Stephanie J. Block, Idina Menzel, and Eden Espinosa are my three favorites, for different reasons. Each puts her own slightly different spin on the role. For me, SJB is the best, but that's really just a style preference. To me, her voice sounds well supported. She's using healthy vocal technique on a killer song that's easy to scream/oversing, and she just strikes me as the most elegant Elphaba.

Not idina. Everyone thinks she was the best because she is the most well-known. She hardly ever did any riffs and compared to some of the others, she is just plain. I like Stephanie and teal.

Kerry and Lisa, while their voices are beautiful were probably the least emotionally involved in the moment, although since some of the videos were quite blurry that could be a false statement lol

Nope, the never-heard Kerry Ellis is far from being better than anyone in this role. Like Idina Menzel, or Glee's Lea Michelle for that matter, Ellis' voice sounds very SQUEAKY. If Idina is Alvin the Chipmunk and Lea Michelle Minnie Mouse, then Kerry Ellis is Donald Duck.

This wasn't Idina's best, but everyone has their days. She is probably my favorite overall and not because she was the original. My favorites were Kerry and Eden based on this video, but they were all amazing. Especially, because they had to do this 8 times a week and still sound good. And I wanna give a special mention to Eden who decided to tour after her Broadway run and is currently touring.

But remember guys, they didn't make the show Wicked for us to judge our Elphabas...they made it so we could see these amazing women preform this play. While it's fun to critique, don't be so rough on these Elphies. (I've sung defying gravity before, it's rough) But anyway, Idina and Jackie. <3

I have preached time and time again, it's not for us to judge, it's not for us to pretend like we know these incredible women just by watching pirated videos. Anyone who sings this song is my hero, and anyone who can do it eight shows a week is my hero. I'm hopefully seeing Jackie in February, but I will be thrilled to see Mariand or Carla. I win any which way it goes.

After watching both parts, and also watching a lot of the other clips, my vote would have to go to Idina. Not just because of this 1 song, but the entire performance for the whole show. Both here and in London, she puts her heart and soul into the role. Plus, being able to do all the songs while dealing with asthma is just unreal. Her perfomance at the Tony award's while having and asthma attack is unreal. Would love to see her perform wiked again so i can go see her.

If you make another "competition," you should consider Mandy Gonzalez. I saw her performing live...and wow, I got so many chills and tears. She was absolutely wonderful :D

She was the original standby. Ana Gasteyer was original Elphaba in the Chicago Cast. Kristy took over after Ana left, and then Dee took over after Kristy. Hope that cleared it up for you. :) ( And I hope that doesn't sound rude...)
Well, Kerry, Idina, Stephanie and Cassie all shine, and I've seen wicked 3 times this year, with only one of those girls, once...twice I saw it with Standby Ashleigh Gray who should be on that list because she's better than most, shame you can only catch her on a wednesday!!
The biggest surprise for me was Julie Reiber, who I found to be particularly amazing. Stephanie J. Block, who I'm not the biggest fan of, gave me chills and Sho's AHHHHHHH was incredible.

Actually there are videos were Idina has hit the high F. Why don't you search for her December 27, 2007 performance. She hits that note pretty damn good!
And not EVERYONE thinks she's amazing! But that doesn't mean she isn't! She is quite phenomenal live, and if you haven't seen her there's really no room for you to talk. Videos and Audios NEVER do a live performer justice!
@TonyWilliams1988 I've heard/ seen Idina live, but not in Wicked. :( I wish I could've. She's amazing, but she never sounds really good on DG, except for maybe one recording and the OST. And, December 27, 2007? Is that another live performance because she left Wicked on January 9, 2005. I searched for it, but it's Stephanie J. Block singing on Broadway. And she does hit the F. Not just hits, but holds. :) Idina is amazing. But with DG, she's just okay.

eden is just crazy good. sho can riff super well, i think julia is amazing, but not good as elphie. dee is just wonderful. who is the first one on the 'me down' section?? i think lisa makes a BEAUTIFUL elphie! sjb makes it look like a walk in the park!

End Note: Kerry Ellis hits it perfectly & holds it longer than she normally does it seems like.
I'm sorry to everyone who loves her.. I personally.. just can't even bare the sound of julia murney's voice. lol. I'm sorry it's just.. wow. ha. i'm pretty sure i hear people like.. laugh in the video section of here doing the end note.. ha. just saying.

I think they're all brilliant, tbh. See, is it just me, or is Idina brilliant...in everything OTHER than the very last moments of Defying Gravity? She has the best belt, but when it gets to that point it's like she gets uncomfortable with it? It's a shame, since she's so good otherwise. But I think they're all very talanted women. <3 I admire them :3

honestly after the first few they all start to sound the same.
i have no idea who the first girl was but i liked her a lot. i also like ana gasteyer - i dont care what anyone says, she's good, maybe not the best, but good, and understands acting very well.

Idina Menzel is my favorite :) Then Eden Espinosa, and then Stephanie J. Block :) They're all really good, actually, but no one is better than Idina <3!

Why is Idina not amazing me at all in this? Her, Eden and Shoshana were my faves, but it sounds like Idina can't do anything to their full potential.

If you make another "competition," you should consider Mandy Gonzalez. I saw her performing live...and wow, I got so many chills and tears. She was absolutely wonderful :D
By the way, thank you for doing this! It makes hearing from different performers so convenient and fun! I revere them all!

She was the original standby. Ana Gasteyer was original Elphaba in the Chicago Cast. Kristy took over after Ana left, and then Dee took over after Kristy. Hope that cleared it up for you. :) ( And I hope that doesn't sound rude...)

Well, Kerry, Idina, Stephanie and Cassie all shine, and I've seen wicked 3 times this year, with only one of those girls, once...twice I saw it with Standby Ashleigh Gray who should be on that list because she's better than most, shame you can only catch her on a wednesday!!

The biggest surprise for me was Julie Reiber, who I found to be particularly amazing. Stephanie J. Block, who I'm not the biggest fan of, gave me chills and Sho's AHHHHHHH was incredible.

never ever (except on the recording). and yet EVERYONE thinks she's SOO amazing and SOO better than all the others who CAN hit the high note every time (Willemijn Verkaik, for instance, who should have been in this vid)

Actually there are videos were Idina has hit the high F. Why don't you search for her December 27, 2007 performance. She hits that note pretty damn good!

And not EVERYONE thinks she's amazing! But that doesn't mean she isn't! She is quite phenomenal live, and if you haven't seen her there's really no room for you to talk. Videos and Audios NEVER do a live performer justice!

@TonyWilliams1988 I've heard/ seen Idina live, but not in Wicked. :( I wish I could've. She's amazing, but she never sounds really good on DG, except for maybe one recording and the OST. And, December 27, 2007? Is that another live performance because she left Wicked on January 9, 2005. I searched for it, but it's Stephanie J. Block singing on Broadway. And she does hit the F. Not just hits, but holds. :) Idina is amazing. But with DG, she's just okay.

Idina was the original Elphaba in London from September 2007-December 2007. There are lots of performances of her on YouTube.

@TonyWilliams1988: Agreed. The real experience can NEVER rival an audio or video recording. It brings a whole new level to the singer and the audience. Besides, everyone has good and bad days...the singer's talent cannot be captured within one video...so technically, everyone is amazing. :D
