This event was just a local church event in Paradise California. I was asked on very short notice if I could come video the event. It turned out to be a great concert, put on by Shawn. I can not tell you the type of guitar but it was beautiful.

I keep re-playing this vid to myself. I find it so uplifting, so encouraging. There is an intimacy in his lyric and his general performance that aides a closeness with the Lord. Lately I've been learning that when we worship God, it brings Him pleasure, as that's one of the main reasons behind His creation of us. As a muso myself I'm constantly trying to bring it back to God, the Maker of all things, as it's so easy to get caught up in "does my voice sound nice?". Shawn McDonald seems to get it.

I have read the bible more than most Christians, here are the verses that you say don't exist:
Matthew 22:37 "Love the lord with all your heard soul and mind."
Matthew 10:28 "Fear him who can send soul and body to hell."
John 4:18 "there is no Fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear."
These verses are literal contradiction, not figurative or spiritual. It's an error in God's word. Clearly if there is no fear in love, then Got wouldn't tell us to Fear him.
Are all forms of fear necessarily bad, evil, or sinful? Can't you fear things for good and necessary reasons? Can't someone who is worthy to be feared simultaneously be worthy of love and devotion without having a contradiction in their nature? What about a virtuous yet powerful monarch?
I want to understand, because your claim of contradiction feels a little bit simplistic and does not allow for multiple implications to these terms, which we all clearly use every day.

Well, maeon, there is also the error of over simplifying something that is naturally complex. There are many instances of commands to both love and fear God within the same book, in both OT and NT.
Also, remember that John is writing a uniquely spiritual book, pointing to spiritual truths. Remember that he says, "BUT, perfect love casts out fear." What is the difference between perfect love and our love. Will we fear God when we are perfected in heaven? I doubt it. But should we now?
I agree that John was really making a best attempt at describing the supernatural and occult. I think the contradiction persists. If Perfect love casts out fear as God said. Then it seems to me illogical that God would instruct us to fear him.
There are a few ways to escape this problem:
A. God made an error in telling us to fear him.
B. God does not love us with perfect love.

Do you realize how similar the NT is to our oldest sources? Do you realize how little the NT cannon was actually disputed during the 300 years before the Nicene council? But have you considered this: the Bibles we read have been translated from a different language, words with more than one meaning in the original Hebrew or Greek might have been translated into a single word in English. For instance, I've been told that the Greek or Hebrew word that we translate as "day" when it's used in the Genesis story of creation could actually mean year, era, or other durations of time.

FEAR & LOVE are two contradicts nature of our God. Both applicable at the same time.

I feel i need to further explain. 1 John 4:18reads, "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment." You forgot that last part. With God in us, with Christ as our Savior who takes all our sin, there is no fear of punishment of eternal damnation. Christ has taken that.

Proverbs 8:13 "To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech."
There are different types of fear. Matt 10:28 begins, "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul." What this says to me is that why should we fear (give power to control that emotion) to those who cannot condemn our soul but we are to open our eyes to the one who truly has that power and hate the evil that tries to lie and say that it has the power. I hope this makes sense Maeon3 and clears things up a bit. I would suggest reading more of Proverbs 8 and 1 John 4.

I keep re-playing this vid to myself. I find it so uplifting, so encouraging. There is an intimacy in his lyric and his general performance that aides a closeness with the Lord. Lately I've been learning that when we worship God, it brings Him pleasure, as that's one of the main reasons behind His creation of us. As a muso myself I'm constantly trying to bring it back to God, the Maker of all things, as it's so easy to get caught up in "does my voice sound nice?". Shawn McDonald seems to get it.

lol i am a Christian, and i'd have to say yes, there is a lot of truth in what you're saying, it's simple psychology. there is one thing that i'd like to say though. what Christianity is really about is that people don't deserve to go to heaven. i mean really, what rights do you have that you deserve a spot in heaven? Taking God out of the world will not bring peace. What defines right or wrong in a godless world? What is profitable? What accomplishes "self actualization"(what makes you happy)? In the end the rule will be: Might makes right. Whether that is the person with the biggest stick, the country with the most capable military, or 51% of the vote. It becomes a quest to seek happiness/well-being for the greatest number of people. The "haves" will overpower the "have-nots." There will be no peace.

When I was asked and had the opportunity to film this day with Shawn, it was the first time I met Shawn McDonald. I was taken back as to the talent I was filming. God gave Shawn a way to help people feel the Love of God through his music. I know it did me.

I have read the bible more than most Christians, here are the verses that you say don't exist:
Matthew 22:37 "Love the lord with all your heard soul and mind."
Matthew 10:28 "Fear him who can send soul and body to hell."
John 4:18 "there is no Fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear."
These verses are literal contradiction, not figurative or spiritual. It's an error in God's word. Clearly if there is no fear in love, then Got wouldn't tell us to Fear him.
The Bible is not consistent.

Are all forms of fear necessarily bad, evil, or sinful? Can't you fear things for good and necessary reasons? Can't someone who is worthy to be feared simultaneously be worthy of love and devotion without having a contradiction in their nature? What about a virtuous yet powerful monarch?
I want to understand, because your claim of contradiction feels a little bit simplistic and does not allow for multiple implications to these terms, which we all clearly use every day.

Brianjwalton, I understand how you want the Bible to contain God's word, but your trying to cover over a blatant contradiction by adding unnecessary complexity. Lets just read the Bible for what it says:
Exhibit A: Bible says LOVE GOD
Exhibit B: Bible says FEAR GOD
Exhibit C: Bible says NO FEAR IN LOVE
I see your trying to complixify the definition of fear.
Read the bible and ask yourself: "IS this God's word?" instead of reading the Bible and automatically assuming.

Well, maeon, there is also the error of over simplifying something that is naturally complex. There are many instances of commands to both love and fear God within the same book, in both OT and NT.
Also, remember that John is writing a uniquely spiritual book, pointing to spiritual truths. Remember that he says, "BUT, perfect love casts out fear." What is the difference between perfect love and our love. Will we fear God when we are perfected in heaven? I doubt it. But should we now?

I agree that John was really making a best attempt at describing the supernatural and occult. I think the contradiction persists. If Perfect love casts out fear as God said. Then it seems to me illogical that God would instruct us to fear him.
There are a few ways to escape this problem:
A. God made an error in telling us to fear him.
B. God does not love us with perfect love.
Of course, Item C is my choice:
C. The bible is a book of evolving legend, and is neither God's word nor good.

Well, since C is your underlying premise and is clearly coloring your conclusions, I clearly can't convince you of my interpretation without addressing this.
Do you realize how similar the NT is to our oldest sources? Do you realize how little the NT cannon was actually disputed during the 300 years before the Nicene council? Only 4 or 5 books were commonly in dispute the Gnostic gospels were never disputed. This does not suggest an evolving gospel. myths? Surely not Bacchus.

My notion of "religious evolution" spans over the last 8 thousand years, not the last 3 thousand like your religion does.
There are thousands of once world-dominating religious institutions and systems that have risen and fallen in the last 8 thousand years. Your religion is just one of the thousands.
Your arguing about the tiniest little segment of theology and then saying "well, it didn't change right THEN" so therefore it never changed.
Religion is only useful for controlling people.

But staking an entire claim against a belief system upon one seeming contradiction is not a firm foundation. 1. The experts of dating things are the Geologists and Scientists, not the Muslims, Mormons, Quakers, Catholics OR Jews. The experts of getting scientific truths right are not the Christians. I trust the Geologists and they put the age of the earth to the order of billions, not thousands.
2. I have considered the arguments for all sides, and I decided for myself that the idea of Old Earth makes much more sense than young Earth. The bible failed at convincing me.

You're totally right! The geologists and scientists are experts at dating things. But have you considered this: the Bibles we read have been translated from a different language, words with more than one meaning in the original Hebrew or Greek might have been translated into a single word in English. For instance, I've been told that the Greek or Hebrew word that we translate as "day" when it's used in the Genesis story of creation could actually mean year, era, or other durations of time.

What it DOES suggest is a group of men with strong resolve struggling to mantain consistency despite a plurality of voices--research Paul's constant preaching against schisms.
And when it comes to the OT, an evolving cannon is nearly laughable. Their religious fervor led them to quite the opposite, risking everything to mantain its accuracy.
And what of those Greek myths again? Neoplatonism? Arianism? Monism? Again, these were all fervently denied by the church fathers, and not incorporated

FEAR: we have to fear Him because He is God. Fear in here is in the context of RESPECT and HONOR. We are His people, He is our King.
LOVE: He is the loving Father who gave His only son Jesus Christ on the cross to wipe away our sins. Imperfect us because of our sinful nature is justified by the cross.
FEAR & LOVE are two contradicts nature of our God. Both applicable at the same time.

I feel i need to further explain. 1 John 4:18reads, "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment." You forgot that last part. With God in us, with Christ as our Savior who takes all our sin, there is no fear of punishment of eternal damnation. Christ has taken that.
Matthew 10:28 "Fear him who can send soul and body to hell."
Proverbs 8:13 "To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech."

There are different types of fear. Matt 10:28 begins, "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul." What this says to me is that why should we fear (give power to control that emotion) to those who cannot condemn our soul but we are to open our eyes to the one who truly has that power and hate the evil that tries to lie and say that it has the power. I hope this makes sense Maeon3 and clears things up a bit. I would suggest reading more of Proverbs 8 and 1 John 4.

There was never an original bible, It's an conglomerate of many religious texts merged into one. Paganism, Greek mythology, Judaism, Bablyonian creation stories, Jewish fables all mixed with some accurate history.
You want to know what Jesus really said? Don't research the bible itself, research outside the bible and ask where the origins of each individual book came from. Genesis: Jewish fables, Revelation: Bablyonaian creation myths, Apocrapha? Matthew,Mark,Luke,John? Who wrote them?
