  • Breathtaking.

  • He gets a lot of mileage out of just a voice and a guitar.

  • I think the drums sound loud because of the venue they were playing in. Must have been a small bar. I liked it though.

  • agreed about the backup vocals, but i think the drums kind of work...

  • You know, in almost all the arrangements that have other people/instruments in them, the drums sounds ridiculous. They're out of place, as is the accompanying guy's falsetto next to Justin's. He's so good on his own.

  • Those drums are dumb. Two dudes on drumkit paying identical, straightforward, crappy beats. The record was so beautiful with the lush harmonies and such, and those drums do not replicate the magic of the album.

  • Wow, nice song.

    SOunds really good live.

  • he,s on at glastonbury twice this year woo wwoooo, carnt wait

  • What an amazing song. It must be awesome to see him live, and not just on YouTube.

  • I'm going to see him, at lowlands this summer!

  • fuck you and who you're coming with. bon iver is great.

  • man, are you serious? calm down. it's only music.

  • "goe smoke some dop" you fail. leave intelligent music to intelligent listeners.

  • Well said dude.

  • Tower of Power, yeah so poetic and underground. Fuck you. Bon iver is beauty and you dont get a thing.

  • Who's gonna love you? Who will fight?

  • you should probably step up and write a better song then

  • augfive go listen to akon or lil wayne and shut up...justin vernon has more musical talent in his little finger then the people you listen to have in their whole body

  • even better

  • hahaha you're a joke mate

  • theyve already made a new album. called bloodbank.

  • great song, are they working on a new album???

  • Fuck I hate retards in crowds who can't shut the fuck up while someone is performing. As if ANYTHING ANYONE has to say is so important that they have to talk over someone's performance. Stay the fuck home if you have the attention span of a six-year-old.

  • AGREED!!

  • @smallcretzuli No way man. It's all about the ambiance. I agree that there's got to be a level of respect for the performer, but in my opinion if you're playing at a coffee house or a bar, you've got to anticipate people talking. To be honest, he's got the place captivated for the most part anyway. =)

  • @smallcretzuli it's at a bar...

  • best version of this song on here. beautiful.

  • Some people....

  • im trying to understand why people are so hung up on the location of bands and inspired genres.

Music is music, if it inspires and captivates you, then it is good music. Nobody has the same opinion. But just because more bands are famous from one city or one country, that does not disregard the other artists and countries accomplishments.

  • Well said buddy.

  • Exactly! <3

  • Thanks shadowsarah.

I better go write that one down in my book of philosophy. Write after Plato and Aristotle.

  • whats with youtube removing the "live on jools holland" version of this. This version is ok, but that was immense.boo youtube boo!!

  • dude, why do you keep watching bon ivor videos if all you think he is is a "lumberjack with a falsetto".

    douche.

  • art comes from the individuals experience, fuk where they are from

  • screw that, i really dont care where is from. i'm just glad really really really super glad he sings like he does. is just amazing the emotion.thats more than singing. dont care where is from.

  • While most great musical acts are from Europe, you have to go back and give some creedance to acts like BB King, Dylan, Hooker, Berry and Johnson. If you think Chuck Berry and Johnnie Johnson weren't THE catalyst for rock and roll you need to open your eyes.

Today's (good) music is more Euro inspired, which is fine. Blues is originally from black spirtuals. Look up any online encylopedia and it'll tell you the same.

  • he's american? wow, i diden't think that those people could write such musical heart felt music... hah.

  • everything comes from something. i'll appreciate that.

  • I think I'm in love with him. This song is a miracle.

  • @unsolvedperson If you like Bon Iver check out our Flume cover search Ramble and Wake! Lets us know what you think. We also have originals too!

  • @unsolvedperson I love him too!!

  • "but I think there should be much more great music coming out of this giant, rich, hunk of land." where is your history? jazz......blues all birthed out of new orleans where do you think rock came from? we are the melting pot.

  • Hopefully you realize most of your so called inventions were inspired by/copies of events in other parts of the world. That American media has popularized the american aspect, due to it being the most capital powerful, doesnt mean they actually created the movement and or music...

It always baffles me how easily america claims something as their own by simply shouting it the hardest off the rooftops. Public perception unfortunatedly works that way, but history doesn't.

  • History is that Blues started from Negro spirituals and field cries and solidified in New Orleans. History is also that blues went on to inspire Jazz and eventually rock and roll, then in the 60s and 70s the UK artists got a hold of it and threw their own spin on it which did influence how we play to day, but rock and roll, blues and jazz are ALL american inventions. i didn't invent them, so i cant be proud of it, but it is what it is. read a book, punk.

  • im actually quoting my profesor, who is a doctor of music history for some 30 years now. you should check out field hollers and see if you don't hear the blues. blues, jazz, and rock and roll were not influenced by europe until the 60s. get over it.

  • Alright this is a revelation, didn't know him one hour ago, but am I the only geek to find him incredibly good and sexy too?

The vocal deepness that he delivers with the drummer & bass player, it's really sensual. this guy is gonna be huge and I dunno if it's good. But people are going to love this band.

  • Woooahh, fabulous.

  • i love it

  • heartbreaking

  • wow..i freakin want to see them live

  • FUCKING genius. finally some good american indie

  • american music is good.

  • Examples please?

  • neutral milk hotel, dirty projectors, bonnie 'prince' billy...

i just find in general that most of the music i have is american. there's a lot going on there (probably because of the size of the palce) as opposed to england (where i'm from) where most music is shite.

  • i seem to have misspelt place.

  • Almost every revolutionary rock band is out of a foreign country, mostly England. The only truly revolutionary band America's ever had is The Velvet Underground. I do like many American bands/singers, but I think there should be much more great music coming out of this giant, rich, hunk of land.

  • ah well i guess that's a matter of opinion, but i understand where you're coming from.

  • Bob Dylan.

    End of discussion.

  • Bob Dylan is extremely overrated.

  • Mozart, Bach, Chopin, Beatles (insert any other revolutionary band, of which 75% were european of origin.)

    Start of discussing.

  • I'm sorry, but although I'm European and I'd love to agree with you I can't. For a long time my thoughts were exactly the same, but you can't ignore the facts: Robert Johnson, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, The Jimi Hendrix Experience (though partly british), Michael Jackson, Nirvana...etc. These artists popularized the genre and by all means, they were very revolutionary. btw is it fair to have

classical composers in your list?America wasn't really civilized back then.

  • you are right though... you are just mapping where art has grown from. there is nothing wrong with that. its like writing history.

  • And I encourage you to make a list of revolutionary European bands, maybe you'll realize the same thing I did: The Beatles, The Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Pink Floyd, David Bowie and Queen are some great names but I can't reach any further actually. Yep, they're all rock and they can't compete with others like Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Bruce Springsteen, The Beach Boys, and the others I mentioned earlier.

  • That's a bit blanket but the great thing about music and art is it's all about perspective.

"Fact" is though that this guy is a great American musician.

  • the fugs were pretty revolutionary, and ahead of their time- really the first indie/punk band. look into them.

  • rock the garden June 21st! Featuring Andrew Bird, The New Pornographers, Cloud Cult, and Bon Iver!!!!!! THIS IS GONA' BE THE BOMB!!

  • where at? i guess i'll look it up but if you could please point me out in the right direction...

  • Minneapolis has a great music scene

  • He is from Wisconsin?

  • you are right. but he is a frequently visiting neighbor.

  • Bon Iver > M. Ward

  • um no...

I'm not saying you're completely wrong but Bon Iver has one really good album to M. Ward's four.

  • five even :)

as much as i love Bon Iver, you're right, there's no comparison... yet. Matt's also an incredible guitar player.

  • I think they do really different things. M. Ward pays much more homage to traditional folk.

  • I love this song <3

  • This song has made it into one of my favorites of all time

  • does anyone know how this is tuned?

  • I've done this in an open G tuning: G C C G C C. I tried a number of different tunings (E A D F# B B + capo I was a favourite), and this is the one I think works best. On the record, he's tuned just slightly below pitch, but it's easy to figure out if you listen to the ringing top notes (they're both C) and tune backwards from there. <---try that.

  • Wow, I thought the chorus in the live version would lack punch, but oh no it doesn't. Awsome

  • At 1:12 you can clearly see the drummer on backup vocals

  • SEAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your in this video!

  • This is more than perfect and this surpasses beauty. An expression of love so simply felt yet so painfully expressed; only someone who truly knows what it means to exist could be capable of producing something so heart-wrenching and so desirable.

  • i couldn't agree more. this is fantastic

  • perfect.

  • i can't get enough of this song... good stuff

  • There is nothing finer than a man straining at the top of his voice straining to tell us the bottom of his soul. Brilliant.

  • i love this song, it's just so poetic...

  • f*uck, way too good

  • yeah, this is exactly the same as the album version.

    very nice.

    i love this song.

  • the drums are a bit different (more pronounced) than the studio/album version.

the audio on this is a tad mid-range, Justin's voice sounds even more amazing in person.

  • hahaha, yeah, i wrote the comment before the increasing drum's sound, hehe. just before this increaseing intensity, the song is very very similar.

btw, about his live voice, you totally right, it's the sound of HIS voice at its purest form!

  • dios mio!

  • just amazing
