I've always loved " Lassie" great clip, thanks for sharing this, I've recently made a video for a song called "Buy a Dog" check it out, you may like it. youtube.com/watch?v=2acYxdU-POw
A pity that DVDs of the entire series have not been released. I particularly liked the Tommy Rettig eps and the original theme music, "Secret of the Silent Hills."
i really miss all the good shows that use to come on when i was a child. it's so sad that my children will never really get to see these clean, wholesome shows.
Is there a kid today who would watch Geoff & Lassie? I suspect most of kids today are not capable of doing so. I asked my 2 granddaughters if they'd like to watch some Our Gang shorts. They said "Papaw we don't wanna watch those old movies." Well what can you say? Disappointed, yes; no connection to REAL human attributes; and always plugged-in, yes. Maybe I'm too judgemental but I feel that kids today have no sensibility.
This song touches me tremendously and stirs a childhood memory so much it's hard to believe. It takes me right back to being six years old. Beautiful but yet haunting. I LOVE HEARING IT AGAIN. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING.
this is when i first fell in love with collies....watching Timmy and Lassie -- i've had a collie in my life for over 40 years -- thanks for the memories!!!
My grandfather had a catering company that fed the crew on locations. Lassie was one of these and as a kid I used to go out on the Lassie show and played with Tommy Rettig on breaks. I thought he was cool because he was a year or so older than me, but my mom said he was a bit of a brat! Good actor though. I was sad when it became "Timmy and Lassie"
Jeff Miller was played by Tommy Rettig, who left the show in 1957 along with Jan Clayton, who played Jeff's mother. Timmy (played by Jon Provost) was adopted by the Martins (although for 1st season of the Martins, Mr. & Mrs. Martin were played by Jon Shepodd and Cloris Leachman).
Eric Knight, born in England April 10, 1897through January 15, 1943, at age 2 his father died in the Boer Wars, mother emigrated to St Petersburg, Russia became a governess to the Royal Family
later came to the USA. He lived in Pleasant Valley, Pennsylvania. Both auhors raised collies & based their stories on them. Terhune lived nearby in Wayne, New Jersey. The Terhune estate grounds remain. You'll see Lad's grave marker, along with the markers of many other dogs made famous in his books.
this is the original theme and the original Timmy was the best version of Lassie but the later version was good also. very few people know that Lassie was based on the book Lad, A Dog by Albert Payson Terhune written in 1919 most likely and a later book titled Lassie Come Home by Eric Knight,(probably inspired by Lad) movie version with Roddy McDowell in England 1943. both authors were US citizens. Lad a Dog is called the best dog book ever written by many.
The Lassie with Jeff was the best! That wimpering little Timmy practically stole Lassie from Jeff.........and that Lassie! She(he) was a little traitor!!!
jon provost and tommy redding used to live near me when i was a kid. i also loved to watch lassie and wanted collies. never had any but have had german sheps, aussies, coyotls, and a wolf malmute that was a gentle giant, a saint, and a prince. later i took care of weatherwax's dogs (lassies) at the vet hosp. i worked at. now i live in the woods and the dogs nearby come and we adventure together. lassie and rinty were a major inspiration.
Nice tribute in photos! Tommy Rettig died way too young, as did Roddy McDowall, Jan Clayton & Hugh Reilly. But thankfully we still have Jon Provost and June Lockhart with us, and all those wonderful films & programs with all the different dogs who played "Lassie."
I am greatful that you put this up,I grew up watching the reruns on Nickelodeon, and still to this day, I get teared up,out of joy, thanks again for putting this here.
That haunting whistle tune sounded alot like what I remember back in the early '60's, when I was just a boy and the lineup was Lassie, Dennis and Ed Sullivan.
I love Lassie, Rin Tin Tin and all dogs....and all animals...

Too many people confuse this theme music with "Greensleeves". It's obviously a different piece of music!

I remembered that "Greensleeves" was the Lassie theme. Looking back, I now see that it was just arguably derivative of Greensleeves.
