I only spent six hours or so with her at a magazine shoot I was working on. At that time, (10 years ago) she spoke plainly, with an "American" accent, not the with the polished (British) vowels I hear now.
the accent is definately fake. Over the years she's had a number of different accents and it seems like she's basically settled on this half british. But it's HILARIOUS when you compare it to her very first accent, when she was in her 20s.
Being half British-American, all I can hear is an intelligent, articulate woman. The amount of topics "Judgments of others, Helping others, Out of darkness comes light, Hope and AIDS..." All in under 6 minutes are truly inspirational. Who cares what accent she is using? It´s about what she is saying.

Fair enough :) Although in 10 years you can learn a lot, including several other languages, religions etc Maybe this is an option for her on camera. The people I know who have worked with say she is extremely articulate, even inside private music recording studios. I still stick to "What" she is saying is more important... We are already off track with her message she is trying to put across...

It's true, she's professional here, as opposed to those interviews where she barely makes eye contact, is guarded and testy. I only spent six hours or so with her at a magazine shoot I was working on. At that time, (10 years ago) she spoke plainly, with an "American" accent, not the with the polished (British) vowels I hear now.

the accent is definately fake. Over the years she's had a number of different accents and it seems like she's basically settled on this half british. But it's HILARIOUS when you compare it to her very first accent, when she was in her 20s.

There's no way her accent is purposeful. It's not always there. It comes and goes. I will grant you she uses it when she's being forced to explain herself and feels intimidated. I think she, as anyone would be, feels a bit cornered, knowing so many people hate her to the point where they will flay her for one wrong word. Or, in your case, one "wrong" accent.

Well, she's lived in London for upwards of 10 years, has a British husband and children who also have accents. When I was in London for a WEEK I felt the urge to semi-mimic some of the words. I think pointing out her accent in a disparaging way, as if it's "affected" is silly. If that's the worst that can be said of her, then, "Cheers!"

I also think it's strange that she remarked that the midwest didn't "really have any culture there" While I agree that rural america has a limited scope in the arts and big city diversity, to say it lacks 'culture' is a rather poor word choice that seems to reflect a certain amt. of distain that's unfortunate.
