Look on wikipedia for a detailed definition, but in New Orleans, Mardi Gras is an annual week-long party featuring dozens of daily, crazy parades with colorful themes and great music. The parade riders wear masks and costumes and throw trinkets to the crowds who are also supposed to be in costumes and masks.
Mardi Gras was originally the last day to "fatten-up" on food, drink and other pleasures before beginning the Lenten fast, but over the last two hundred years, the Mardi Gras celebration has taken on a life and personality of it's own and is the heartbeat of New Orleans, the most charismatic city in America, and possibly the world.
If coming to New Orleans for Mardi Gras is not on your list of Ten Things To Do Before You Die, it should be. You'll never experience anything like it.
One of the best vids on youtube showing floats and throwers... just too bad you didn't keep the flavor of it by adding some Mardi Gras music or just leaving it natural..
You're right, it was a poor choice... late night editing session after parading all day. I changed the music to the March Fourth Marching Band, the only brass band on Youtube's music selection. Thanks for the input!
THanks for the video, I'm showing it on a Brazilian blog, to show how different is the "carnaval" there
