  • I have listened to this older version of how Joanna sings this song and how she sings it now, more recent. I like this version better and it kind of sucks that she cannot sing it like this now. Ever since she got nodules on her vocal cords and had to have something done about it (around 2006-2007) her voice is not the same. She has said herself that she cannot sing the way she used to, some songs are better now, some not.

  • "somewhere between bjork and a handbrake" - allmusic.com

she kills me, every fucking time.

  • First, let me say, Jools Holland is doing something that is special. He presents acts because they are brilliant not because they happen to be popular although sometimes the two things coincide.

Second, in my opinion Joanna's place in history is with Bjork, Dresden Dolls, Captain Beefheart, Frank Zappa. I don't mean to compare musically. I mean to compare uniqueness. A new sound, new poetry. Genius.

  • What is this book of which she speaks I hear myself ask: is it that book spoken of by Joe Strummer in his later years, of Redemption Song? A profoundly talented young lass, perhaps even in her lyrics more than her harp playing, to the cogniscenti no less than the villaine.

  • "do you want to ride on my back?"

    yes please

  • ROOOOOOOOTS!

  • what the flying fuck i don't even

  • brill

  • I love her muchly x

  • I'm not really keen on her voice but no doubt she is an beautiful musician!

  • why do people always start 'harping' on about other artists in comments. it's all a bit 'my dad's bigger than your dad'. grow up for fuck's sake. if someone likes mustard, you can't tell them they're wrong just because you prefer ketchup. only a very young child would think on that level.

  • @SquishedButterfly Yeah, but mustard is so much better than ketchup.

  • @Sh1ntoe on a ham sandwich yeah, but not a cheesburger and chips. hot dogs, I like both.

  • This really makes me want to go play tag with her...

  • they are different sounds but the voice manipulation is completely the same. cocorosie started way before this...thing started.

  • @chalice4ever What you say is not true. Both CocoRosie and Joanna Newsom started around 2002. And they don't differ that much. CocoRosie has a richer sound I think. Both are amazing though!! Yeah.. let's just leave it at that!

  • cocorosie just called...they want back their harp back and exact voice sound. pathetic bitch cant make her own sound

  • @chalice4ever Don't be dumb. Totally different sounds. And they began recording at the same time. And.. Grey Oceans was awful

  • @chalice4ever you chat air

  • @jakelake20 well you chat shit more than a toilet. dont message me again

  • @chalice4ever lolz

  • @chalice4ever Isn't it odd that Joanna Newsom's first record was released TWO YEARS PRIOR to CocoRosie's? Get your facts straight.

Not to mention Joanna is a hell of a lot more talented and creative.

  • @MrVoyaging DONT FUCKEN message me again. this bitch doesnt hold up a dime and two cents compared to cocorosie k...

  • @chalice4ever Lol even though CocoRosie took her entire image and sound, like you already said (since Joanna has been performing longer). Also I didn't message you I just replied to your [asinine] comment.

  • @chalice4ever Cocorosie fucking blows.

  • @uhwaykin. fuck off bitch. dont bother replying.

  • @chalice4ever Cocorosie is for crack babies.

  • I like her playing and lyrics a lot, but that ridiculous accent bothers me. Why not sing with your natural accent. Why feel the need to invent an accent that doesn't originate from anywhere? She sounds like a child mocking a singer.

  • @Stefandurrr yeah she did some kinda weird thing here. oddly enough this was the first version of this song or anything i'd ever heard of her. i knew there was some "awesome" in there so i tried again and struck gold lol

  • @Stefandurrr she doesn't actually have an accent here. in an interview she commented on how she has a lisp growing up which she try to suppress as much as she can. Over the years her voice has improved for sure, but it doesn't seem like she was ever really trying to be more eccentric than she needs to be

  • a lollaapaloooza chile !

  • I want Jools holland to narrate my life

  • Somebody is in her way whom she wants with her but she doesn't quite feel is adequate. She wants this person to know that she is a viking and capable of anything. I understand that she balances this with her skill in singing and playing the harp.. what I don't get is where this all leads. What is going on with this song?

  • divna! :)

  • The weird thing is, it seems to me from listening to a variety of her songs thru time, that she did not need to be singing in this odd and rather annoying fashion. I mean, apparently this voice is a bit of an act. How odd. I LOVE her songs. She's an amazing talent. But I'm not surprised that singing like this gave her vocal chords nodes. Listening to it makes my own throat hurt in sympathy. I have no problem with her "new" singing style. It makes the brilliance of her songs easier to appreciate.

  • I never really liked her voice, but fuck she's plays that harp so well :'D

  • Sorry, I don't get it.

  • Ma chanteuse pré " fée" rée...

  • she looks pretty old in this, isnt she only like 30?

  • @NuclearViagra She's 29, probably 25 or 26 in this.

  • @Crypticald thats what im sayin. And shes dating andy samberg! What foes he see in her?

  • wow everyone. I've always liked this song. but it's the first time i watch her perform it. she is so talented. thumbs up for musical talent!

  • i just found her because of the roots and i'm amazed!!! i never heard a grooving harp before. u need to get used to her voice, okay, but i think really good music always has something wierd about it, that u don't get the first (few) time(s) u hear it.

ah and i really like mixing the roots' cover in when she's done playing (overlapping the applause and the roots-intro). give it a try, it rocks! =)

  • Has been likened, by a friend of mine lately, as a cross between Niandra LaDes and Usually Just a T-Shirt era Junkie John Frusciante, and Neutral Milk Hotel. Loving both, I guess I can agree.

  • @HanumanLoki . Unique ass voice dip shit!

  • @xxx111Gd Well your "Unique" is my "Goofy". I like Goofy by the way, when she sings like this she reminds me of Bjork, To me, Bjork is really fucking goofy, doesn't mean I don't appreciate and listen to her music. I wonder what you'd believe my "Unique" to be.

  • @HanumanLoki . Surely if you appreciate her music you would have left a more encouraging comment? What if she read it and took it the wrong way? (Even though she probably gets it all the time off comments on the net and such!) What is your unique?

  • @crypticald not at all!

  • Yes the best version of this track i have seen loooove it so much........ Play this at my funeral please :-)

  • His voice, is unusual, ok. I get it (lol). And great songs.

  • Her voice has changed.I love her music,in the raw like this, with the band, and with her new voice. She's truly amazing, she remained silent for months, and had to regain her voice from the nodules she had to get surgery on.I admire her music, and her very much so.I hope she keeps making more music. <3

  • if ya make to it the end n u not feelin better about shit then ur need some love in ya cold, cold hearts x

  • why cant i find a person like her?

  • nothing i can say to describe that. so beautiful

  • truly original!

  • The thing I learned from Joanna (seeing this performance back when it aired) and later Daniel Johnston on The Rollins Show is to never judge a musician on first impressions. I was wrong on both counts and now love both of them and their work dearly.

  • she is outta this world for sure, i want to frolick with her in the land that she comes from

  • 51 people don´t know what a harp is...

  • shes a unicorn

  • i always forget how attractive joanna newsom is

  • @Buelligan88 you're crap.

  • I think Joanna and Bjork should do a duet

  • She killed her dinner with karate! SKILLZ

  • @JamesMajdali chuck norris couldn't even do that

  • she is magic.

  • @falexarzan why make a comment like that? not really understanding the motivation behind that unless you're crying out for attention. pathetic doesn't even give you justice

  • Why is she so beautiful in such a whimsical way. Her music does more than tell a story, it makes the listener feel, images turn into textures, words into spirits. its effect is intoxicating

  • @falexarzan

She probably gets a lot of credit for playing an unusual instrument but I've never heard anyone saying she's like the best in the world or anything

Hell I'll bet if the average person and 9 of their friends got together they couldn't name 1 mainstream artist that plays the harp

  • @falexarzan cool story bro. go fuck yourself.

  • absolutely sexy.

  • I might have a dim awareness of how hard it must be to play such completely different things with each hand... and then sing at the same time. That's enough for me to love listening to her. But then you have the really amazing lyrics.

Even if you don't care for her voice you still have to give it to the rest of the package. No band, no drums, guitar, bass, piano, backup singers, dancers, pyrotechnics. Just her and her talent really fills the stage.

  • I play the harp too and I'd be sooo thankful if someone could tell me where I can get the notes. pleeaaasse, if someone does know it.

  • @oHeide

I got your back.check your mail.

  • @oHeide

Google "JNTP". (stands for joanna newsom transcription prjoect) It should be the first result.

Tons of her songs are transcribed on that site into printable PDF's, including book of right-on. I'm learning Esme right now. :)

  • i play the harp, wish i was as good as her

  • Her voice is so freakin cute

  • The guy at the beginning is named Joanna Introduceom.

  • she kinda has a reggae style voice. makes me want a harp

  • Okay not to say anything about her style of singing or anything but, to me at least, she sounds a bit possessed. Anyone notice @4:02

  • what's with the metronome?

  • Joanna you are an Angel x Joy and Beauty always x Panda B

  • Joanna, you are an agel...x

  • She is truly divine.

  • interesent voice she`s a talent

  • She's so beautiful. I LOVE HER!! Although I am a girl..... I think she would be my soul mate. Haha. I'm not even a lesbian.

  • or, if ever I have a harp, I'm buying her a daughter!

  • @whiteej21

Listen to her newest stuff, and her live shows from this year. Like '81, Bridges and Balloons etc. Those have her more natural voice.

Basically, what I was getting at is that most people don't make their voice sound "childy" with the lisp/speech impediment. I understand that singers change their voice to some extent, but not to this extent. If a person listened to this with no background, they wouldn't assume it was a 30yo american. Regardless, it's over now. Leave it be.

  • @whiteej21

I've said it's over. Stop draggin it on. The question wasn't that rediculous. I've got an answer to the question, it's done. Leave it alone.

  • Comment removed

  • @whiteej21

Well you guys are blowing this way out of proportion. I meant nothing by it. Like I said before, it just baffles me how different her singing voice if from her speaking voice. Chill out folks. This got out of hand, clearly there were miscommunications... sorry for the trouble.

  • @whiteej21

Few singers have such a drastic change from speaking to singing voice. Also, I stated that I'm starting to like it. Don't put words in my mouth.

And sure, call yourself enlightened if you like. I'm gonna stop arguing about this and just enjoy the music,

  • @whiteej21

Also, I'm not american. However, the statement that you made makes clear your irrational stereotypes of others. I wasn't "trolling", I wasn't being offensive. I was simply baffled that she goes from speaking like a normal american women to singing like this. It was an innocent question. Don't be so darn defensive.

  • @whiteej21

I'm not being "captive" to my experience. I'm offended, no... pissed... that this is the first thing you'd assume. The fact is, she's not being herself. She speaks like a "normal" american, and then starts singing like a european child with a speech impediment. To be honest, it's growing on me and I'm starting to enjoy her singing. However, I like singers who are themselves.

Perhaps you shouldn't being so condescending and stop acting like you're some enlightened musical guru.

  • @Mindwanderingguitar

    Continued.

I fully understand the "unique-ness" of it, and that it is an atypical style of singing. But that's not what I was even getting at in the first place. I was just wondering why she essentially "fakes" her singing voice.

Don't act like you're the only open-minded listener. As if you're ahead of the curve or something. I understand the significance of change and evolution in musical styles.

  • Yeah, I just watched an interview with her. She talks like a normal person... so why does she sing with this wierd 4 year old sounding lispy foreign accent speech impediment? It's unique and kind of catchy... but it's just such a wierd voice and so different from her speaking voice.

  • Hmm. I can kind of dig her studio stuff... but the live stuff kinda scares me. First of all, why does she sing like that? Not the 'shriekiness' but the wierd lisp or accent or whatever? Her wiki says she's american but she sounds like a child from some european country with a slight speech impediment. It confuses me. I kinda like her stuff, but her voice baffles me. Don't take this the wrong way, I'm just asking.

  • i like it

  • perfection

  • I like it ;)

  • For those who are turned off to this song by her voice, yall should check out a different version of this song. Her singing is less harsh in other versions

  • @mountainman124

But how many are like this?

Her voice is horrible in this!

  • 3:20 - 3:40 the harp on it's own - sweeeeeeeeeet..

  • @johnnytruant69 I love the harp too, but the singing is so special and different, just awesome..

  • SEEING JOANNA FOR THE FIRST TIME ON THE SAID JOOLS HOLLAND SHOW CAPTIVATED ME IMMEDIATLY I DID NOT WAIT FOR THE MEDIA TO TELL ME IT WAS OK TO DO SO IF YOU HAVE NEVER LISTENED TO THE ALBUM YS IRECOMEND THAT YOU DO ITS GOT THE WOW FACTOR

  • Never get tired of hearing this. One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.

  • I really could like her kind of music if only she didn't sound like she was doing a parody of a retarded person.

  • THIS SHOWS JUST HOW DIVERSE THIS WOMAN REALLY IS CUZ THIS IS SOMETHING THAT U CAN ROLL TO N UR CAR OR EVEN SOMETHING THAT A BAND CUD ROCK OUT TO. • Joanna Newsom is man's next evolution that travelled back in time.

  • Wow

  • her voice is at least 30 years older than her

  • Joanna Newsom is a perfect woman

  • I like this better with the track the roots made

  • ERES LA MEJOR. SALUDOS DESDE MEXICO. MEXICO. MEXICO, MEXICO. MEXICO.

  • What a musician. So talented.

  • Its her voice..and the harp compliments her voice big time :)

  • love this woman!!! she's soooo great!!!

  • Jools is so fat here.

  • Her voice is like that because in the spring of 09, she developed vocal cord nodules and couldn't speak or sing for two months. The recovery changed her voice. It still sounds amazing. Fools.

  • Beautiful.

  • it's sad that people feel the need to "harp" (pun intended) on ms. Newsom. She's only putting her honest self out there and being more productive than most of us who are just sitting here surfin youtube...

  • THE DOGS IN MY STREET ARE HOWLING.... IS SHE THE FULL QUID

  • i love her harp playing and the her voice is unique , it may not be for everyone , but why do people have to be so cruel :( it pissess me off when someone is up front like that bearing there souls and people criticize.

  • @spacenovra boooooo you suck balls

  • Her voice is unusual. Open up your ears and your minds. Not a shinyplasticpopallthe sameaseveryoneinshowbiz voice. Let go of your judgments, folks...

  • Her voice is unusual. Open up your ears and your minds. Not a shinyplasticpopallthe sameaseveryoneinshowbiz voice.

  • She has a harsh voice... Not sure if i can get over it.

  • @Longwittyusername yeah same here, trying to give it a try for a friend but it kinda cuts through you at times :D

  • right. Andy Samberg that lucky fucker!!!!! And I bet you anything he doesn't like her music....

  • I really love Joanna Newsom and every all her albums. But she seems a little nervous here and loses tempo a couple times. Anyone else notice, or am I just a gay cunt?

  • 3:30 - 3:40

    Amazing hemiola.

Well, if that's what it was.

    A 4 triplet phrase.

    Odd.

  • Karate?? I Kill my dinner with an 9 mm Walther :D

  • Karate??

  • thank God for Joanna Newsom

  • Gmancrap is a cunt. Enter into his world and you will see what it feels like to be the last kid in your class with pubic hair and even when they finally appeared, they were ginger. There is probably a name for people like him in Berlin, something along the lines of 'Uber Twat'. Sleep well

  • she reminds me of a fairy :D sitting on top of a mushroom playn her harp and singing

  • If I ever have a daughter, I'm buying her a harp.

  • @the1musiclad I have two sons, they might be getting harps too!

  • @the1musiclad what's wrong with having a son that plays harp

  • @m0410450 my mother has a son that plays the harp :)

  • @TikTakSambo nice

  • @m0410450 i'd pretty much like a boy playing a harp. if i have a son, i'm gonna buy him a harp and a piano.

  • @the1musiclad My 7 year old daughter wants harp lessons, and being a fan of JN who am I to dissuade her?

  • @the1musiclad

    Harp, really expansive :)

  • i wonder why she chooses to sing with an accent. she doesn't speak with one. shes awesomely different

  • She is beautiful. Her voice is beautiful. She has actual talent. Raw and beautiful.

  • Her voice is beautiful. She has actual talent. Raw and beautiful.

  • Absolutely Beautiful. She's like someone plucked from a story of the ancients. A siren.

  • A brilliant musician. Not difficult to see why some people can't understand it given one of the world's most popular noise makers today is Lady goo goo.

  • She's like a fairy ^.^

  • all of you grow up and get to the next level of humanity.. just listen and enjoy ... she -plays from the heart .. so whats the problem... please say something you empty vessels of flesh and bones ........ go on .... be what you are ... empty

  • You either love her, or hate her.

So if you love her, good for you, you have taste.

And if you don't, please go listen to something else, there's no need to unsult something just because you don't like it.

  • You can tell Joanna and her Harp is like being in another world.

As soon as she sit's down i think from her point of view it's so enjoyable and complete escapism for her.

  • You mean a pretentious hipster making up a story as she goes on.

  • @Gmancrap Mate i bet your a hipster yourself. My comment goes deeper than just Joanna btw it can relate to skateboarding, math equations and it just so happens to be that Joanna's skill is her Harp.

Even using the word hipster shows your complete lack of understanding of anything.

I bet you live in NYC or East Berlin

  • Easy Berlin? And What on earth are you going on about? She's not deep, just bad at singing. But I suppose to you hipsters that is deep.

  • @Gmancrap we get it she sings weird. kindly move on to the next video, please.

  • @Gmancrap Let's see you do better. And by that, I mean learn to play a giant ass harp and become famous.

  • What a badass!!

  • I absolutely love her voice, i dont know what you guys are going on about

  • she's just awesome

  • she's just awesome

  • Katastrophe

  • @shawnguy67 it looks like you don't know how to write a message to another youtube user. Also, if you can count the majority of comments are positive. Majority means "most" btw

  • @shawnguy67 something of which your small mind could not possibly comprehend.

  • Much respect to Joanna for this original masterpiece and much respect to the Roots for their remake.

  • I wonder how she can play so accurately while singing! its is a piece of artwork.

ps. obviously some people forget what their mums tell them "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all" if you not going to say anything nice, at least give some constructive criticism...

  • oh yeah!! she is creative. unique!! she is an artist!!! she sings weird but I love it :D

  • amazing harp player

  • oh my god this song gave me chills and this is the fourth time i've listened to it. just so unique and soulful. couldn't have a better voice for her purpose (making beautifully ambient songs like this) 11 out of 10!!!!!

  • She sounds like Adam Sandler on helium

  • She is good at harp though.

  • @trezonz

Is that what it sounds like? Really?

  • @Romans10Verse9 Yes that is really what it sounds like. I torture cats for a living and i definatley see a similarity betweenher voice and cats being strangled. Besides I don't come here to randomly lie about what I think to people I don't know you annoying sarcastic faggot. It's my opinion and if you disagree then I honestly could not care any less. Honest I care more about a single hair falling off 1 in 1.3billion people in china, as it goes by unoticed slowly falling to the floor.
