The lyrics, music and performance of this song, prove that he is the Boss. Creating silence like that equals the start of Thunder Road in Barca in 2002.
Always brilliant, Bruce, moving us with your plenty of talent compositions and your thrilling and passionate interpretations. You have already given us many pieces of yourself... but we're still anxious for more... keep on writing, Bruce... keep on playing... And, please, Bruce...Keep on rockin' like that!!!
Please: Is there anyone who can report me if some officer has been sentenced for that Tragedy? Im sorry, but I know Amadou Diallo thanks to Bruce (He doesnt put up with the name of boss). I love USA cuz its the most important democracy all over the world and if someone has got it wrong the law should take its course. Shouldnt it? How did the story end? If it had a sequel. Thanks..
4 Officers names draged through the mud for a tragic mistake made bc of a hostil enviroment. 4 Officers murdered bc they wore badges Lakewood WA. Humm...
Personally, I don't think the tune is anything to recommend, but because the lyrics are honest, relevant and paint a clear picture of how the USA is treated, you can't help but feel Springsteen is more of a prophet than a songwriter. That's just my opinion.
Yes, it was tragic, and I think it was good of you to write Civilians need to know that you have heart, and not all police officers are bad guys. Thanks
and not all police officers are bad guys??? who thinks that?? maybe the real bad guys themselves... the diallo shooting was so tragic... I love this song.. but att the same time, the police today encounters gang violence, drive by shootings with weapons alot bigger than hand guns... it's insane, thats what you see in WAR... that shit is what the MILITARY train for... and now police officers have to deal with this at home on their own streets.. if that is what you face every other day, you shoot!
I'm not saying that its either right or wrong, but people need to understand that police officers are at times put under extreme pressure where they have to make a decision with only the time it takes to blink ones eye... being shot with 41 shots?? YES that is INSANE!!! and I "support" this song.. but you need to be sober and see both sides... being a police officer was never easy, but today probably worse than ever... you might face criminals geared for war on your own streets..
Sober? Take a look at my channel, my kid was killed by a drunk driver, he laid on the side of the road for 4 hours. No State Trooper came to my door, it was on the news before I heard. Not easy being me either... yet I can forgive.
@malm1986 I think the message of the song is sort of missed, he never calls out the cops on what they did. Bruce got a lot of criticism at the time the song was released but said in interviews the song was about how the whole situation was tragic, how a country can come to a point where a teenager reaching for his wallet is shot down because he automatically veiwed as dangerous and the police that have to live with the fact that they killed an innocent person.
Being a 20 year law enforcment officer I was initally bothered by this song; now my feeling is quite the contrary. This song is very moving. The Diallo shooting while very tragic brought to light several issues about law enforcement rarely discussed before. Police (and soldiers) are commonly placed in situations where they have to make difficult decisions in a split second and with limited information. I believe 41 shots were fired because the cops thought they were being fired upon. Tragic
The furore over this song was as baffling as it was distrubting. Bruce wrote about a murder, pure and simple, and yet the media and NYPD and Mayor Giulani turned on him for doing so. Shooting someone 41 times is excessive even if you think he is a crimnal. I am a freelance writer and in my review of Springsteen's Top 20 tracks, this had to be make the list. The guiater solo at the bridge represents the anguish of Diallo's mother.
@billybillyboab Yes, well said I was living in NYC when this went down.
It made the papers for weeks, and the NYPD felt betrayed by this song.
Bruce made a comment that he was booed by hem, but when he played another song all seemed to forget and cheered him on. Bruce is an honest man who stands up for his values no matter what comes down.
@billybillyboab He was shot at 41 times, hit 19 times. He ran from men identifying themselves as police officers. He drew a rectangular object (his wallet) from his pocket when he was only backlit by a vestibule light. The LEOs opened fire at a man holding a small, rectangular object.
The saddest thing about Amadou Diallo's death is that it was was totally avoidable, and caused by mistakes made and hasty actions taken by both himself and the officers.
The NYC police dept always gave Bruce an escort to Shea Stadium as a courtesy, when he sang this song they stopped with the escorts, Bruce didn't mind, but it really bothers me... it wasn't a secret...
so the cops shot some man 41 fuckin times just cas they couldnt see his hands and they assumed it was a gun? someone please fill me in on the story behind this song
If you go to Wikipedia, it says wallet, but in the days after The (NYC) Daily News wrote it could have been a cell phone, a wallet even an Ipod.. I am sorry about the mistake.
love this song love bruce springsteen sung with such passion. but im not sure of the story behind the song, i mean did the cops actually put 41 bullets into an innocent man rummaging around looking for his wallet or whats the story? does any1 know?
Thank you Suzzy - I'm from the other side of the pond, but feel for your losses as much as our own . . . . The Boss is awesome in his delivery of this number,in my humble opinion.
a -1? whoa where did that come from? I was responding to rgsaural. The comment from him seemed to say " This happens every day so what's the use? This is one of Bruces best songs in my humble opinion.
Life is unfair, but we don't have to accept it, we can fight back with love, education, and music- and Bruce excells at it all.
You`re right suzzy. I respect your opinion. We should be open-minded. Even it doesn`t make much difference, we should still fight back the injustice in this world and we should believe. why not? Thanks Bruce for making this thrilling and beautiful song. It really moved me. Anyway, Bruce`s guitar solo is really emotional and heartfelt. Peace. Gigla.
Another great job by Boss!
Sad that the video and the audio didn't match well though (by the end of the song, the video was about a whole bar behind the audio)
