What happend to Capt. Charles B. McVay III was a true crime. You think that Congress exonering him after all these years will change all this? IT'S TOO LATE! Congress and families drove him to his death and his blood is on their hands! Rest in peac Capt. McVay, your bravery will not be forgotten nor the injustice that our "great nation" has done to you.
Rear Admiral Charles Butler McVay III (July 30, 1898 - November 6, 1968)
I am seriously shocked that anyone would dislike this! My grandpa is 89 years old and a current survior of the sinking of the USS Indinapolis. The movie does a good job telling the story but it is nothing compared to hearing it first hand form many survivors!
@katie8809 I think most of the negative votes are people voting that they did not like what happened not that they hate the story, or the people involved. Your grandpa was a hero. The bomb saved far more lives, Japanese and american, than most people understand. If america had to invade Japan the Japanese would have fought to the death as was their thinking at the time. USA would have been forced to kill over 75% of the population instead of the relatively few killed by the bomb
@katie8809 Pardon my asking, but did the Indianapolis have life boats? I would assume they were standard issue, but the reports I've read never mention any. Maybe your grandpa knows...
@IsomP0P From what my grandpa has described they are more-less inflatable rafts. The sounded like they were big round rafts with and air tube around the outside that the men were forced to hang on around the outside, along with their life jackets.
no , but at least his family could have the facts set straight and he dishonorable discharge overturned and the honors that he deserved thank you for uploading this 9 of my uncles served during the war , i heard many horror stories growing up , i know it had to be , but humans are the only species that excel in killing each other
@annettealex1 Yeah, your right i forgot to mention that. Not only did they blame the Captain but they had the Japanese Sub Commander that sunk the ship testify against the Captain at his trial. I would have went insane....oh that made me think if i remember correctly the Captain DID commit suicide behind the trail.
@upupsteru i forgot to mention to you that in the movie jaws was the first time it was made public about what had happen with inndain, survivors who saw it said that they were glad that their story was finally told, even in this way, there had been a black out by the us navy because they had been the ship that delivered the bomb,
@annettealex1 Thanks for sharing. I remember the first time i heard of it was in jaws and i remember it was a scary and chilling story to hear. I had no idea it was a true story till years later.
@upupsteru Why did he commit suicide? I always thought he committed suicide because he had the chance to sink the boat while the atomic bomb (or parts of it) was onboard.
He was blamed for the loss of his ship because he didn't follow procedure by zigzagging his way back to base. He went in a straight line. The Navy put him on trial and he lost. At the trial they asked the Japanese capt if zigzagging would have made a difference and he said no, we would have still sunk the ship. But the navy still blamed the capt for the loss of his ship and all his men. He must have got lots of hate mail and he fell into depression. after he killed himself the navy cleared him
@upupsteru OHHH! We're on the wrong page. Somehow, I thought Mochitsura Hashimoto committed suicide and not the American captain. Makes a little more sense now.
At first I thought this was going to be another dip-shit edit considering all the rest on YT but this edit was appropriate to Quint's story! It actually made me feel sadder for these guys! I’m speculating but you can’t help but wonder if not only were their sailors helping each other but could some may have been fighting each other as well! They must have experienced not only survival, courage and fear but maybe also witnessed the horror of harsh humanity to each other! Hardcore story! =(
you are right shark attacks continues during the rescue, dead bodies were floating all over the place, but the sharks preferred people who were alive, and live peoples skin would fall off to the bone when they were pulled out of the water. don't forget the smell of death and the screams of the dieing and the complete darkness of night filled only with distant screams, Im sure some have seen some things that are to inhumane to talk about google Indianapolis survivor here it from the real people.
"This has got to be one of the most bone chilling talks on the planet. Those sailors and marines were in the Pacific Ocean for 5 days with nothing in the promise of their future but, death. God bless the crew (survivng and deceased) of CA-35!"
noone gives a crap when you are in the middle of the ocean surrounded by sharks... your ideals go right out of the window... survival goes into play. Some people don't rly give a damn about anything else when they are faced with certain death, all they care about is to survive and to end the fear.
The Indianapolis didnt sink by the stern. Unrealistic movie is unrealistic.
