This was a joint training mission between the Seals the Marines. The Seals are in the boats and the Marines were supposed to fast rope down onto the deck of the ship. Something happened and the pilot touched down. His left rear gear fouled the railing and when he appliied power the bird flipped onto its back. Several Marines drowned because of the heavy packs they were carrying.

I've seen many helicopters landing and takeoff especailly naval ones. The Sea King(UK origin) Helicopters are the most difficult to manage and fly but yet the pilots dont try to smart around. Here in this video one clearly sees that what is going on in the pilot's mind.

This Ch-46 Seaknight accident happened Dec. 9, 1999 with 18 people on board, crashed while attempting to land on the Navy tanker PECOS during a training exercise. The chopper's landing gear apparently snagged a metal safety net and the helicopter flipped over into the water and sank. Eleven Marines were rescued by SEALS on two nearby boats. But six Marines and a sailor drowned, their bodies recovered later from the sunken wreckage by an unmanned submersible vehicle.
