Yes-weird, whimsical and pretty wonderful to boot. It's great to see Robin sing his version of an ancient Dave Macon song then straight into a song by a very young RW.
( Dave Macon used to perform with his son Dorris- not a lot of people know that....)
I've seen him three times over the years, He's played all over the World, including Woodstock, during the first spell with ISB, the man has music flowing through him, so good to see someone enjoying their music so much
Couldn't agree more with that. I suppose that if given the chance Robin would be sitting at home singing, writing, painting and reading- he was 66 last month. But fortunately for us, he's still rushing round Britain and what a pleasure it is to be in his company and watch him perform: he's a man you don't meet every day.....
.....and then some. There's nothing quite so enthralling as being able to recapture just what it was like the first time you heard Robin sing. Every time I see him live I can appreciate just how original and influential he's been - to me and to others,
Well, he asked everyone what he ought to play- usually once everyone has made a suggestion, he ignores most ideas and sings what he intended to in the first place. But my chum Don suggested he sing this....and miraculously he did- good fellow, Robin. Because he has his guitar permanently tuned to open F or somesuch, I have a theory that he's more likely to play a song if it's straighforward enough. So I wouldn't think he'd play Queen of Love for example as it's a bit complicated, but whoknows
Yes, you're right. I first him sing this at the Brass Band concert in Halifax in 1998(?) when he explained that he didn't really understand the song and over the years it's transformed effortlessly into this current version,
Well, Uncle Dave Macon songs aren't as popular as they once were (except in this house),though my friend Steve tells me that over the years, Robin's version is now a lot different to the original. Smoke Shovelling Song is from the very first ISB LP and Robin sang it because my chum Don had requested it. Robin forgot a verse for which we forgive him as he probably hasn't sung it for 40 years. We all fell off our chairs in surprise when he started to sing this....
Why 'shame'? I simply don't understand the comment. It's pointless. Sure, he's done MANY better songs (his own mainly) but this is still good to see and certainly no 'shame'. You could make your comment about most songs by most performers.
I love this song!

IMO 'Jordan' is a pretty neat new RW song - on his latest record 'Just Like The River' - all good stuff

I can think of better songs than this that Robin used to sing. Shame.
