This film is real masterpiece of the 90's. I always wanted to see this movie and finally I did. Fantastic one!!! (just like the book). Sean Connery, Alec Baldwin, Scott Glenn, Sam Neill and others did a great job. Bart Mancuso was my favorite character but I really loved all of them

I prefer the book. It is totally diferent. SPOIULERS Jack never went on the Uss dallas, Davenport was whit him when he met greer, and no subs are sunk via torpedoes.

I also loved how they said in the beginning of the film that neither the United States nor Russia wants to admit this even happened. United States through claiming the Red October was destroyed (the missile hit the hull) gets the Red October and Russia is too embarrassed to admit that their other sub was sunk by its own missile. LOL!

I always thought that the character of Petty Officer Jones or "Jonesy" (the black dude) on the U.S.S. Dallas was the real star of this film. Figuring out that a reoccurring faint sound is actually a Russian sub was genius.

The character went on to appear in several of Clancy's later novels. I believe he leaves the Navy and helps to develop some new top-secret military technology.

I watched this a couple days ago, if you like suspensful military drama and action then youll probably like this movie. It has a good plot, although kind of disapointing since it gave no explanation for the ending (not going to tell what the ending is since i dont like giving away spoilers) Overall its a good movie based on an accual event, which we now know since the reports and documents were declassified a few years ago.
