  • I've found that in most cases it's not necessary to lift the head, you can just slide your leg under their head because most people don't have their head flat on the ground when their opponent has them in side control. Even if their head is on the ground, unless they're putting weight on it (which is unlikely, unless they're bucking at the same time, and if they are bucking you aren't going to have the leverage to lift the head in that position anyway.) you can still slide it under with force.

  • Awesome submission! I watched this video before my jiu-jitsu class tonight and then tried it at class! I actually got the tap! Thanks for all the videos!

  • Favorite

  • best sub instruction on the net...broken down precisely step by step and especially nice at the end showing that upclose slowed down version...keep up the good work!

  • I'm having a lot of trouble finishing this choke. I get locked up tight and I've tried to adjust the angles but I'm just not getting the tap. I have a pretty good triangle off my back but from the mount and this inverted triangle I have problems. Any pointers?

  • I find it easier to start this one from kesa gatame

  • THis creates more pressure when u sit on the face, it is much more effective.

  • Its called a straight armbar not inverted

  • You're deff right, people do not see this coming at all...

  • thanks for all the great instructions!

  • The Kimura is a good option from this position as well.

  • love this move but cant seem to figure how to lift his head up that easily, trying to catch the guy if he lifts his head up. got any tips on how to get that leg under the head? thnx for uploads

  • just a really awesome submission my new favourtie submission!

  • in this video the guy on the bottom has his arm exposed. A competitive grappler won't have that out. but if you manage to catch it there or force it out, you could actually do broken kesa gatame into this choke, which might be easier for those of you with short legs like me.

  • Does he have any free arms to tap? Lol he probly doesnt know what to tap from first

  • nice, first dual submission i ever learned

  • chris lytle finished Matt brown with this exact submission ufc 116 check it out!

  • @admbjj yep...that's why I posted this on our main page again ;-)

  • @admbjj And Jason Gilliam at UFC 73 :-)

  • ive tryed getting the triangle but when i squeeze my knees as tight as i could, i couldnt get the tap, one of the higher belts noticed and said its more of a stalling postion , if u can get it by all means use it, dont work for me

  • Love the videos!!! THX for the uploads!!!! :)

  • U start from a sprawled out side mount....u were never taught to check the hip? I hope u are just being lazy for the sake of the technique u are doing

  • @KevinWood44 why you are hating? you think youre better than him? make a vid dont say something to him he need to do cuz his a master in it youre just a fat kid that saw few vids a nd wanne sound better than him and make tips

  • @politie210 Ari is NOT a master of anything.

Its ironic you mention a fat kid who saw a few videos and wants to give tips, because thats exactly what Ari does. (Minus the fat part. :D)

Ari's technique is horirble, and he has no business teaching anythign Jiu Jitsu related.

He barely knows how to shrimp or hip out, and hes putting out videos on inverted triangles from side control videos. Ridiculous.

Just google Ari's name, and see what comes up. He has been exposed.

  • @HalfGuardMike not true, the tecnique is correct, altrought from this position the triangle is more like a way to immobilize the opponent, the real submission is the armbar. But you can actually submit a guy with the triangle if you have a good squeeze. Now if you don't like what Ari (or anyone else, actually) says or does you should post some video where you show where other ppl are wrong, not just stand there and insult... that prouves nothing, except maybe that you're an ass.

  • @suicide977

Look at his countless other videos, Captain Kindergarten. While this may be one of his, "better" displays, it does not mean his technique is good. His hips are not on the ground, that is a very loose side control.

And do you really think once you step over the head, while being that loose in side control, someone is just going to lay there and not defend by pulling their arm out?

His technique is horrible at worst, and sloppy at best quite frankly.

  • @HalfGuardMike ok, i got it, you just don't know what to say or you're trying to break someone reputation for personal reasons.

It's obvious that noone is just going to stay there and let someone execute a submission hold on him, what you see in EVERY video is the "how to do it in normal situation", then you have to be able to adapt the pure tecnique to every situation... but that is something you would knew if you were actually a fighter and not just a hater.

  • @suicide977

It just shows that you are blindly being led by the blind.

Google Ari's name. Type it into Sherdog, The UG, or Bullshido and see what comes up. Or just watch Ari's own videos of his most recent tournament.

Or ask him why he decides to train in Idaho with Keith Owen, when there is a Carlson Gracie BB less than 5 miles away from him!!! Same reason why he wore a BB in his early videos. Same reason why he paid for his Blue Belt, and his Purple "Shirt". Because hes a fraud.

  • @HalfGuardMike leading by what? i don't even know him, we don't even live in the same continent, if you don't know what to say just shut up.

Again, back up your words, show us a video when you, the self proclaimed greatest fighter in the world, teach us where you are right and other people wrong, if you don't show proof you're just babbling nonsense.

  • @HalfGuardMike more like halfguarddike

  • works. but only with rules.

  • I've just seen Renzo pull this move out, tapping Mo Smith. Old fight, but hadn't seen it yet.

  • once your left leg's behind his head you can roll forward over your right shoulder (taking him with you) and get an omo plata on him. nice.

  • Gratci, I will use this in my next session....or atleast attempt it

  • the only way i could see this video or any of your videos getting better is if you demonstrate with your opponent actively resisting.

keep the videos coming guys i watch them before and after my BJJ classes.

  • that triangle was sick, that's defenitely gonna come in handy.

  • I had a guy in this position but neither did I choke him nor did he tap. I guess it depends on your physique if it works

  • @antistyler i'd say that if u couldn't choke him then use the triangle more as a way to keep him down and focus harder on breaking the arm for the submission

  • I think that because the triangle can only be attempted when the opponents arm is in between ur leg you should have started with getting the arm there? vitor belforts old techniques video had a really good way of getting the arm for this submission

  • WOW gonan try to attempt this tonight! Thanks Subs101

  • wow. fantastic

  • good technique

  • I shall try this XD

  • You guys are The Man. Thanks for posting so many different videos. They're all helpful in some way.

  • he says "its one of my favorite submissions" in every video

  • nope...I don't because they aren't all my favorites ;-)

  • i was joking. but its hard to pull off half this shit when the person you're grappling with is stronger or more expierienced

  • That is why you need to drill, drill, drill and be better than your opponent. Of course an inexperienced guy isn't going to be able to do many moves in jiu jitsu. You need a base to build on. The better you get, the more options are available to you.

  • thanks for the advice

  • @Submissions101 I'm a 14 year old kid and when I roll with adults a lot of them muscle out of my moves. How can I prevent that?

  • @ToXicFinish get stronger

  • @ToXicFinish not sure 'get stronger' is the greatest answer... obviously it'd help but the trick is conservation of energy... dont muscle against them... go with it and move .. if you cant move them.. move yourself :)

  • @OGskater223 Actually I find that using jiu jitsu, if you understand the mechanics of the moves you can quite easily submit a person who is alot stronger than you... that does mean that you need to outsmart them though. Most moves dont require a great deal of strength to be effective.

  • @OGskater223 well demian maia beat gonzaga in a jiu jitsu match, and gonzaga is like 50 lbs heavier than him, so technique does beat strength most times. but i agree, strength and power is essential when your grappling against a same level grappler as yourself. cos you will have an advantage

  • @OGskater223 yup. i roll a few times a week and 90% of the guys are larger than i am.technique goes along way. go slow take ur time learn what you are doing. great vid! thanks

  • @OGskater223

doing ANYTHING against someone who is better experienced AND stronger isnt going to win you the fight, you've gotta be more experienced and stronger than him, so train yo butt off

  • @OGskater223 no not really the kid i faced when practicing was way more experienced and it was my first day, i pulled off quite a few moves like the scorpion crunch aand tapped him out, but he tapped me out with an armbar.

  • @magicdude814 ur school is shit

  • @SlingShotEllington45 come on down to our school.

  • @OGskater223 Honestly, step through with your right leg (assuming the same side as the video) to the judo position, then trap the arm thru your legs before you step over with the left leg while lifting the head. I use this move VERY often, one of my favorites... and I find its one the moves that actually works best with a larger foe.

  • wow this is a very good technique. Iam going to try this if i can react fast enough

    for the next tournament.

  • @Submissions101 Do you need the arm in there for the triangle, or can you lock your legs around the head by itself?

  • @timshin81 You need the arm for the triangle choke, though without the arm there is a neck crank from this position.

  • after the triangle instead of the arm bar i could get a kimura right?

  • nice move, but if he can't talk loud enough, how is he going to tap lol

  • I know it was a joke, but that can damn well happen. He should tap with his feet. lol

  • i tried this, and i couldnt get the tap,how do u get the choke, when he's defending by putting his elbow down to the ground

  • fantastic video. I use this one and the many others you show all the time (the classes I take at home do not teach rubber guard). A small request though. Could you not both wear black rash guards... it just makes it a little hard to see at times. Great video though!

  • James:

Typically we don't wear the same color as I make it a point to have contrast. Drop the ball on this video ;-). Sorry buddy.

  • The key here is don't let him sit up on you, so moving down towards his legs and making sure you keep balance is probably a lot more important than getting too greedy with a weak inverted arm bar.

  • I would say that is also though the inverted arm bar helping you stay balanced and work for both.

  • man, this is such an awesome move, i wld have never have thought of this one hahaha, can't wait to give this a go.

    thanks!.

  • I pulled this off in class tonight!

I didnt get the armbar though because he tapped right away from the triangle XD

    super sneaky move!!

  • even if he bridges, as long as the triangle is locked in he's still trapped, no?

  • this is so sick!

I wish i could make it to your Chicago seminar in March... :(

  • Is there a reason you do both? Does a triangle from that position not apply enough pressure? Or are you merely showing us more options?

  • options...the triangle is enough to finish someone off;-)

  • not only options but when your in a fight trying to breath is key. most people have a hard time breathing because they freak out with when one submission is being attempted on them. With two you scare your opponent into wild breaths and disable three parts of their body that could otherwise being hurting you.

  • can you go for an ankle lock in this position also??...like a triangle/ankle lock, instead of the armbar/triangle??

  • I did this today.. but didnt do the dual, just the triangle choke from side control :)

  • I gotta try this one :D Thanx bro

  • OH MY GOD! I *MUST* Try this. THANK YOU. I've always had trouble with submissions from side. THANKS!

  • Wow..very nice! I'll definitely have to try that move the next time I'm in side control..

  • 0:56 epic!!=D

  • this one is very good.

people are getting informed and are aware of triangle choke. this one is sneaky and great for poeple who like to work on top.

  • Yeah man mere knowledge of the triangle's existence makes one a lot better at defending it.

That, or you have no idea what you're talking about.

  • i always use both on my partner cuz u never knw they might somehow get out of it so it's better to get the tap before they r out

  • It gets tighter if you squeeze your knee's together while u make everything tighter and raise the triangle. Some people pull the arm in the triangle, but i don't know if that helps. I noticed it's a lot easier to do on bigger guys or guys of the same size. Smaller guys tend to slip or wiggle out somehow

  • nice. got to try this sometime

  • i was able to pull this choke when my partner tried to pass my guard to side control, so i just hooked my right leg on his neck and locked it, but i couldn't get him to tap, so when he tried to pry out the triangle i ended up sweeping him to the mount with the triangle still in place! Freaking great submission! you guys help out a lot of people seriously!!! thanks SUBMISSIONS 101! YOU GUYS ROCK!

  • Nice move. As you step over his head, the opponent will naturally sit up so your leg should slip under his head easily, right? Will try tonight.

  • You guys must not be doing something wrong. I have landed this on a high level BJJ Brown and he couldn't get out even though he had 30 lbs on me. We rolled all around until he finally tapped.I didn't even use the armbar. If done correctly it is much tighter than a traditional triangle.

  • Damn that must have flet good. Well, not for the brown belt.

  • @milehighrage Don't you automatically get a brown belt for submitting a brown belt...in the case that you were a lower belt.

  • @tasmania105 do it consistently to someone in your own weight class that has a brown belt...

  • I tried this today, and I don't know what my partner did with his arm, but I guess he slipped it out somehow.

Still got him with a scissor choke though.

    Good choke to use.

  • that move is very painful

  • oh im so gonna try this! your vids to me are like crack to a hobo. thank you.

  • the choke does'nt work everytime. It depends on the person. you have a better chance with the armbar. Once you have the head locked up you pretty much have the win.

  • if you sit it will put more presure??

  • watch Georges St Pierre use this exact submission on Matt Hughes in UFC 79, he finishes with the armbar. Pure class!

  • sick shit

  • I have won three tournaments with this move alone...thankyou thankyou thankyou thankyou....everytime i use it i get alot of compliments and they all belong to you..thanks from Russell @ Cleber JiuJitsu

  • Russ:

Where are the VIDEOS??? We'd love to see them!

  • i think i only have one on film from my girlfriends camera phone..its the ends when i get the tap...one variation that i use most of the time and find quite helpful is that i go for the kimora on the free arm and rollback.my opponent thinks hes getting the advantage by getting off his back but by the time i land on my butt they are already tapping...should i send the video to you directly?

  • You should always video your matches for future reference! just you tube it if it is good quality.

  • Totally working this in next time I have side control in a bout.

  • That's Jiu jitsu!

  • damn!i love this submission!

  • Kimura's are hard enough to get from side control. Especially with your legs all tied up like that. Key locks are form more common, though you can sub someone out with a Kimura by swapping the position of your legs so that you can lean back without falling over and letting him up.

  • holy shit imma use this move tonight

  • Sweet jeebers! Leave him SOMETHING to tap out with! :O

  • This is an awesome position. I slightly kicked a guy in the face at pan ams going for this triangle. It was JJMachado who made me fall in love with the inverted armbar.

  • your the master! i'm learning a shed load of you guys! big up ya selfs!

  • nice move!

  • i read on one the comments below that u can use a kimura (we call that a "ninja" kimura) but is it possible to apply an EFFECTIVE keylock or americana

  • If The Opponent Somehow Gets Their Arm Out Of The Inverted Triangle Would Falling Back Into The Normal Armbar Be A Suffice Counter?

  • I would keep my position, especially if I had the triangle.

  • just switch off to a kimura

  • Instead of the armbar, could you do a kimora as well?

  • Sure.

  • from side control the triangle inverted armbar is easier to do...now if u were on ur back kimoras with the triangle r really easy as long as u know what ur doin

  • that was wicked deadly... imagine that in a street fight, if you don't know your ground game, you're pretty much owned...

  • sweet...thanks for the sickness as usual submissions101....

  • sweet.. tried this today and it worked!

  • stupid question, what does BJJ or BJG stand for?

  • BJJ= Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

BJG= Brazilian Jiujitsu Gear (my buddies company that sells some wicked tees...reproots dot com)

  • I wish they would do some spider guard moves. Spider guard is awesome!

  • Glad I found these vids.. I'm new to BJJ (3 mnths)..but totally ADDICTED... :) thx

  • hey man good for you, hope you stick with it

  • you know?i bet if you were fighting someone who doesnt know that move, they probrably would raise their head up on their own out of instinct, tryin to get up. i love it lol

  • haha thats true!

  • man i wish the arm triangle mid-move transitions like i love dual submission. there's only one i know of The andaconda vice its the americana and arm triangle together.

  • THIS IS GENIUS...i luv u man!!!

  • thats also known by the guy on the bottom as oh shit this is gonna hurt position

  • the twentieth person to rate

  • lol, you barely leave him a limb a tap out with.

  • Ezekiel Choke... please? ^^'

  • We have a couple up already.

    cheers

  • Can you do the Ezekiel Choke without the Gi?

  • yes, you can. can do it from the top or bottom of guard and of course, the mount. Ari, I don't remember any Ez chokes, gi or no gi, you sure?

  • yep...we have 2 up on our main site under the choke section. Also, our Lights Out DVD featured some also.

  • Yeah, I've seen those but they're both Gi chokes. I can't get it right without the Gi so I'd really use your help. You're the expert, you know. :P

  • Hotora86:

While there are Ezekiel Chokes without the gi (sometimes called Hell chokes), the can be tougher to get (it's just one of those chokes that work well with a gi. I would suggest a knuckle choke (which we'll put up in about a week for you).

    cheers

    Ari Bolden

  • Thanks very much Ari!

  • Nice!! Robin gracie finished me with this technique at a seminar! search for "Robin vs Joergus" (minute 1:05)

  • love when you put a slow-mo in

  • Good tip on going south; I usually get bucked off or just lose the position when I try this... probably why.

  • As always I totally appreciate your videos and the knowledge you share!

  • i will remember that one.....heh heh

  • hey thanks so much for all the great info...its a blessing that you love jiu jitsu so much that youre willing to teach the world your vast arsenal and not be money motivated...keep them coming because theyre working...god bless

  • Another excellent video. My repertoire of submissions from side control is pretty limited, so it's good to have more options like this.

  • I knew this move existed somewhere. thnx alot!

  • thats genius.

  • maybe u could show a closer grip on the inverted armlock? it's a little hidden. i think some zoom-ins would be really cool.

  • No problem..we'll do a video on the invert armlock by itself

  • This is a pretty cool sub, I'm just wondering if there are any escapes to it?

  • yep...tap!

  • ha ha ha..i have a neck crank, its actually a seated neck crank, I call it tha SuperJoe Neck crank...When we roll, one asked how do u escape? I smiled..took my mouth piece out, and said..Tap foo!! ( in a Mr-T 'esk voice)

  • I like to finish with a kimura from that position. :)

  • Triangle choke + arm bar + serious fight = not a good day for the guy on the receiving end :) awesome vid yet again.

  • that is an awesome move.

  • nice....i like it

  • great video

  • Yet again a great vid from 101, helped my techniques for fights no end.

  • reverse triangle not good enough huh? gotta secure with an arm bar.. tsk tsk.. haha

    good post.

  • Chris Lytle won vs Jason Gilliam at UFC 73 via this submission.

  • is that not a keylock?

  • It was an inverted armbar.Chris went for a keylock first but that wasn't working so he shifted to an inverted armbar.
