!? Same thing... in your way of thinking, '89 champion should not be Prost.. anyway, both were great drivers and I miss those days... that's all
You're probably american, so I will not even waste my time reading any piece of shit that you're writing.. you're all fucking idiots... why don't you go McDonald's on the corner and get some Big Mac to stuff your fucking jelly belly and watch some football that is played with the hands?!
think it was this overtake that senna called Nigel crazy... Senna always said he let the other driver decide if they crash and wont give up a place ..... he swallowed his words here.. great times for F1 we need this excitment in F1 to return... happy memories and great battles Good post.
A great pass. I think it is Nigel's best overtake!!! I loved Senna as well. He had great talent(particularly in the wet, although Nigel and Keke Rosberg were not bad in wet races). Check out Nigel's other great passes(Silverstone 1987, Hungary 1989, Mexico 1990).
For me, this has always been one of the most iconic moments of F1. The 2 finest drivers of that era without question. I still believe Mansell was and is hugely underrated by many, they say he only won in 92 because of the car, but boy did he earn the right to have that car, in the 80s he was spectacular but never had the luck.
You are absolutely right. Wouldn't it be fantastic to have a couple of drivers like him now in F1. Could you imagine 20 drivers like him! What would happen then. Great comments.
@stewux I hate when people say, "[X racer] only won because of the car". Well the car is a good chunk of the reason why racer's win. Not even the best drivers could do anything with the worst cars. Look at Perry McCarthy. Also, just because someone has a good car doesn't mean they'll do good if they have no talent. Mansell is just very talented and had the right car in 92.
they were the 2 drivers i most enjoyed growing up..I have a huge respect for Nigel and what he had to undergo to get to F1 and i have a huge respect / admiration for Senna..Two of the great of all time

Nigel Mansell was underated for his whole career. With little natural talent and lots of aquired talent, he was equall to the greats of his time on his day. It is a shame he is remembered more for his whingeing than his great drives
dextersno1fan I would have to agree with you on that. So many bitter Senna fans on youtube. Any type of constructive criticism about Senna and they cannot accept it. The name - Malamoozoo especially, is a prime example on here.
Why use "Americanisms" to express yourself? Anyway, Iam actually a bigger Mansell fan than Senna (I was under the podium when Mansell picked up his world championship....you were in nappies right?) Its common knowledge Nigel is a racer not a natural driver so get over it (and get a dictionary while your at it and learn some decent language not swear words). BTW your better suited to bikes not cars as your butt ugly.
agreed look at them all disagreeing with us coz were mansell fans
i think ayrton gets to much credit coz hes dead but he is a fantastic driver no doubt bout it but mansell was just as gd at time but ayrton is the better driver soz nigel
i think in that specific case, it was goodyears fault because Mansell was going very slow in that race, because he just needed third place (in which he was) to win the championship
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
to V6NSX...YOU WHAT???????? how the fuck do you win shit loads of races, two titles cross-continent and have no natural talent? Like to see you do it. Jeez what a dumbass thing to say, just cos u like Senna. I wouldn't say Prost was better than Senna cos I like Mansell. Childish.

I think that Mansell was the only driver to have the balls and talent to challenge the great Senna, Mansell was a giant of a driver and was way to unlucky, he deserved alot more, at least 2 more world championships.
WTF??? Where on earth did I say that Mansell was not a good and deserving World Champion? Mansell rates very high in my personal driver's lineup, he was a giant of a driver, I don't understand what you mean ASgod. Mansell was one o f the best racers ever , just like Hamilton, they are both racers.Great to watch.i hope Button get's the championship.
indio77777 2 years ago
For me, this has always been one of the most iconic moments of F1. The 2 finest drivers of that era without question. I still believe Mansell was and is hugely underrated by many, they say he only won in 92 because of the car, but boy did he earn the right to have that car, in the 80s he was spectacular but never had the luck.
stewux 2 years ago 19
You are absolutely right. Wouldn't it be fantastic to have a couple of drivers like him now in F1. Could you imagine 20 drivers like him! What would happen then. Great comments.
alzapiedi 2 years ago
@stewux,Senna once said that Mansell was the only driver that is visible at the same time in the left and right rearview mirror.
norikimi41 1 year ago
@stewux I hate when people say, "[X racer] only won because of the car". Well the car is a good chunk of the reason why racer's win. Not even the best drivers could do anything with the worst cars. Look at Perry McCarthy. Also, just because someone has a good car doesn't mean they'll do good if they have no talent. Mansell is just very talented and had the right car in 92.

No man, you're wrong, that was in 1991's Spanish Gran Prix, Circuit de Catalunya...
In 1989 Mansell runs for Ferrari.

Nigel Mansell was underated for his whole career. With little natural talent and lots of aquired talent, he was equall to the greats of his time on his day. It is a shame he is remembered more for his whingeing than his great drives

Mansell had appalling luck - i'm sure that he could have won a couple of more championships otherwise. Very underrated champion - 'Il Leone!' :)

dextersno1fan I would have to agree with you on that. So many bitter Senna fans on youtube. Any type of constructive criticism about Senna and they cannot accept it. The name - Malamoozoo especially, is a prime example on here.

Partysover is correct. It happened in Barcelona (Montmeló circuit) 1991.

I think mansell lost his chance in 1986 when he blew a tyre in Adelaide(Nigel Mansell Blowout)
C906070 3 years ago
no shit but his fault or goodyears? same today Hamilton is a spectacular driver but hard on the tyres..
noobtube82 3 years ago
i think in that specific case, it was goodyears fault because Mansell was going very slow in that race, because he just needed third place (in which he was) to win the championship
theultimateforce 3 years ago
In that case it was Goodyears

Mansell was not a natural talent like Senna but he was a great charger with balls.

to V6NSX...YOU WHAT???????? how the fuck do you win shit loads of races, two titles cross-continent and have no natural talent? Like to see you do it. Jeez what a dumbass thing to say, just cos u like Senna. I wouldn't say Prost was better than Senna cos I like Mansell. Childish.

C'mon guys, Mansell got the balls, Senna didn't. That's why he was the "Overtaker".
I was there to see him win live, as my first race in F1 live, and it was FAAAAAAAAAAANTASTIC !!! =)
Thanks for the sruff

Senna didn't have balls .LOLOL ,OMG wat a statement. Are u something like 2 years old.
Senna had more balls than all the F1 drivers balls combined.Which planet do u live in.jezz man.
DOOOMKULTUS 4 years ago 2
completely wrong.
red5isalive 4 years ago
I think that Mansell was the only driver to have the balls and talent to challenge the great Senna, Mansell was a giant of a driver and was way to unlucky, he deserved alot more, at least 2 more world championships.

Mansell rates very high in my personal driver's lineup, he was a giant of a driver, I don't understand what you mean ASgod.
