I work in television. A possible answer is Viacom does not want Gen Y to start preferring these shows to cheaper, easier to crank out, lower-quality shows its many subsidiaries are making. YOUR and OUR prefering these shows is not a problem. If the millions in Generation Y start to prefer them, however, Viacom = problem, because they don't produce these kinds of shows today and no longer remember how to.

Actually that opening didn't come along until season three (that was the first one, where the boys were seen in the 1968 Belvedere as they were seen in the first two seasons). The one you're talking about is season four; that's the one where they are running out of the station as the dispatcher gives the call and that big block police package opens up.
I'm in my 40's and it was the primary reason I became a cop. The show was and is true to life. Second runner up would be Wambaugh's Police Story. Thanks for posting:)
