thank you for the clarification. the concern i have is that the time spent drilling what appears to be school students in arabic quran recitation could be more productively spent elsewhere, if this is not a public school and this is being done on the students off days, not a problem. but if arabic quran recitation is qualifiying as their education, then it looks really bad. the student shown in the video was amazing nonetheless.
my concern is knowing that hargeisa was known to have two universities, very good secondary schools and teachers who were mainly educated before 1991, that islamic fundie influence is growing and i believe that we can agree that they are no friends of education other than madrasah studies which do not prepare students for being productive members of the modern world.

I had 6 years primary school education in Arabic & Islamic studies. English was introduced as second language in preparatory 7th. 8th. year. I sat for secondary school entrance exams. in English and later sat for Cambridge University GCEs & came out with 8 passes. I am now a retired electronics engineer. What's wrong with teaching our siblings their religion. It's better than brain washing

i would consider that the majority of people who would have even watched this illuminating video likely have the same delusional beliefs as the person who posted it and feel that these somali children's educational needs are best served by memorizing religious verses in a foreign language, so negatives outnumbering positives is obvious. can someone tell me if this was in a public school or a madrasah?

thank you for the clarification. the concern i have is that the time spent drilling what appears to be school students in arabic quran recitation could be more productively spent elsewhere, if this is not a public school and this is being done on the students off days, not a problem. but if arabic quran recitation is qualifiying as their education, then it looks really bad. the student shown in the video was amazing nonetheless.

my concern is knowing that hargeisa was known to have two universities, very good secondary schools and teachers who were mainly educated before 1991, that islamic fundie influence is growing and i believe that we can agree that they are no friends of education other than madrasah studies which do not prepare students for being productive members of the modern world.

i am not required to be knowledgable of islam, nor should anyone. quran, bible studies, torah classes or any other flavor of diety worship recruiting material should not be in a public school, nor should madrasah schools ever replace public schools but rather, they can supplement the religious instruction the parents feel is right, but not in a public school. my point here. i want that these, and all kids should have a decent secular education. push the god worship on them outside of school.
