People in general are pretty irrational. However, the aspects of human nature that break down socialism are the rational aspects. The intelligent maneuvers to gain and keep power. The things that any intelligent entity would and should do if it knows others aren't as intelligent.

Now, our disagreement lies in the matter of whether or not to practise socialism - as far as I understand. In my opinion, we should, as you said, learn from out past by not ending in dictatorship and war, but still try to get as close to "ideal socialism" as possible. The selfishness of people today, natural instincts or not, are way too dominant.
