in Rolling Stone, April 17, 2008, he added: "It represents a certain kind of person and a certain kind of love. This particular girl can't see, so material and shallow things just aren't of any concern to her. It's about how she really feels about me, without judging me. That unconditional love teaches me how to love her despite her disability. Of course, we're all disabled in one way or another."
i can see the possibility of it being about weed but i think it's a stretch. i always wanted it to be a song about unconditional love so i researched it ...Vocalist Cee-Lo (from The Guardian newspaper March 22, 2008) "Blind Mary is anyone who can love unconditionally and that's a rare quality."
I never once considered this song to be about marijuana until this video. Thanks for raping my innocence. Either way, it doesn't rock my original view. Just because he's singing about a girl named Mary doesn't always mean marijuana. I think he's singing about a blind girl he loves that loves him for his soul.
ah youtube comments, truly it is the world's greatest repository of retardation, self-righteous crusaders, opinions no one cares about, and general nig-noggery
All you potheads stop trying to act smart!! Isnt a song about someone loving a person better than all those songs out there about pot? Just because a song isn't about vegetation doesn't make it stupid... Just sayin...
I believe this song is more about finding someone that loves you for who you are, simply because a song that references weed is generic, shallow, and appeals to a pretty lowlife demographic that believes that anyone that isn't a burnout is a straight-edge pussy. I'm sorry, but I like life being about living, not vegging out and basically depending on mind-altering substances to make my life more interesting.
@SkellionPowalskiz But aren't you demeaning their opinion. Saying that those who believe the song is about weed only appeals to a lowlife demographic? It's only fair to let people have their own interpretations about a song.
@neosoontoretro I might be, but then again, I've yet to come across a pot head that at tries to defend weed at any point in a conversation. I don't think people should be arrested simply for possession, or even use, but that doesn't mean I like the idea of smoking in the first place. As far as I'm concerned, it's giving into a weakness. Living "clean" means you don't need substances to have an interesting life. Not saying it wouldn't be interesting to try it out once, but still.
@SkellionPowalskiz Marijuana is still controversial and as long they're not hurting themselves or anyone else I don't think its fair to refer to them as low-lives. To call someone a low life just because they live a life style that you don't embrace seems self-righteous and judgemental in my opinion. If you eat fatty foods or drink sodas even if only on certain occasions then you're also giving into weakness.
@neosoontoretro I don't look down on anyone save the people that can't present themselves in public in a healthy manner. Most who use drugs often can't, and I'm speaking from experience. They're usually judgmental themselves, and extremely ignorant and hostile. Those are the only users I've ever encountered, I'm sure there are others that are completely different, but until I meet them, the stigma will always be there.
If you're so bothered by my opinions, I'm sorry, but that's not my problem.
@SkellionPowalskiz I think you're confusing those who use marjuiana with drug addicts. Someone isn't a drug addict just because they occasionally use marjuiana. You're making hasty generalization just because of a few negative experiences. Why do you actually have to meant one in order for that stigma not be true. To me that sounds like an appeal to ignorance. Like said before if you eat fatty foods and drink soda occasionally you're also giving into weakness.
@SkellionPowalskiz That doesn't make any sense. If you feel that everyone's a hypocrite then why openly criticize them if you're guilty of the same thing. Sorry, if you took offense to my comment I meant no harm.
@SkellionPowalskiz Yes but that it still doesn't change the fact you're being hypocritical and my comment was not irrelevant. You're saying that people who use marijuiana are giving into weakness if that is the case then if you eat fatty foods sometimes you're also giving into weakness. That was my point.
@neosoontoretro And my point is, I don't care. Marijuana is a mind-altering drug, mainly used for recreational purposes, food is a substance that you pretty much need to survive. Your point is pretty damn thin. At any rate, I'm going to bed.
@SkellionPowalskiz Uh? You don't need fatty foods to survive. In fact food that is high in fact can also be mind altering high. That is my point which is not "pretty damn thin."
@neosoontoretro The only time I've heard of anything even resembling a "high" coming from foods, would be when people are addicted to sugar levels in McDonald's. That may be true, but really, I'm just about tired of this argument anyway, really, if you want to win the damn much, then fine, I lose, now quit dragging me back into this. There's always a point in an argument when it's just not interesting anymore, and this is it for me.
@neosoontoretro If it will make you feel any better and stop you from making comments back at me, then fine, I'm a hypocritical bigoted asshole. And what's more, I just don't give a shit. It may sound immature, but hey, there's obviously not a damn thing either of us can do about it, since we've spent maybe an entire hour or two trying to change each others' minds. I've dropped it, I really would wish you did the same so we can just stop this and go on watching Youtube.
@neosoontoretro Oh, so that's how it's going to be? You're going to get the last word? No you're not. Fuck it, I can keep this going for a whole week if I have to then.
@neosoontoretro Yeah, but you're the one that started this mess in the first place. If you were the big man that you're pretending to be right now, you would have merely ignored my opinion in the first place, but instead you felt the need to try and contest it. If you weren't being so high and mighty this never would have happened. It would have been much better if you just stated your opinion without trying to make me feel bad about having one of my own.
@neosoontoretro Also, it wasn't that your comment offended me, it was that it was just painfully irrelevant. Everyone is a hypocrite in some way, but if it's either a small issue, or one that is so separate that there is absolutely no connection to a different issue, then there is no reason in even bringing it up, save to insult me.
Really is amazing how many people can hear "Mary" and immediately link it to weed. Ignorance is wonderful, lol. Cee Lo states many times he's sworn off weed. And if you can actually understand and decipher simple themes, you'd realize the song has nothing to do with drugs. He rarely uses metaphor in this. Simply a song about "Mary" being a blind woman who loves him for him. Rather than a physical aspect.
@XyleXydrate Major fail, dude. This may not necessarily be about weed, but to take it literally is fucking retarded. Just because he's sworn off weed doesn't mean he's sworn off writing songs about it. And what do you mean he rarely uses metaphors? Have you ever heard his music before? The man is a metaphor machine. The problem is that you're not smart enough to recognize them, apparently.
@joeromel1 Let me rephrase something then...He uses metaphors, yes, but in this one, there really isn't many to see. I was looking for a specific interview that was on here before where he actually takes a second to talk about this song. I was only referring to what I believe the song was initially about and how it's rather sad that people really do dull it down a bit to weed. Never said that they aren't entitled to their opinion.
@joeromel1 I'll even contradict previous statements now to say that I can see how the song can be taken out as talking about weed. Came to realize I sounded not only arrogant but ignorant in my first post on here. No excuse for that (lol). I see what you mean by him swearing off weed. Doesn't entail that he wouldn't write about it. Guess what i initially meant was that the song can have a dual-meaning and I didn't see many people that seen the other side of it. Was rather arrogant about it, tho
Idk, why do you guys think that it's not about pot? It reminds me of my relationship with the wonderful herb. So fuck ya ya know? Quit thinking songs are one dimensional.
@ide1466 Yeah, 'cause thinking a song is about a relationship based on inner apearance instead of just plain looks is totally one dimensional. No, we should all think it's about drugs, this makes it so much more meaningful... goddamn hipster.
@wesside0yes your correct..he was a baddy backadayz, he aint exactly gorj & I think he is pouring his heart out.. gotta admit I like his face but its just his size..but I could look beyond that if he was a sweet as he seems...lol I do love him & his music lol ;P
@wesside0yes Can't it be both? If not can't people just have different interpretations of a certain song. And what does this have to with being a hipster?
@neosoontoretro Ofcourse a song with a deep meaning will always show multiple interpretations. I just showed my opinion to a person who believes that my thinking and that of others is one dimensional and his isn't in a way that he could understand; blunt and direct. You're always welcome to think and say what you want with respect, and for so you're opinion will be respected back. Ow and I called him a hipster because he probably believes it's about weed just to be in opposite of everybody else.
@wesside0yes How do you know that he doesn't generally believe that it about weed? He gave his opinion about the song yet you didn't seem to respect his opinion. What he meant was the song has mulitple interpretations, which is why he said it wasn't one dimensional. So if you both agree that the song has mulitple viewpoints then why criticize him for not having the same interpretation as most people. That seem very conflicting in my opinion.
@neosoontoretro If it truely was his general believe he had a funny way of showing. But I'm 99% it isn't, I should know. Also, he did not just state his own opinion, he stated it while demeaning those who did not share it. This is the exact opposite of a respectable opinion and as such, should not pertain any respect for it. He also didn't state the song was one dimensional if not being about weed, he said our thoughtproces was one domensional for not believing his interpretation.
@wesside0yes He was saying that it was one dimensional because you were overly certain that it wasn't about weed To me he was actually defending his opinion at opposed to demeaning your opinion. Again how are you 99% certain that his opinion is not general? Is it because his opinion is not the majority opinion?
Except the song is pretty clearly about marijuana...the whole point is he's referencing the escapism. It's good to be able to interpret a piece of art in different ways, but this particular piece really only has one meaning
To Me it is obviously about more than one thing, as is most all of Gnarls Barkeley. It obviously is about herb and it plays off a story of inner and outer beauty. When someone smokes, its hard to deny what is going on inside...
To Me it is obviously about more than one thing, as is most all of Gnarls Barkeley. It obviously is about herb and it plays off a story of inner and outer beauty. When someone smokes, its hard to deny what is going on inside...
@wesside0yes IMO Its not just looking past appearance, but someone who looks far deeper into what kind of person your are. I, for example, am a convicted felon/schizophrenic but what people dont get is that Im loyal and I would gladly lay my life down for those I not only love but trust. But everybody judges me based on my past and how I approach those who mean to harm me and my loved ones. I know Im ranting but this song really means alot to me.
@harveyandjosie A hipster is just some general insult like he uses it here. It has an actual meaning. Someone who thinks a song about drugs is not the definition of a hipster.
Ridiculous that no one can use simple terms anymore without people thinkin' it's about "weed" or some shit like that. Not only did Cee Lo explain it himself...But if you just listen to the damn song, you can tell it isn't shit to do with weed.
there are so many basic similarities to weed cant help this is such a relaxing song for ME and I can only speak for me its always gonna be about Mrs Jane
Its not about weed, its about a blind girl named Mary, that supposedly is a lover that looks past your bad side. Kind of like she sort of can't say anything about it.... Shes blind after all....
@sweetlife7771 Mary is a common name for weed where im from but I never thought this song was a referrance to it... I actually still dont. I like how EwilG stated what the song is truly about. Thats how i view it also.
You've really never heard of weed referred to as Mary Jane? That's one of the most common terms in the history of the drug. "Mary" is probably just shorthand for that.
@sweetlife7771 mary jane in spanish is mari juana = marijuana...thats why lots of "mary" are reffered to weed..but i dont know if that songs talks about weed anyway
@TheRedaprince this song so aint about weed, cee lo dnt even smoke weed cos he gets panic attacks n shit.... which sucks if i got that everytime i hit a zoot i wud b fuckin pissed
This song is not about weed, people. Drugs are bad, mmmmmkay.

@ide1466 Yeah, 'cause thinking a song is about a relationship based on inner apearance instead of just plain looks is totally one dimensional. No, we should all think it's about drugs, this makes it so much more meaningful... goddamn hipster.
wesside0yes 11 months ago 49
@wesside0yes your correct..he was a baddy backadayz, he aint exactly gorj & I think he is pouring his heart out.. gotta admit I like his face but its just his size..but I could look beyond that if he was a sweet as he seems...lol I do love him & his music lol ;P
Peace
Iseeksdatruth 9 months ago
@wesside0yes Can't it be both? If not can't people just have different interpretations of a certain song. And what does this have to with being a hipster?
neosoontoretro 9 months ago
@neosoontoretro Ofcourse a song with a deep meaning will always show multiple interpretations. I just showed my opinion to a person who believes that my thinking and that of others is one dimensional and his isn't in a way that he could understand; blunt and direct. You're always welcome to think and say what you want with respect, and for so you're opinion will be respected back. Ow and I called him a hipster because he probably believes it's about weed just to be in opposite of everybody else.
wesside0yes 8 months ago
@wesside0yes How do you know that he doesn't generally believe that it about weed? He gave his opinion about the song yet you didn't seem to respect his opinion. What he meant was the song has mulitple interpretations, which is why he said it wasn't one dimensional. So if you both agree that the song has mulitple viewpoints then why criticize him for not having the same interpretation as most people. That seem very conflicting in my opinion.
neosoontoretro 8 months ago
@neosoontoretro If it truely was his general believe he had a funny way of showing. But I'm 99% it isn't, I should know. Also, he did not just state his own opinion, he stated it while demeaning those who did not share it. This is the exact opposite of a respectable opinion and as such, should not pertain any respect for it. He also didn't state the song was one dimensional if not being about weed, he said our thoughtproces was one domensional for not believing his interpretation.
wesside0yes 8 months ago
@wesside0yes He was saying that it was one dimensional because you were overly certain that it wasn't about weed To me he was actually defending his opinion at opposed to demeaning your opinion. Again how are you 99% certain that his opinion is not general? Is it because his opinion is not the majority opinion?

@wesside0yes I don't think he wanted you to agree just it is possible that the song could be a reference to weed.
neosoontoretro 8 months ago
@wesside0yes
Except the song is pretty clearly about marijuana...the whole point is he's referencing the escapism. It's good to be able to interpret a piece of art in different ways, but this particular piece really only has one meaning
DominoGray 8 months ago
@DominoGray
To Me it is obviously about more than one thing, as is most all of Gnarls Barkeley. It obviously is about herb and it plays off a story of inner and outer beauty. When someone smokes, its hard to deny what is going on inside...

@wesside0yes I think you'll actually find this is very much about drugs..
Weakness1 7 months ago
@wesside0yes IMO Its not just looking past appearance, but someone who looks far deeper into what kind of person your are. I, for example, am a convicted felon/schizophrenic but what people dont get is that Im loyal and I would gladly lay my life down for those I not only love but trust. But everybody judges me based on my past and how I approach those who mean to harm me and my loved ones. I know Im ranting but this song really means alot to me.

@wesside0yes Yeah, you clearly don't know what the word "hipster" means.

@harveyandjosie A hipster is just some general insult like he uses it here. It has an actual meaning. Someone who thinks a song about drugs is not the definition of a hipster.
Dexide10 5 months ago
@Dexide10 *isn't
Dexide10 5 months ago
Ridiculous that no one can use simple terms anymore without people thinkin' it's about "weed" or some shit like that. Not only did Cee Lo explain it himself...But if you just listen to the damn song, you can tell it isn't shit to do with weed.
