In his Slap Interview Frankie said this part was filmed after he injured his knee- He filmed this whole part skating with a torn ACL & MCL that's pretty gnarly.
Crazy. I remember seeing him for the first time and I had never seen anyone do gaps the size he did. Sure, he may be a little stiff in this vid, but a serious knee injury effects everything. I have two slightly torn acl's and I have to work hard at keeping them strong and relaxing so that i'm not overly stiff. I don't always succeed. The fact that he skated as well as he did in this vid, back then, when technology wasn't as far along in treatment as it is now, is nothing short of amazing.
Since he filmed this after his catastrophic knee injury, it's amazing that he even had this much amazing footage to put a full part together. Street pioneer and legend. Still an inspiration and will be as long as skateboarders can recognize the heart motivating the board. I'm proud to say Frankie Hill is my hero.
He does some insanely hard stuff here but this vid was a real bummer. He is so robotic and sketchy compared to how he used to be. In the old Powell vids, he could come close to falling off his board but make it look really smooth. This just looks like Tony Hawk - tall and lanky.
ive always wondered, what was the benefit or riding 35 or 38mm wheels? Is it easier to do tech flip tricks? Maybe the board doesnt have to be popped as high up???
@talktal Me neither, I never heard from him again after the late 80s powell videos. But then during this era I didnt pay much attention to Powell anymore.
my opinion only the best street skater then. could still pull his own now easy. double 360 flip on a good set with the 10 inch board i have on my wall. some get some new footage on here soon,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Don't get me wrong, he was sick for the time and revolutionary and i watch this video hundreds of times, but pull his own now? He approaches everything very slow, nothing is done fakie, switch, nollie, and 75% of the time he cracks tricks off and rides away sloppy. Pulling that one he did over a speed bumb is done by every talented 12 year old these days bro.
Sctechy ? trying to land a trick with the boards and wheels we had at that time... was near impossible. I rember i didn't like this time of big changing in skateboard. board were always broken on a 3 steps ollie.
nice backside flip over the pyramid.. double varial flip, pressure flips, 360 doubleflip..very normal stuff for '92. Some of his landings are so sketchy I wonder why they didn't re-film
i skated with frankie back in 93 or 94.. he was my idol, but ive always said... he got the sloppiest landings ever!!... this video brings awesome memories!! thanks for posting!
i remember when we used to call sketchy landing a "frankie hill"

That backside double flip over the pyramid was gnarly and surprisingly smooth.

tech tricks are easier with them because it causes you to hit your tail earlier.
gnardog1 2 years ago
what do you mean hit your tail earlier? you mean get your foot back on the tail earlier?

@gnardog1 i hit your moms tail earlier

@wasr10a you could also ask what the benefit of wearing size 50 pants was. It was style, and it was what it was.
