Brown's mistake was accepting a neo-liberal model of economic mamagement, his basic stewardship was sound until the middle of the last decade when he allowed spending to go to far ahead of revenues (though you could argue this was correct considering the Tory underinvestment), he should have reined in spending and paid off my more debt, but he did not rebuild the economic base.
