  • who thinks he sings well but not like the beatles

  • @cristian619hbk1 Bowie is a better singer that the Beatles.

  • Correct!Tony Stevens was my uncle people and he used to imitate Bowie in the 70s/80s. He made a few bob too!! You can tell with the word "customer" Tony was from the North of England and the accent comes through on that word! Sorry to disappoint people x

  • This is most certainly NOT David!!! I heard it played on a radio station today and they claimed that it was him. I could tell by listening that it isn't actually him, but just to be sure I looked it up and it is a session man called Tony Stevens.

  • Why in the hell is the piccolo trumpet exactly ONE BEAT ahead of where it's supposed to be?

  • One wonders what on earth that cornet player thought he was playing at the end.

  • not Bowie.

  • This is not the fucking Beatles..

  • @z10n thats why it says David Bowie- Penny Lane

  • @grahamm2709 It's not Bowie. Don't believe everything you read or hear. This is probably the same guy who did 'Life On Mars?' on those corny cover LP's. Sounds absolutely nothing like him

  • so why does it say the artist is 'the liverpool boys'?

  • @Linandemma it was used on the UK Top of the Pops albums that used to come out in the late 60s and early 70s

  • good cover version

  • So this is david bowie?

    ...

    I don't believe you!

  • This is a very good version but it's not Bowie!

  • @DominicanAllSaints I think you'll find it is David Bowie

  • Wow I've heard the beatles version a million times over, and this version is suddenly better!

  • The Beatles are better

  • For those who can read IT is TONY STEVEN .TONY STEVEN .TONY STEVEN. you have been told you cant all be THICK

  • Will this be a Cat Stevens "Cats in the cradle" thing all over again?

  • Comes to think of it I'm getting to think it's NOT DAVID. Reason being In 1966, 1967 DB was writing and recording ORIGINAL SONGS, right ?!?? So why would he then choose to record a cover song let alone of a classic hit in the same year???? Whoever it is own up to it NOW ?!!!!!!! LOL

  • Sounds very much like David to me of 1967 vintage. You there David ? Can you confirm ?

  • This is NOT Bowie. it is British session singer TONY STEVEN this track was produced by Bill Welling and released in March 1967 on the Top Six and MFP record labels. This is FACT not FICTION.It is a cover version of the Beatles,Tony Steven recorded covers versions for various labels in the U.K and was a regular vocalist on the B.B.C for many years.

  • @artistry6781 I still keep an open mind about this. I would say it IS Bowie on MFP who made small runs and thus evaded royalty payments to copyright owners and songwriters. A bloke called Reg Dwight did a top cover of Cotton Fields . I am sure you will know who he is and if you see that album look for a track called Questions. Great song but only sighted one- mine jumps in that track. Page ? Jones wonder who exactly was on those sesssions? Thanks 4 info

  • It's not Mr. Bowie. If it were, it would have more of his voice represented as to not confuse anyone of who's singing. A real fan knows the way of Mr. Bowie.

  • @SamEricDavis BULL SHIT

  • It sounds like Bowie, but at the same time, it sounds different. im so confused.

  • @JonBonBowie Hi Jon. That is not Bowie. I know because its my Uncle! he used to imitate Bowie for those Totp albums. Sorry to disappoint

  • @dbscrumpy100 if thats true, then your uncle is amazing at imitating bowie.

  • rubbish

  • love Bowie, love his rendition!

  • This is a fake. Good impression though! Anyone that's listened to Bowie long enough would know it's not him

  • I've met David and asked him several historical questions. He says he's definitely NOT ever recorded this!

  • thats bowie you know the voice a mile off

  • crap, its not bowie

  • Good Cover.

  • 27 people are retarded

  • this is brilliant a great cover

  • david bowie butcherd this one.

  • this is great!!! I love this song, and I love David Bowie!!! And you'll notice he tried to keep it pretty much the same, which is nice since I love the original! made my day

  • i thought bowie hate paul.great!

  • Some people say 'it sounds nothing like David Bowie'. If that was the case, there wouldnt be a post of this song would there?! Of course it sounds like him; thats the point. if it is him or not- who knows- it doesnt seem to be traceable,

  • Great song!!

  • Bowie doing a karaoke version of one of Beatles' many classics.

  • OMG THIS IS AWESOME

  • Don't even try insulting me. No, I don't own a record sore. My good friend does. I found that information on Wikipedia. If you have an issue with that, bring it up with them. Now go away. I no longer care about this song or you.

  • This is David Bowie. I've loved and listened to Bowie for a long time, and I'm almost positive this is him. It didn't sound like it at first, but as I listened to the rest of it, there are obvious bowie-isms in the voice.

  • This is from a compilation called The Chameleon Chronicles. It is listed

As being by an Unknown Artist. He has always denied it, although he

Needed the money at the time!

  • not bowie

  • obviously not Bowie.

    Why keeping this title?

  • Let's do comparisons. (just start with the url for homepage, copy paste the stuff after the colons in)

    1967: watch?v=hHzKazMzTyA

The day after Lennon was shot: watch?v=IftjxN_KJoM

    1997: watch?v=UnTrbvg4wNg

And a little more recently: watch?v=HO7FTtX73GE

These show that while his voice is close, this isn't Bowie. You just have to compare to tell. Also, I don't think this would be a recent recording at all because the quality of this sounds like something from before 1990.

  • Comment removed

  • I fully agree !

  • Oh, no it's not !

  • its bowie, early early into his career.

  • @ATXmyriah --- NOT DAVID BOWIE, NOTHING LIKE HIS EARLY VOICE OR ACCENT !

  • this is not David Bowie, go look it up

  • Comment removed

  • @TheZappawizard It's from a bootleg album from around 1979 called The Chameleon Chronicles...I did the research and I'm a Bowie fan.

  • @strummer77clash I don't care what you have it on, it's not him. It was originally released on an album called "Hits 67" and sung by session singer Alan Johnson. Wise collectors know this already.

  • @TheZappawizard Hmm... While it DOES sound like him, it sounds like him recently. A blog I saw said this was from the 60's, but watch?v=hHzKazMzTyA is what Bowie was doing, and his voice is more reedy back in the 1960's, and he doesn't seem to be doing covers... So while it'd be a nice thought, I think you're right. It's just that people would have to listen and compare. Or ask Bowie himself, lol..

  • @TheZappawizard Congratulations. You must know more than I do. My life is now ruined, I'll never be able to show my face in my record store again.

  • @strummer77clash I think that's obvious.

  • @strummer77clash You own a record store? I feel sorry for your customers, having to deal with such a musical nitwit.

  • Its not-sorry-no way

  • if you can't tell this is Bowie, then you are deaf. PERIOD! THE END!!!

  • @saltintherainbow WRONG !!!!! NOT DAVID BOWIE !

  • I have studied David Bowie's accent and voice for 40 years and -THIS IS NOT DAVID BOWIE.

  • @DinoLucca1

you've.. studied his voice for 40 years? uhm... maybe you should try chess instead.. cuz thats really weird

  • @xNervousxBreakdancex ------Why ?

  • I think that this song is more beautiful when the beatles sung it

but bowie did also a good job x

  • @SomeoneLikeMe13 THIS IS NOT DAVID BOWIE !

  • @DinoLucca1 ok well then it's not david bowie

but the beatles did a better job anyway :D

  • no es su estilo pero es el.

Tambien versiono canciones como imagine o across the universe pero mas ``suyas´´

Pero aun asi las de los beatles son mucho mejores.Mas dulces i mejor tocadas.

  • This is so cool...I have most of Bowie's rare stuff but thi9s was new to me! Kudos!

  • @JuanLorenZerimarNOT DAVID BOWIE, NOTHING LIKE HIS EARLY VOICE OR ACCENT !

  • why does no one think this is bowie haha

  • @jbergs22 I DO THINK IT IS BOWIE 95% SURE, WHO ELSE WOULD IT BE ???????????

  • it's not Bowie

  • @MajorBjorn yes it is.

  • I could do a better impression. Nice try.

  • i love his accent when he says customer. dunno why. it just sound appealing :)

  • Hate to break it to all of you but...YES... this is David singing!

  • @vashydana Any more info to back this up? Sure doesn't sound like Bowie

  • @vashydana bullshit..IT IS NOT BOWIE....it sounds nothing like him at any stage in his career

  • @keef40 that's tue, it doesn't sound like Bowie, but I assure you this is him...

  • @keef40 It DOES sound like him, unfortunately for you. It s untraceable, but probably this IS the Bowie singing it.

  • @carlphone ...why unfortunately for me...unfortunate for you if you believe this is bowie...and it sounds nothing like bowie

  • @vashydana actually it sounds more like john hutchinson, his 'feathers' bandmate. Search bowie ching a ling to hear hutch singing.

  • absolutly 100 % not david bowie, not even close

  • @chaostribbles Never been around Bromley, but, if on one hand Paul had confirmed that no places descripted in the music have existed, on the other, Penny Lane was a road and a place where it crossed with Smithdown Road. There was a fire station on Allerton Road, and "finger pie" seems to be an obscene expression from Liverpool (Steve Turner). Forgive me because this is subject to criticism.

  • Bowie should have definitely auditioned for The New Seekers.

  • IT'S NOT DAVID BOWIE SINGING!!

  • @kreativdronare ehmm.. yes it is. The song of course is originally by beatles.

  • Good old David singing, penny lane. Well i never knew this. Do the trumpets seem a bit off at 2:20 and 2:45 ?

  • @salvadormarley Yep, trumpets are one quarter note behind compared to the original, all through the song

  • @ekathe85 Does not matter. It s an O.K. cover of an O.K. song

  • @proslade Why is everyone suddenly so defensive? I didn't say it wasn't ok, I was just answering the guy's question...

  • Thanks for all your emails people! I think we are dealing with the problem now. Hi Pete up in Bradford. Yes I agree The Beatles were the best. Hey has anybody got Hot Hits on 45? It has loads of these sixties cover versions including Penny Lane. The CD was issued some time back and is now deleted. Has some good sleeve notes too.

  • Wriggle and squirm all you like Fio or whatever your real name is. I don't think you can make it any worse than it already is. Readers need to know about vile anti Brit insults. Like I said people this is one dangerous nut.

  • @delfuller1 Still having a conversation with yourself???

Please speak for yourself, tard. Viewers can decide for themselves what they read or comment, they don t need your imbecile "advice". I am not dissing any Brit or UK great.

  • Not even a good try by proslade to wriggle out of it. Too many people have seen his vile comments. Guess he does not realise emails can be traced and copies are retained. I did get one of his quotes wrong. On re-checking he did not say Led Zep were all crap. He said they were 95% crap. We must get our facts right musn't we. New users to Youtube will not get far dissing our UK greats and insulting the Brits. P.S. Does anybody know what a tard is? Oh yes, now I know. It's a reference to Dr Who.

  • @delfuller1 Still fantasizing? Please, Mr. Defuller you can trace or copy or make up whatever you like, nobody is interested in your crap. Idiot with your "British Pride". Get a life instead of stirring something up some rubbish people are not even interested in.

I think viewers are more likely reading your bolowny comments here on page 8, 9 and 10, which you cannot wriggle out of, and having some real amusement!

  • Wow! My mailbox has never been so busy. 27 email requests in the last hour. Keep em coming friends. I'm out tonight so there might be a slight delay in my replies but rest assured I'll get back to you. Enjoy the music people!

  • @delfuller1 Excuse me Mr. Delfuller, you need to get a real life without hate, obsessions and phantasy, although you are apparently too much of a mental dwarf to make that accomplishment; considering your age you are prolly too far gone already, which is too bad for you...

You are such a knobhead, that you don t even realize what gibberish and hilarious comments about this upload you have written which everybody here can read on page 8 and 9 on this forum. (LOL)

  • @proslade LGDB!! Hey there. Mummy been letting you play with the computer again? Naughty mummy! Aren't you the one who wrote me The Beatles were in the right place at the right time, anybody could have done what they did? Queen, Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Kinks, Stones, Led Zep all crap? Come on fellow Brits. don't put up with this overseas cretin.

  • @delfuller1 No mental tard, I did not say that, actually you are listing some of my favorite bands. This fantasy about me dissing big UK bands is only happening in your little head. You are just having a conversation with yourself also. Go see a psychiatrist, that is the friendliest advice I can give to you.

  • For evidence and for your amunsement, read Mr. Delfuller s comments on page 8 and 9 etc. LOL

  • proslade is a total nut reported to Youtube a while back for forum abuse and anti-British insults. I have long rambling emails from him slagging off most of the major UK greats including The Beatles. They are too long to reproduce here. Any readers interested can email me for a complete copy but be warned they are highly offensive to UK music and make unpleasant reading. The only band he favours is Slade but I doubt he’ll be wishing any of us Brits a Merry Christmas Everybody...

  • @delfuller1 LOL You are threatening me? You think anybody here is taking your crap seriously? If you shout so loud, that must make you concerned about my pointing to what you commented on pages 5 etc. here hahaha.

What is making you so frustrated Sir (or boy)? I think you are an immature and pathetic twat! BTW the Beatles are one of my favorite bands! Is my username so misleading for you?

For my amusement I will read some of your gibberish on this forum, was it Adolf on the chorus? LOL

  • Who are you calling grandpa you half wit? If you have nothing intelligent to say shut it or I'll come over there and shut it for you. Apologies to the normal sensible people in the world....

  • Can't believe you people still talking about this!!! Let's face it none of you are going to be happy whatever the result. Maybe t's a question of which one of you can shout the loudest...?

  • @delfuller1 Just take it with a grain of salt, luv.

  • @delfuller1 Excuse me Sir, weren t you shouting the loudest until a month or so ago, I checked the comments from page 5 and on here, I have never seen anybody shouting and arguing any ouder on this forum than you!

Get over it Grandpa, this "mystery" whoever sang it is never gonna be resolved, and the discussion on this forum continues... BTW am I shouting here? I am just picking up on some tard comments, that is all, no cursing etc. So can we get along with it now? Thanks.

  • I think the point in posting something like this IS to spark controversy.

To whomever did it, sounds more fun that impressive.

  • @LunaSeaSane ??? Maybe someone uploads it becoz it is a nice cover of a good songs by the "great" Beatles, not minding the controversy that surrounds it. Whatever is "sparked" by the uploader, is not to blame to the uploader, who maybe was not aware of this silly controversy at the time he put it on youtube...

What do you think, is it Bowie or not?

  • @proslade I think it's a really masculine Madonna plus this chap from Bromley called Evans.

Could be an obscure 1968 duet in a cover hits compilation... those were popular back in the day.

  • @LunaSeaSane I think Madonna was 9 in 1967 and Bromley was formed in 2000, plus it is one person singing. Can you make a better guess? My guess? It is Bowie. Nice cover and why are people making all kinds of guesses or looking for ghosts?

If you can prove me or the uploader wrong, you tell me. Thx.

  • @proslade God, she must have developed fast then...

From the two main vocals there is one that does sound like Daves and again, on one of the backing vocals.

But as it is, I have no solid data to back that up. So good luck to both of you.

  • @LunaSeaSane Okay, I will take it "met een korreltje zout" in Dutch. Thank you for your input!

  • Geen dank, schat.

  • lame cover. he practically just pasted his vocals over the original. Love you bowie, but come on man!

  • @MaxwellsAttourney Do you think it is actually Bowie? There is a big controversy about it ....

  • @MaxwellsAttourney Well WTF I am not interested in Mr. "Sophisticate" if he did it or not, it is a good cover and probably it is him, it isn t even a great song. At least it is better than his outrageous cover of "Across the Universe" that I don t like at all.

  • bah what's up with that trumpet coming a bar too early!!!

  • this is good, but not so notably different from the beatles original; kind of like aerosmith's cover of come together isn't so different from the beatles' original; and if they're that alike, i'd just as soon listen to the beatles.

  • Comment removed

  • @DytchWytch agreed.

  • Whether it is Bowie or not, I like this version of the song. Since we can't determine whether it is him or not can we just drop the conflict and admire the song!!!!!!

  • @S93G You are right, I don t understand why the "Thin White Dukes" pundits here make such a fuss it is not him, it will be impossible to prove it is not him! I have also shared this with a lot of English friends here, most of them are saying, it could be him, in most occasions, not outspoken Bowie fans, there you go.

And as you say, it is a good cover and it will be impossible to prove it is not him!

  • even Bowie has denied this and it doesn't sound anything like him,i have the original T.O.T.P.S lp much as i'd like to say what a fantastic Bowie collectable this is it just isn't!

  • @fatley Where can I read or watch Bowie is denying it? Doubt if there is credible evidence he denied.

  • @proslade it was in an interview in the mid eighties i honestly cannot remember the mag maybe the Face or QC or Q MAG,I have it somewhere amongst the hundreds of magazines collected in my spare room,im 52 and im a Bowie collector of some 40 yearsand ithe timbre of the voice is different to Bowie's.Bowie was in his Anthony Newley phase when this was recorded compare the sound of those recordings and there is little similarity

  • @fatley Thanks, I hope you can dig it up in your spare room so I as well as others who think it might be Bowie, can read it! I am not a fan so I don t care that much which phase he was, just I hear some striking similarity here! Some other English people I have shared it with, agree. Also, this recording was done anonymously so Bowie could have said whatever about it, but this article might give a clue.

  • @prosladEyour welcome,mate im just trying to be helpful,greetings from Bowie's home town London,Engerland!!

  • @fatley Haha thanks, I appreciate it, hope you can solve this "controversy" that has been going on since the eigthies apparently!!! Cheers!

  • ° Nice...

  • Not Bowie. Sorry Paul/Beatle fans, it just isn't him singing this song. This has been discredited by Nicholas Pegg's exhaustive book on Bowie's catalog and numerous other sources. @proslade, I have not idea what Uncut was thinking, but they bought into the myth apparently.

And, really, does this SOUND at all like the Thin White Duke? Not even close, not even in the early years. David didn't employ nearly as much vibrato as this fellow.

  • @IAmNewMusic Sorry sir, it was an anonymous recording for a 67 collection of hits.

It does sound like him and that is what the publishers of Uncut and the people of Danny Baker Breakfast Show have thought and they apparently have more evidence than you have. I challenge you to refer to a publication or broadcast in which it is specifically is denied, so I can judge it for myself. I don t think you can.

  • I don't know if it's Bowie or not, it definitly sounds very close to his voice, a pretty good cover.

  • @sweetdictator Agreed, but you are probably more 'objective' than Bowie 'hardliners' who are emphatically spouting it is not Bowie, actually it is confirmed on page 59, Uncut Magazine, September 2009 that it is Bowie. And it is based on fact, that is what they say!

  • David Bowie is one of my idols but nobody can do the Beatles like the Beatles.

  • @LennonMeringuePie What a bolowny! Of course not. But also, nobody can do Bowie like Bowie, or Slade like Slade or whatever.

  • @proslade That's interesting. You're right.

  • @LennonMeringuePie

"but nobody can do the Beatles like the Beatles"

How very true that is. A couple of noteworthy exceptions exist, but on a percentage basis, the rate of good covers of Beatles material, compared to the amount of covers that have been recorded, would probably be below 1%. I just don't how anyone would think that covering Beatles material would produce much of meaningful result unless it provided a particular nuance of interpretation that added value to the original.

  • Comment removed

  • @proslade - Do you always have this problem of being destructive in your criticism?

  • I checked the Uncut Magazine, page 59 September 2009 that was suggested here and indeed they confirm a 'young David Bowie' singing, also the paragraph on 'Dany Baker s Breakfast Show' and it also confirmed the 'Liverpudlian' accent -the word 'customer'. It would also fit historically. I have not found anything to the contrarary.

Why are people who emphatically spout it is not Bowie, usually big Bowie fans? Do they think it is a shame if he sang this?? Then why did he cover Across the Universe?

  • I love David Bowie's voice, and it's very versatile, but why would David want to do this to his voice? I don't believe it's David.

  • @naumnn Why not? And why did he make the Across the Universe cover of the beatles then???

  • @proslade I'm not saying that he wouldn't want to do "Penny Lane," (no pun intended), I'm just saying that to me, it doesn't sound like David's voice. In Across the Universe," you can hear his gorgeous voice. It's amazing! And a great song. Penny Lane is also a great song, but I don't think David Bowie sang this version. I don't hear his voice in this. That's all. :-)))

  • @naumnn You suggested 'David would not want to do this to his voice' or not? Okay you say it sounds different. But Across the Universe, which I think he sang too dramatic, was 8 years later!

Uncut Magazine knew about this controversy very well before publication and will have checked it carefully, so why would they connect him? They must think like many others that it COULD be his voice. This recordings for the 67 Hits LP were done anonymously so we will never know the 'real' singer for sure.

  • Definately not David Bowie. It might be a great cover and if it was DB I am sure in his well documented anthology it would be mentioned. I don't have a clue who it is but it is not DB. Somebody emphatically spouted it sounds like the Janine period but I don't hear it.

  • I’m not suggesting this is proof as I do not believe everything I read but for an alleged quote from Mr. B himself find the main page (not the forum) of this website, David Bowie-db-discography. Once you are there either use the search box top right or easier still go to the foot of the page A-Z and look under L for “A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You”. That’s another track off the same Hits 67 LP.

  • David Bowie came from another world.

  • @ERIBEIRO77 That's a fair description of Bromley. Believe me, I've BEEN there :o

  • @ERIBEIRO77 from a perfect world*

  • 0:35 --- Why is it missing the chord change, particularly when this cover is otherwise faithful to the original?

  • These hit compiliations from the sixrties and seventies were issued on a series of EPs and LPs and featured session musicians and vocalists. Whilst some renditions of songs were OK, others were pitiful. Penny Lane here (from Hits 67, MFP 1089) is not bad but the trumpet solo is all wrong and as you say one or two chords are not right. They enabled people to buy a dozen or more chart hits for a budget price, a typical LP like this being just over 50p in 1967.

  • @ColdMountainWater i know, that has always bothered me, wtf?

  • @DaveShmadeCalabria - The missing chord is such an obvious error. Considering that Penny Lane is one of the foremost demonstrations of Paul's almost unparalleled gift for melodic composition, it's hard to believe they changed that phrase by omitting the chord change.

  • @ColdMountainWater Come on, this was just a recording for a 67 Hits LP, 12 songs for the price of maybe 2 singles, 45p and sung by a then unknown Bowie. This is just a good song, it is O.K. but I think the Beatles are a little bit overrated. If this is one of the 'foremost' demonstrations of Sir Paul s gifts (don t forget the mention of 'Sir', coz otherwise is looks like you are saying Paul is just an average human being), well I know 1000 s of better tunes and melodies, before and after

    1967.

  • @proslade - Your injection of this unrelated point about "Sir" indicates cynical view. Your reference to thousands of other tunes (presumably you're referring to songs written by other artists) is also cynical, since my comparison was based on Penny Lane in comparison to McCartney's other songs. So, it appears that you're trying to stir up some crap here. Thanks for weighing in and making your intentions clear, though.

  • @ColdMountainWater You are welcome sir, but stating 1% of Beatles covers is good, isn t that Beatles prejudism??? And you were talking about Beatles covers in GENERAL, not just Pennylane. And I am not 'stirring up crap', I have mentioned facts about the 67 LP, the exact price then, how it was recorded and why it wasn t a 'perfect' rendition. And 100% of Slades covers were supurb. These facts you didn t even know about so I mentioned it. And calling these facts "crap", well that is your problem.

  • It's not Bowie.

  • Probably the best proof for people here who think it is Bowie is that the Bowie 'pundits' can t refer to any publication or any announcement that this is another singer. The more fussing about, contradicting on possible singers and lambasting the publications such as in the the 'Uncut Magazine' I have referred to, the more it is obvious that there is simply no written evidence claiming it is not Bowie. This song was on a 67 hits LP, not a Bowie album, so you don t find it on his discography.
