Nick Heyward at this point was "allowed" to crack by poor management, who failed to understand the chemistry of the band and helped drive the wedge through it. Eveybody concerned thought they'd get "2 acts for the price of 1" including Arista Records who Nick remained contracted to, but they killed the "golden goose". By todays pace it's inconcievable that in a 6 month period Nick had a nervous breakdown, left the band after a protracted period and then launched his solo career.
NH and the boys just played theri first major gig in 27 years at Rock The Moor on Saturday 22nd May 2010.My understandiung is that it all "got a bit much" for NH and he walked before the solo career took off
@Zorpis In the States, received no airplay (at least in my part of the country). I always took that as a hint that a song with no airplay meant it was great. As in this case. I duly bought this import when first released!
A really great song. Shows the amazing songwriting talent of this group. Must have been one of the best songs of the 80ies, albeit I heard it for the first time today and it made my day!
This is my favourite Haircut song. I love Mark's festive percussion, the jangling guitars and Phil's sax, which reminds me of 'Baker Street'. A touch of harmonica would have spiced it up, though - Nick or Graham could have used one on a holder.
I saw haircut 100 last month. Only trouble was that the group only contained one original member from 1982! Before anyone asks, it wasn't Nick Heyward.
Only one original member?! Apparently, and I have it on good authority, Nick was forced out, rather than leaving of his own accord! I'm still a big fan of his to this day.
@goodysun why did they split??it seemed so odd at the time-as they were getting big. such a shame-his solo stuff was great, but he always looka little lost without the band..
@thelittlebombardier The story is that the rest of the band ousted Nick, rather than him moving onto a solo career of his own volition. I've been told that by some other lad on here, who claims to have had 'inside' knowledge. I still think 'Pelican west' is one of the great original style albums ever. It's still such a joy to listen to. If anyone knows what Nick's up to, let us know. Have tried the web-site, a few times, to no avail. Possibly the most underrated singer-song writer we've seen.
@goodysun NH and the boys just played theri first major gig in 27 years at Rock The Moor on Saturday 22nd May 2010.My understandiung is that it all "got a bit much" for NH and he walked before the solo career took off
@StevoPivo Any other gigs planned that you know of? Blimey, it would be great to see them together again. I assumed the same as you. but a lad on youtube said Nick was ousted and he claimed to have 'inside' info. Cheers for the message bud.
@goodysun this is incorrect. my dad was their tour manager for pelican west and paint and paint. nick was not ousted. he got a major deal with another label. and for the record, he didn't write as much as everyone was led to believe. but all that aside, pelican west is a truly fantastic album. great songs, great melodies.
@andrewlonguk Nervous Breakdown was always the reason given for the split. And the members confirmed as much on the VH-1 Band reunited a couple of years back
@StevoPivo obviously a press release. no band would admit the lead singer/most famous out of the group left because he had a better offer. nick also threw a toilet out of window whilst on tour in germany, so his mental state was never in doubt. he was off the wall back then. still, he got a major deal from another label, and the manager at the time went with him, using older unreleased haircut material to buffer out the solo album.
@andrewlonguk That does seem odd.Why would the rest of them EVER get back together if a "friend" had ditched them like that ? Why would a major label break what was a winning formula by only trying to recruit NH ? Doesn't add up.Les Nemes toured within him again in '93 asa "session" bassist
@StevoPivo oh dear. i see this is getting a tad silly. Yes it was a winning formula. They sold nearly 5 million world wide, and were about to crack america. The fact still remains, Nick was offered a better deal, so he left the band. My dad then managed the rest of them through Paint and Paint, but it was doomed seeing as the "face" of the band was absent making a hit solo offering. Plus the album didnt have that fruity sound of Pelican West. None of them fell out, the singer just went solo.
@andrewlonguk "a tad silly" - pourquoi ? cos there may be more than one side to any given story - its called perception mate :-) - I've never heard "that" version of the split - happy to buy into it providing its corroborated
@StevoPivo I sense a tad hint of "patronisation". I'll ignore it as I wouldn't think you'd stoop that low on youtube. Naturally there are many versions of even the most insignificant story. But, remember history is always (mostly) written by the victor (contradiction in the artistic licience sense). If it's corroboration you want, give him a call. :-D
i was there, they were quite good live,i can't remember the name of the support act, they were a reggae band, aswad? steel pulse?,not sure, anyway a great night.
It's clear on this performace how Nick was cracking under the pressure from the 'instant' success, and the strain of writing another album so soon after the first. How pissed off does Mark Fox look here, a stark contrast to the happy guys of 3 months earlier. This was to be the first single off the second album but was the last thing released by this line-up
They must have been huge at this point, rare for TotP to let a record continue right to the end.

I'd recommend the 12 inch version of this song, you can really hear the tight musicianship involving the bass, drums and the horns.

3 months on i know... 12" of favorite shirts is good. they were more than just a pop band. though at 13 yo, you don't really realise these things.
