  • never been much of a fan of the b.c. but huge props to them for their obvious love and respect for the band.

  • There are many reasons to gratuitously stroke the Crowes. But their knowledge and appreciation of music history is as good as any. They are absolutely incredible at blowing away audiences when they play borderline deep cuts and sometimes complete deep cuts. They are the last fucking Rock n Roll band around. That means an awful lot to people who actually like real Rock n Roll. They never have compromised. I am much older now than when I first heard them. They continue to deeply inspire me.

  • Soundman wuz asleep at the switch..

  • Wow Tomthefunky.......checked into some anger management yet? Do you know Chris and Rich? That is a pretty shitty accusation if you don't actually know them personally. I don't care what they are like myself; I can only control who I AM ! Thus, I just love the music. That's all its about dude; just enjoy the rock and roll and have a beer man. Chill out......its ok......you are right.....we all know..... :) LOSER.

  • Nice version of this song. I saw them live in 2000 opening for Neil Young. They play good R'n'R and....that's enough.

  • oh shit this must have been at saturday in the park

  • poor

  • Believe it or not:

    The crowes are a "nr.one cover-band",too

I have had the very fine pleasure to see and hear

    the crowes for two times.

    The crowes are outstanding

    I'm a fan

  • kiss kiss rr

  • The Crowes are the best band to come along in the last 25 years. At least they know who the Band is, and pay homage. I don't hear Coldplay or U2 keeping this music alive. I do like the cover of "The night they drove" better than this one. Robbie and Levon were special, and for the sheer fact the Robinson Brothers have been around for 20 years(escp. in todays scene) makes them special. Love the Band for mentioning my hometown of Lake Charles, La. (Cripple Creek).

  • @BulletsandBibles only robbie and levon were special? not danko? not manuel? not to mention this was the band paying homage to marvin gaye, who wrote this song.

  • @blueballsredhair: One issue with this statement- this is originally a Marvin Gaye song (actually written by the legendary Motown team of Holland-Dozier-Holland). That is true. But the way they are playing this song is much closer to the way that The Band played it. Search for "Don't Do It Last Waltz" for an example.

A band who covered this song more like the Motown original was The Who.

  • @BulletsandBibles why pay homage to the the Band for DontDoIt?? DontDoIt was written at Motown by the Holland brothers and 1st recorded by MarvinGaye. BlackCrowes arent covering a Band song. This is really Marvins` song.

  • @PAULOcbi well if you are going to nitpick, it isn't really Marvin's either. Like most of Motown, it was dudes writing for singers. The arrangement is clearly more similar to the Band's, even their dropping of "Baby" from the title. Dunno why you got to harsh on folks only to be half right.

  • @duanejimiandjerry did you even read my comment ???,I said DontDo It was written at Motown by the the Holland brothers and 1st recorded by Marvin Gaye ,so nice try but Im %100 right. Now run along and bug sumone else.

  • @PAULOcbi whatever dude, they are covering The Band's arrangement. If they covered the Gaye style it wouldn't rock nearly as hard and the would have a "Baby" in the front, which they don't. Just try to enjoy the music instead of constantly trying to harsh on others.

  • ever heard Jimmy page @ the black Crowes live at the greek?.........yeah listen to it and shut the hell up

  • Artistic musicians often come across a little scattered. Ever listen to Springsteen do an interview? What about Keith? With the Crowes, the sum of its parts it greater. Steve Gorman is a monster of a drummer, and Rich knows tone. Chris is a cross between a young Rod Stewart and Gram Parsons(not a bad thing). I love the Crowes for flying their flag in the face of the crap they call music now days. Bought "Shake" when I was 12, and been a die hard fan since.

  • tomthefunky

I like how you felt it necessary to place open G tuning between parentheses. Too funny! As equally silly is your basing your critique of Chris on his political comments or RIch on how you perceive his attitude. How fucking inept are YOU? Why not comment on their WRITING and PLAYING?? Ever see them live?? If so, WHERE & WHEN?? You're the dude who buys a bottle of wine based on the appearance of the label. Right, dipshit? So yeah, I'm quite sure I COULD find a bigger idiot...YOU.

  • My comment has been deleted so I can't recall what I originally wrote but if you want me to comment on their writing and playing I will. I think Chris is a Steve Marriott wannabe and Rich has zero originality. I think combined they are a couple of jerkoffs that are too carried away with themselves. It appears by your seething anger that you have a serious mancrush on them and I highly doubt you are forty-two. You remind me of a thirteen year old defending her favorite boy band.

  • tomthefunky

You can see your original comment by hitting "show more comments."

    Here's what I think...

    1) You're not particulary familiar with their catalogue of work.

    2) You've never seen them live.

As for "seething anger," not quite. It's more pity. Since seeing my first concert, the Stones in '78, I've seen nearly every band that I've ever listened to. Personally, NOTHING can compare to seeing SRV live. However, I've seen the Crowes over 30 times, and they are a close second.

  • tomthefunky

As for the remainder of your silliness, I've never experienced a 13 year old defending her favorite boy band. I generally don't associate with 13 year old girls. Nor do I listen to boybands. So, I suppose I'll simply have to accept that comment at its face-value on your part. Hey, good luck with that.

  • I saw them at the Orange County Fairgrounds in upstate New York opening for Aerosmith around 90-91,they were a brand new band. I remember thinking they pretty much covered every cliche in the book but I never hated their music, I hate them personally. They are world class assholes and you know damn well I'm not the only one that thinks so. Right? I know and you know they are dickheads so please stop this silly nonsense and move on. Just let it go, man, let it go. You're too old for this.

  • tomthefunky

That's too bad, whatever has left you with that impression of them personally. I've met the band on several occasions. Yeah, Rich can be on the surly side. And Chris's silly political rants are very well documented. But those type of things aren't what I pay attention to. I'm more interested in a band's writing, mastery of their instruments, and intensity of live performances. When the Black Crowes are hitting their stride, there are few bands, past or present, that can touch them.

  • tomthefunky

Oh, and just so you know... Ry Cooder taught Keith how to tune and play in "open G tuning." LOL. Clown.

  • i'm a life-long Band fan and this is a decent version. the crowes can't be at fault because they don't have levon on vocals.

  • here's what happened... Being a crowes fan, but also a Who fan, i thought i'd search for versions of this song since the Who used to play it regurarly.

After that i came across the Band's version, which i became in love with, but i never knew the Crowes covered it as well...

Needless to say that i smiled when i saw this version (with the great MFF)

    Funny how things can go...

  • No time...

  • as a fan of The Band I love seeing the Crowes pay tribute. A damn fine job I'd say! Wish I was there.

  • I can appreciate what you guys are saying, but I think this a rockin' version... It's pointless to compare or even attempt to exactly imitate the Band, because no one is going to do it the same as them...They were one of a kind....

And as far as Chris's guitar tone, I think it is right on time... Actually is very similar to Robbie Robertson's tone in the Last Waltz...Not to mention Chris Robinson is know for having some of the best "tone" in rock guitar. But whatever you "professionals"...

  • Chris isn't playing guitar here, that would be Rich. Chris does play guitar the the band occasionally, but I believe you were trying to refer to Rich. And yes, his tone is very distinctive...

  • Yes I was... Mixed the names up...

  • I appreciate the Black Crowes trying to revive good music and keep being a "band" honest and natural. But this version of "Don't Do It" pales in comparison to The Band's cover. That guitarists guitar is far too distorted, and one of the first rules of playing electric guitar is don't strum when you have too much gain and distortion on, you get an avalanche of crunch and drive people my parent's age insane.

  • I was at this show! awesome!

  • Marc Ford sings better than Chris and plays better than Rich. No wonder they threw him out. Again! You're better off without 'em Marc.

  • Marc Ford just kicks ass! Love this Band cover, they rock the shit out of this song!

  • The Band version you're thinking of is just a cover of the original Marvin Gaye "Baby Don't You Do It"...

  • Correct. Marvin did the original. This is essentially just the Band's version albeit not as good. IMO.

  • agreed. Although it's a Gaye cover, the arrangement is all Band. And these guys don't compare to the Band..although glad to see they're fans.

  • That may be true whovertonjr, but the arrangement of this song is the Band's arrangement. Gaye's version is much more motwon.

I don't love this version the Black Crowes are doing, the reason I like Don't Do It is the combination of each member of the Band playing their instruments the best they ever played em. This seems contrived and like a one man show. Nonetheless I do like The Black Crowes admiration of the Band.

  • Can't see how this is a one man show? 3 different vocalists taking the verses...? Maybe a 3 man show. This is just a live cover remember, I saw them play this as an encore and as a huge Band fan, it was great to him them do this and turn a whole bunch of people on to The Band who probably never heard of them. Not at all contrived..just ask Levon, they're recording their new album at his studio next month..Levon is a fan. Peace..

  • Rich doin' his best vocal work. Loved the version by the Band, but whatever the Crowes do you know is just gonna rock. Thanks.

  • That's not Rich!

  • Oops. Thought you were talking about Marc.

  • Man, I miss Marc.

  • Agree. The Black Crows are THE last of the great rock and roll bands. I hope someone else can help carry the torch but it does not look good. Thank you BC. I love you guys. Peace.

  • Best band to see live. Period. And hell, best band period.

  • i love when rich sings..hes got skills!

  • Not Rich!

  • is so rich

  • I'm sorry I thought you were talking about Marc's singing near the end. You're right, I was wrong.

  • I was at this show, the beach ball was annoyin as fuck, but the music was great! Robert Randolph performed too and kicked ass.
