The F-22 is not a prototype, it's already been deployed at several USAF bases, like Nellis, Eglin, Langley, Hickam and Elmendorf. It's already out there mate.
RSA ordered 28 of these, it has been in development by SAAB since 1982 and the frist one rolled out in 1987. They are releativly cheap 30 million USD. Nice thing is these aircraft are designed to land on short runways and roads. Its more a peace keeping aircraft than anything else.

Well it's a bit harder to pick up the gripen becouse it's alot smaller than a big ass F-22. It does not have better stealth though. But it have a radar that can't be jammed by any kind of jammer operational today. The F-22 can hold about 10 AAM missiles inside it's hull though wich make it alot stealthier than a gripen bristling with weaponry xD

AusGamingCentral dude, The griffin is smaller than the F-22, Eqaul to, it has a smaller turning radius. tho the F-22 has its Turningengines or what you call it. So its kinda eqaul there. And if the Eurofighters has taken down a F-22 Raptor on training exersice with its ASEA Radar Then the Griffin NG (Has the radar) is fully capabal of it. The Raptor Is faster, but Think Griffin is a F good plane for that low cost! So the griffin isnt bad.
The Gripen might not be a 5th gen just yet but they're working on it, besides, I would not count it out against anything, they're like the most adaptable jet out there.
If the F-22s radar is capable to detect them yes, they might find the F-22 a bit of a challenge, but during "Red Flag Alaska" and "Red Flag Italy" the Gripen was more or less invicible for the opponents radars.
@onlypeaceindeath There's never been such a thing as Red Flag Italy, and I've personally talked with a Swedish pilot that's been in Red Flag Alaska, they never went up against any F-22's. They only flew together with them and it would take a NG (E/F) EASA radar to be able to detect a F-22 at close range.

Although, Gripen is without any doubt the safest, easiest and cheapest fighter to buy, costing almost 1/2 as much in maintenance and to fly as the nearest competitor. It's the best choice the SAF could have maid, buying the worlds cheapest but most effective 4.5 generation fighter jet. F-16's, F18's, MiG-29's/35's or Eurofighters would have been almost twice as expensive.

F 35 is a verry good airplane. But there is a price issue as well. South africa got a good deal on the gripen aircraft 100 % counterbuys in South african industri for exampel.

Sorry to bring bad news but as nice as the ATLAS Cheeta is, it is old technology and an old mirage design, SAAB is very progressive and a lot can be done with the gripen and up dates can be preformed easily.....you should be happy withn the Gripen.
We are buying these OLD model aircraft because Denel after being "reorgenised" (post 94) does not have the capacity to devel craft anymore. The liberal politics in south africa thought it best to disgard our arms development (lotsa money making). Also mismanagement played a huge role in it. All that could be done with the Mirage III design was done a long time ago. The design was milked completely, just like what's going on with the F-16 now.
Quite frankly, you'd have to build fresh airframes to make any upgrade meaningful and I suspect all the Mirage III toolings and jigs were cut up for scrap ages ago.
South Africa made a good decision with the Gripen, any country that can afford modern machinery to protect itself with should have it.

Gripen is designed as a semi short takeoff and landing aircraft and because of this it has exceptional maneuverability and can operate on anything from public roads to bush airstrips.

The F-35 is still in development, it will be several years before it's ready, it think it's scheduled for 2011. And several nations have plans for buying the F-35, Turkey for example approved the purchase of 100 F-35 not long ago. a few other nations that might order the F-35: UK Norway Denmark Australia Canada Israel Netherlands Italy

AusGamingCentral dude, The griffin is smaller than the F-22, Eqaul to, it has a smaller turning radius. tho the F-22 has its Turningengines or what you call it. So its kinda eqaul there. And if the Eurofighters has taken down a F-22 Raptor on training exersice with its ASEA Radar Then the Griffin NG (Has the radar) is fully capabal of it. The Raptor Is faster, but Think Griffin is a F good plane for that low cost! So the griffin isnt bad.

The Gripen might not be a 5th gen just yet but they're working on it, besides, I would not count it out against anything, they're like the most adaptable jet out there.

If the F-22s radar is capable to detect them yes, they might find the F-22 a bit of a challenge, but during "Red Flag Alaska" and "Red Flag Italy" the Gripen was more or less invicible for the opponents radars.

@onlypeaceindeath There's never been such a thing as Red Flag Italy, and I've personally talked with a Swedish pilot that's been in Red Flag Alaska, they never went up against any F-22's. They only flew together with them and it would take a NG (E/F) EASA radar to be able to detect a F-22 at close range.

@Ghoulza well to be fair, 2 Gripen 39C went up against 7 F-16's during red flag and took them all down. During the Loyal Arrow exercise in Sweden, 1 "Bandit" Gripen went up against 3 F-15's and took two down before the last one fled.

@wellerocks I would love to watch that... won worrying thing is, I've seen our pilots, all 9 quilified of them.... we have order, I think 28 of these? but only have 9 trained pilots!!!!! plus been told we can only afford to to haveless than half the needed trainer hours per years..... greta plane... but if you cant keep it in the air and cant keep the pilots trained, it's not much use

@Ghoulza well that's true. Such a shame with BAE, always messing things up for the Swedish weapons manufacturers. Although, Gripen is without any doubt the safest, easiest and cheapest fighter to buy, costing almost 1/2 as much in maintenance and to fly as the nearest competitor. It's the best choice the SAF could have maid, buying the worlds cheapest but most effective 4.5 generation fighter jet. F-16's, F18's, MiG-29's/35's or Eurofighters would have been almost twice as expensive.

F 35 is a verry good airplane. But there is a price issue as well. South africa got a good deal on the gripen aircraft 100 % counterbuys in South african industri for exampel.

Sorry to bring bad news but as nice as the ATLAS Cheeta is, it is old technology and an old mirage design, SAAB is very progressive and a lot can be done with the gripen and up dates can be preformed easily.....you should be happy withn the Gripen.

We are buying these OLD model aircraft because Denel after being "reorgenised" (post 94) does not have the capacity to devel craft anymore. The liberal politics in south africa thought it best to disgard our arms development (lotsa money making). Also mismanagement played a huge role in it. Btw the cheetah isnt south african developed, its adapted. It is merely a modified french mirage. WE DO however have the rooivalk..which is NOT being used..

I think it will end in disaster. THe more wealth taken out from the forests lakes mines etc the more will go somewhere else, perhaps china. And in china they have 1 child per family policy. THat would do good in africa!Just push them to work more, and the flies and germs will do the rest! Having seen programs with africans not being able to make a waterpipe function, and especially not being able to use a shovel I cant see them having a future in the civilised soceity. the problem with africa, and africans in general, is they believe they are 'victims'. No failure it their own fault. They cannot take the blame for their own failure, and they cannot take the responsibility. But as long as the west keep on giving 'aid' to africa, things will stay the same. Aid must stop, so africa can get up and stand on its own feet. Until then, africa will ALWAYS go to every meeting with the west carrying a begging bowl. They rely on white guilt to survive. But I say: no more!

SA needs jobs and more police to fight rampant crime. It would have been much better for SA to develop a Cheetah 2. Updating and improving older designs is not as useless as some think.
If you give a Mirage III the latest radar, avionics and agile Sidewinders locked on by a Helmet mounted display that Mirage III is going to be a nightmare for anything. Older planes are not as agile but they have a lot of moves nonetheless.

All that could be done with the Mirage III design was done a long time ago. The design was milked completely, just like what's going on with the F-16 now.
Quite frankly, you'd have to build fresh airframes to make any upgrade meaningful and I suspect all the Mirage III toolings and jigs were cut up for scrap ages ago.
South Africa made a good decision with the Gripen, any country that can afford modern machinery to protect itself with should have it.

Gripen provides similar qualities that SAAF
needed in the Angola conflict where they performed well flying the Mirage F.1. at incredibly low altitudes.
I think the best choice for SA would have been to buy the Mirage 2000 or Tornado production line and develop a multi role "Cheetah 2". But I guess that just wasn't possible.

THe plane is perfect aerodynamicly for one motor.Perhaps a bit small for having long legs. The smallness is also a great advantage so the competitors always have problems of finding it in the sky nomatter close or far. The good software, radar and EWS makes it perhaps best in the world! We upgrade the software continuosly so its top of the art.We make it fly in excercises. Not as you americans always hiding inside american soil.We come to Red Flag: show your superior f-22 then!

Gripen is designed as a semi short takeoff and landing aircraft and because of this it has exceptional maneuverability and can operate on anything from public roads to bush airstrips.

I talked to some fighter pilots in Canada and they said Canada will probably get the F-18 E super hornet, not the JSF. The main concern was the lack of a 2nd engine in the JSF which is a problem in Canada because we have 3 oceans and most of our country is cold and remote.

Gripens maximum speed is actually pretty much the same as most modern fighters, the are several fighters which are faster then Gripen, for example F-15, J-10,MiG-29 and Su-27.
And the most manuverable fighters in the world would probably be the MiG-35,SU-37 and F-22, these aircrafts have thrust vectoring which gives them very good manuverability.

Sweden have an extremley poorly trained military.
It is designed for peace time operations and they would be totally confused if they ever had to fight in a real war. Many of the most basic military concepts does not even exist in Sweden.
