  • Depends on the flag you use and it's pixel rate so be careful and make sure you use a high res picture. I also found that using curves gives you more control over the tonal range of the hand. Thanks Gav, great tut I learned something today and thats what it's all about! 5-stars.

  • @VeyronBD No, you just made that up, you said "my quad core ATI thank you."

  • @soocatwoman

i cant understand your english very well but, i think you mean how to cut the shape of the hand so fine?... use quick selection tool... or if u want more smooth edges, use pen tool, but have patience.

  • @Sukaitora Thank you ^^

  • Hi Joselito48, The same happened to me as well. you just need to go to Select->Inverse to Inverse the selction and everything you look right:-)

  • i keep having a problem with the vector mask it comes out apposite color. if you go on 5:50 on your video and see the vector layer next to the union flag you see that the hand is colored white and the background is black,, for me it comes the opposite the hand black and the background white can you please help me PLEASE.

  • you have just changed my life gavin...i think we should get married <3

  • great tute!

  • union jack? wtf, u mean british flag?

  • @Beatz4liffe The British flag is called Union Jack.

  • @BruckThatsMe Actually it's the Union Flag. It's only a "jack" when on a warship in the navy. Seeing as we have such a famous history as a seafaring nation I guess it's become the most common name for it.

  • @BruckThatsMe Not trying to p*ss you off and be geeky here mate but it's only called a Union Jack when on a ship. Otherwise it's just called a Union Flag.

  • @BruckThatsMe How 'bout the Union Jill?

  • @BruckThatsMe

No, its called a "Union Jack" when it is on a mass on a ship, its the union flag when it is not!

  • @BruckThatsMe It's called the Union Jack only when it's on a boat other wise it's just called the Union Flag :)

  • Nice! thank you very much!

  • Great tutorial. Thanks a lot for this.

  • @VaRiaLGaMing why dont you learn how to spell before you start criticizing

  • This is the Coolest Photoshop trick I've seen yet! Very good man, THX! One question tho: Why is it called a "union jack"? Is that just cultural colloquialism?

  • Wow--thanks so much for this. I'm a Paint Shop Pro user and our displacement map is set up differently, but I can still use this tutorial as a guide. Awesome resource. It would have taken me countless hours to figure this out on my own.

  • This is the best photoshop tutorial which I ever seen!!! Thank you, It´s definitely my favourite! :)

  • i'v been looking for this technique for over a decade !

    THANK YOU, very helpful

  • Nice Tutorial Mate. Thanks

  • how did you cut out the background from that picture of your hand?

  • @roxyroxy34 You could do that either with magic wand selection tool or by setting a path.

Given the hand was deliberately shot against a blank background the magic wand selection tool would be a 1 click solution and the one to go for.

If you had a distracting background create a path then right click on the path to make it a selection.

You can also download the 'extract' filter from Adobe and paint around the edges and let the filter do the work.

Bound to be other ways to. Hope this helps

  • cool video, sir! but i'm wondering, is it possible to do this effect for changing faces?

  • Man, you are awesome!!!!!!!!
