If you read the book, it's a great story of her obsession with the Chairman. But you also wonder if she realized the kindness and loyalty of Nobu as she became older. He didn't like geisha at all, but he protected her when no one else, not even the Chairman, did. Great story on so many levels. Just hate all the negative press in Japan because the author was foolish enough to name the retired geisha who gave him so much help. Hope geisha doesn't die out as an art - it's a real treasure.

I often wonder if maybe the chairman didn't offer her protection becuase he knew of Nobu's feelings for her. I read the autobiography of the geisha whose brain the author picked for this book, and while I ultimately liked Memoirs better, (who wouldn't, its a fairy tale) its endearing in its own right.

The man who wrote this book wrote it based on a little teeny bit of what Mineko Iwasaki, Whom he interviewed, told him. Then he published lies. As a retaliation she wrote her own book. "Geisha of Gion" This is the real story...Now, I'm not saying this book wasn't good, and that I didn't like the movie, but all must understand that it is complete fabrication. Just...FYI.

wtf, Japanese people never abused kids like that. They might punish them by making them do tons of chores, but they never hit them or splash cold water on them.

This movie was pretty bad. I was actually excited to see it cause I thought it'd show the beauty of Geisha, but wtf? The makeup they showed was completely wrong, the hair...what was up with that? This was such a disgrace to real Geisha that live in Japan.
