maybe he's not as good as Carr, but nevertheless a) he wrote the tune and b) his voice is gorgeous too - we should stop always comparing one with the other, always telling others that this or that version is the definite one - there are so many brilliant musicians offering differing versions, all we have to do is listen and enjoy!
Zij hebben dit ook gedaan bij Jools Holland (BBC). Vergeet ook niet de fraaie uitvoeringen van Ry Cooder, ook in het bijzonder Ry Cooder live bij de BBC.
@RasMajnouni Actually, while Gram and Emmylou probably did the song together, I think the real alt.country standard of the song was Gram with the Flying Burrito Band, on the incredible "Gilded Palace of Sin" album. Percy Sledge also did a great version. Breathtaking song.
Perhaps THE greatest cheating song ever written. Dan and Spooner were mentors to me early on, and I love these guys. True soul... Dan sang a song I wrote called "That's Me" that can be found on Facebook and Reverbnation under Shane Wilson from Madison, AL.
Dan Penn is the genuine article. One of the greatest singers out there. If you ever have the good fortune to hear one of the demos from the early days (the demos that convinced so many wonderful artists to cut the tune), savor every second of it.
...were the original demos ever released???...I remember being around Chris Ethridge and Joel Scott Hill in the early to mid-70's,and they used to talk about Dan's demos all the time...Stevie Gurr...
the afghan whigs do a solid cover of this too

Spooner Oldham is one of the most talented musicians, as well as one of the nicest, down to earth people you will ever meet.

Really interesting to see how they treat the song. The James Carr version is the ultimate.
